STEEL-DERRICK REENFORCEMENT.

Be it known that I, TROY A. L. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa, State of Oklahome, have invented anew and useful Steel- Derrick Reenforcement; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to reenforcing means for the corner uprights of steel derricks of the type used for drilling oil and gas wells, and wherein said uprights are formed from angle iron, and has forits object to provide means whereby elongated bars rectangular- 1y shaped in transversecross section may be easily and quickly attached to the uprights for bracing the same, and materially increasing the strength of the derrick as a whole.
A further object is to provide right angularly shaped plates adapted to receive the inner corner of the reenforcing wooden bar and the angle iron upright, and bolts right angularly disposed in relation to each other and connecting the flanges of the right angularly shaped plates.
A further object is to provide the flanges of one of said right angularly shaped plates with apertures for the receptlon of the bolts, and the apertures with enlarged portions through which the bolt heads or nuts may be easily passed, thereby allowing the device to be easily and quickly applied or removed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the in- .vention.

It has been found that the corner uprights 2 bend andbreak under ex cessive loads, andto obviate'this difiiculty the brace is primarily designed. The corner uprights 2 are braced by means of rectangularly shaped Wooden bars 4. Each bar 4 has its corner 5 disposed between the flanges 6 of the upright 2 and is held in close and binding engagement with the upright by means of oppositely disposed angular plates 7 and 8. Angular plate 7 engages the outer side of the upright 2 and is provided with angularly disposed outwardly extending flanges 8 through the apertures 9 of which a the clamping bolts 10 extend. .It Will be noted that the bolts 10 are in parallel relation tothe adjacent outer'sides of the bar 4, and are at a right angle to each other. The angularly shaped plate 8 is secured to the inner side of the brace bar4 by means of a screw 11, and has its flanges provided with extensions 8 extending beyond the corners12 of the bar and through its portions 8' the bolts 10 extend. The portions 8* of the angularly shaped plate 8 are provided with right angularly shaped apertures 13, and when in position extend through the restricted portion 13", and are provided with nuts 14, whereby'the angularly shaped plates 7 and 8 may be securely drawn towards each other for forcing the wooden bar 4 into close binding engagement with the upright 2. However to facilitate the attaching of the bolts 10 to the angular plate 8, the apertures 13 are provided with enlarged portions 13 through which the nuts 14 will easily pass, thereby allowing the plates to be easily attached or detached from eachother without removing the nuts 14 entirely from the bolts, consequently the brace members may be easily and quickly attached to the derrick upright, for thoroughly bracing the same.
From the above it will be seen that a derrick bracing means is provided, which is.
simple in construction, the parts reduced to a minimum, and one wherein the device may be easily and quickly applied to a derrick.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a corner upright of a derrick formed from angle iron, of reenforcing means therefor, said means comprising a rectangular shaped bar, said bar having one of its cornersdisposed Within the angleiron, right angularly shaped plates carried by the angle iron and the bar andoppositely disposed,.and right angularly disposed bolts connecting the plates together.
2. The combination with a corner upright of a derrick formed from angle iron, of reenforcing means for said angle iron, said means comprising a rectangularly shaped bar, one corner of saidbar being disposed within the angle iron, right angularly shaped plates carried by the outer sides of the angle iron and bar, right angularly disposed outwardly extending flang'es carried by the 15 plate engaging theangle iron, means for sethe reduced portions of the apertures in the innerplate.
