ARTHUR J". BAANE QFLQHICAGO ILIJNGIS.
VIBRATOR FOE EBINT-ING PRESSES.
Application filed October 18, 1921.": Seria'YNo. 507,489.
To all iii/tom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J.DAA1\'E, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Chicago, in the county of Cook and State" parts is constructed to y eldably hold the of Llinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Vibrators for Printing Presses. of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact" description,
reference being had to the accompanyingis formed-to produce what in-iglit be termed a stirrup, into which the hooked 1 end-otthe {inking roller frame isarranged. As before drawings, forming a part of thisspeci-iica io The invention relates to ink distributing rollers for printing presses, and primarily.
to a means for removably attaching said roller to the frame of a printing-press without necessitating any change to be made to the press by either the addition to or subt1 action of parts from the press to permit of the association or removal :of the. ink distributing roller.
The invention has as its prime object the provision of a structure capable of performing the above advantages which, is
adapted for association and removal froin' what is generally known as the lOWI"l11l'I-" in roller of a printing press of that type in which tiie inking rollers are-attached to one end oi a swinging "frame which when actuated causes the inking rollers to tra-. verse or travel over the ink platen and the type. This lower inkingi'oller is journaled at its on iosite ends in a iiooked sha- )ed 301- 1 tion of a yieldable member whicn is carried by this swinging frame, and it is an b ect to produce a shaped part.
in. addition to the above it is. a further object to provide a'structure which is cap able of association with this part of the press, and which is also capable of accoinmodating itself to various shaped-surfaces O'i'Sl which the inking rollers ridef during their travel to and from the platen and type, and in addition will insure a close connection between the inking rollers and distributing rollers and compensate for variations The device ioriningthe basis of the apsupport.
construction which is capable ot removable association with this hook plication is designedto be. ai'ranged -at the opposite endsof an ink distributing roller and in its present form consists of two parts hingedly connected together. "One ofthese to thehooked end of-[theswinging inking roller frame. This last inent ionedportion stated, the ink distributing roller is arrang'edto yield to: accommodate itself to connection of the ink distributing roller --and the hooked endofthe inkingroller hen the distributing roller 1S arranged for use, it-is positioned-between the lower inkingroller-and theadjacent rollerflof the upper inking rollers.
The-invention will be explained inconjunction with the accompanying drawings which disclose various-forms-of which the invention is-susceptible, it being understood however, that" the means for accomplishing the invention is not limited to that shown, the scope of the invention being defined by theappended claims forming apartr.here
*for,
f In the-drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of apri-nting press having the invention applied-thereto.
-Figui'e 2 is a side elevation 'ofthe device for removablyattaching the inki'ng roller to the press. v
"Figure 3 isanend -view of the'device shown-in Figure 2.
Figures 4; and 5 amend and front views :of a -modified structure which maybe resorted to. i
The structure illustrated in the drawings for accomplishing the invention consists of amember '10 and ainei'nber 11, which-are '.hi-ng'edlysecured together 'at- 12, it' 'being i p -understood that the opposite ends-orthe distributing roller 13 are, provided with a 'ClGVICB composed of these elements and" as they are substantially"ident cal with each other-an-explanation-of the structure: of one *Will *su'fhce for an; understanding 1 of "both. "These'elementsdtl and 11 maybe eitherstamped from a piece'of sheet metal or cast as desired. .The member may be termed a stirrup and is shaped to readily engage the hooked end 14: of the swinging frame 15 to which the inking rollers 16,
117 and 18 are secured and which in one form of printing press travels over the platen 19and the type, upon the actuation of the swinging frame.
The member 1.0 or stirrup is formed to provide the channel shaped portion 20, which is thusconstructed to receive the'end V 21 of the hook I l. The walls 22 and 28 of the channeled portion engage the inner and outer faces of the hooked end 21 and hold this portion of the stirrup against movement. The material of which the wall 22 is formed extends downwardly and provides the wall at which is substantially parallel to the walls 22 and 23, it being connected to the wall 22 by means of the connecting portions 25. This wall 24:
has an inwardly projecting ledge26 which projects inwardly beyond the portions 2525. This wall and the wall 24Eare provid d to engage the portion 2'? formed by the juncture of the shaft 28 and the hookportion. One of the walls 25 has an arm 29 extending therefrom which is integral therewith, to which the member generally designated 11 is pivotally secured at the pivot 12. This arm acts as a lever and -maintains the walls 26 and 27 and the chan .iel shaped portion 20 in contact with those portions of the hook which they respectively engage when these portions of the device are arranged for cooperation with the hook andthe ink distributing roller is arranged for cooperation with the inking rollers of the press.
The member 11 which is pivotally connected. to the lever 29 is formed to produce til) the portion 30 and the right. angled portion 31. The portion 30 is provided with a slottedaperture 32 provided for the reception of the end of the shaft 38 upon which the ink'distributing roller 13 is arranged for reciprocation. This slot permits the shaft 33 to reciprocate with relation to the bracket 11 so as to allow the ink distributing roller to accommodate itself to the vari,
ously shaped surfaces over which it travels with the inking rollers toand from the platen of the press and the type, and also "removed from cooperation with the press.
The structure may be provided with a tensionin device to var the oressure b 1 exerted by the ink distributing roller. To
accomolish this the housing 34* will be provided with screw threads 38 which are in threaded engagement with the port1on'31 of the bracket, and thus by rotating the housing by means of the knurled head 39 the tension of the coiled spring within the housing will be varied. A set nut 40 may be utilized to hold the housing in its adjusted position. 7
f desired the stirrup portion 10 may be provided with an inwardly projecting pin or extension 41 which engages the wall 42 of the hook and assists to hold the stirrup with relation to the hook. To apply the device to the inking rollers of the press and.
the hook 14 the ink distributing roller. 13 is placed in position relatively to the inking rollers of the press and the stirrup portion generally designated 10 is, passed over the uppermost end of the hook. The member 11 is then depressed which brings the channeled portion 20 below the part 21 of the hook. ,Upon the release 'ofthe pressure upon the member ll'the spring in the housing 3 is permitted to act which imparts an upward movement to the arm or lever 29, bringing the portions 24- and 26 into contact with the part 27 formed by the juncture of the shaft 28 and the hook; To remove the device a downward pressure will again be applied to the member 11. This will allow the portion 10 to drop away from the hook so that it will clear it and allow the entire structure to be lifted away from the press.
In Fig. 4a modified structure is illustrated which accomplishes the same function as the structure shown in the preceding figures, differin in structure however, in the employment of a portion which. is movable laterally relatively to other portions of the device towards and away from the hook to affect a connection of the devicev and the hook, this movable portion having means for releasably engaging certain portions of the hook.
In this structure a member 11 is employed which may be constructed and pro-- vided with means such as the housing, 1
spring, etc., this portion also being designed to accommodate the end of the shaft in a manner similar to that previously described. The other portion as 10 is hinged or pivoted to the member 11 at 45..
