a citizen of the United States, residing in borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cipher Cutout- Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing accounting machines and has for its object to provide zero cut-out mechanisms for preventing the printing of zeros before the numerical digit of the highest decimal order of a number.
My invention is shown applied to an accounting machine having registering and printing elements comprising type segments. Such a. machine is fully described in my copending application, Serial No. 158,142, filed March 28, 1917 and, therefore, only the parts of such machine are described as are necessary for an understanding of the new invention.
The new zero cut-out comprises zero supports pivoted to each of the type segments and each provided with a cam-engaged ad justablc roller-carrying bracket which is instrumental in moving the zero support to printing position as will be explained.
Another object is to provide adjustable means for printing decimals or the like between the characters.
These and other objects will appear when the invention proceeds; and whiie herein I have described minute details of the inven tion the invention is not limited to these, since the details of construction and combination may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

In the said copending application means are shown for feeding perforated cards to an analyzer comprising a reciprocating pin box provided with pins adapted to feel the cards and on finding perforations therein to press therethrough to raise registering stops corresponding to perforations corresponding to numerals, the naught stops being normally raised and adapted by suitable connections to be depressed by the raising oi a numeral registering stop.
Referring more particularly to the drawf ing of the present specification, there are stops 10, (Fig. l), of the kind just mentioned. These are arranged in rows and associated with each row is a naught stop 11 and a reciprocating rack bar 12 provided with a shoulder 14: adapted to engage the rear face of one of said stops 10 or 11 as the rack bar is brought forward by means of the transverse bar 15 which is reciprocated by suitable means as shown in s'aid copending application.

Should it be desired to breast the operative connection between any zero support and the element of the next higher order, the roller carrying bracket 46 of such zero-support will he moved until its recess 49 to ceives the zero type 50, in which case the roller 5% and the pin 51 thereof will he disposed entirely out of the paths of the earn 55 and the lug 52 of the segment of the next higher order, as shown Figs. 4 and 4?, thus, as it were, dividing the printing element into zones, in which case two items such as in the last three rows of Fig. ll could-be printed,
In View of the above, it is obvious that any numeral positioned type segment of any zone, will cause the drawing; down, to zero printing position, of all of the zero type supports of all of the successively adjacent zero positioned type segments of that same zone; and that no numeral positioned type segment will effect the drawing down of a zero ty e su. )ort of a hi 'lier order.
If it be desired to print a decimal or other mark 58 of separation between adjacent columns or the printed sheet 57, this is done by means of the printing points 59, 10). of the decimal or separating plate 30, which plate may be secured to segment- 38 by screws 61, (Fig. 3). these plates may be placed wherever thought desirable, or omitted entirely.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a plurality of numeral type carriers; and a zero type carrying support associated with each car rier and. adaptedto be caused to assume a normal or abnormal condition. and adapted, when in said normal condition, to be influenced by an adjacent carrier to assume an operative condition, and when in said abnormal position to be free from such influence.

In a machine of the character described, the combination o'l a plurality oi type carrie a series ot numeral type on each carrie means for positioning the carriers; a cam :arried on each carrier: a zero type 1 carrying support pivotnliy printing position when said higher order support is in printing position: and a roller I on each roller-carryiug-bracket. said roller being, when the bracket is in said abnormal relation, outside of the path of the cam of the carrier of the next higher order, and adapted when in said normal relation. to be engaged by the cam oi the next higher order to move to zero printing position its associated support.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a plurality of type carriers; a series of numeral type on each carrier; means for positioning the carriers; a zero type -arrying support pivotally mounted on each carrier and yieldably held in non-printing position and provided with a lug: a roller-carrying bracket pivotally mounted against each zero type support and provided'with means for holding the bracket in normal or abnormal relation relative to said support, each. bracket being provided with a pin adapted to be engaged by the lug of the; support of the next higher order to hold such bracket and the associated support in printing position when said higher order support is in printing position; a roller on each rollercarrying-bracket; and a cam carrier on each type carrier and adapted. when such type segment is moved beyond zero position to engage the roller of the normally positioned bracket of the next lower order and move to zero printing position the support associated with such lower order bracket.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a plurality of type segments; a series of nun'ieral type on each segment; means for rotating the seg ments to prinfingly position selected type: a zero type carrying support pivotally mounted on each segment and yieldably held in non-printing position and provided with a lug; a roller-carrying-bracket.pivotally mounted against each support and provided with means for holding the bracket in normal or abnormal relation relative to said support. eaohbraoket being provided with a pin adapted to be en aged by the lug ot the support of the next iigher order to hold such backet and the associated support in Y printing position when said higher order when such type segment is moved beyond zero position to engage the roller of the normally positioned bracket of the nest lower order and move. to zero printing position the support associated with such lower order bracket.

A type bar for accounting machines and the like, comprising a relatively thin type carrier, meansfor supporting the same against printing strains, type of greater thickness than the carrier having a cutaway portion adapted to fit against the face of the carrier and a flat shoulder near the head of the type adapted to bear against the edge of the type carrier to transmit printing strains to the type carrier, and means for holding such shoulder in proper position against such edge. i

A type bar for accounting machines and the like comprising a relatively thin type 'arrieu means for supporting the same against printing strains in spaced relation from other parts of the mechanism, type of greater thickness than such carrier h 'ing a cut-away portion equal in lengtl the etiective width of the carrier. so arranged that a flat shoulder is formed near the head. of the type adapted to press a; mat an edge of the carrier to transmit. printing strains to the carrier. and another shoulder is armed near the back end of the type adapted. to contact with the other edge of the carrier to prevent longitudinal moi emont of the. type in relation to the carrier and thereby to prevent the type from pivoting in relation to the carrier, means for holdingthe type against movement longitudinally of the carrier and means -for holding the cutaway portion of the type against. the face of carrier.
20. A structure as defined in claim 19, in which the means for holding the type against longitudinal movement of the carrier comprises notches formed on one'edge ot' the carrier.
21. A structure as defined in claim 20, in which the notches are. positioned to reeeive the shoulders on the type which are formed near the back of the type.
22. A structure as defined in claim 19 in which the cut-away portions of the type are held against the face of the carrier solely by attaching members which pass through the type and the carriers.
v 23. A structure as defined in claim 19 in which the type carrier is curved so that its edge forms an arc ofa circle.
