Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DAUs- MANN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Brooklyn, in the county of of New York, have li11- vented a certain new and useful Improvement in W eb-Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.

More particularly, in one practlcal embodiment of the invention, I propose to mount or support the web registering devices entirely between and upon the bearm castings of the impression rollers of adjacent spaced printing couples. I provide means whereby the registerlng devices may be adjusted relative to said bearings in order to apply a proper tension to vthe web, to the end that the web fwill be maintained in absolutely precise and accurrate registration with the printingcylinders as it passes succeively from 'one printing couple to another. The bearing castin y press frame and a manmechanism is connected to each of these castings. It will, therefore, be apparent that when the throw-olf mechanism is actuated, theseries of impression rollers with the registering devices mounted upon the bearingcastings for said rollersare bodily moved as a single unit mounted upon the l either into or out of operative position.'n

With the abve and other objects in view my invention consists in the improved printmg press and in the form, construction and relatlve arrangement of the parts constituting the several novel features thereof as above characterized, all -of which wil1\be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing and subseuently incorporated in the subjoined c alms.
In the drawing I have illustrated a fragmentaryT vertical sectional view through a we b, printing press showing several of the prlntlng umts or couples and the web registing devices. It will be understoodthat I have illustrated only so much of the entire press as is requisite to a clear understanding of my present improvement. To

The shaft 14 of the impression roller is journaled at its ends in suitable bearings on the castings 15 which are pivotally mounted at their lower yends upon a transversely extending rod 16 iixed at its extremities inthe side frames 10 of the ress.

Any suitable arrangement of gearing may be provided for driving the prlnting cylinders, such for instance as that shown in my prior application for patent filed Febru ary 28th,1920, Serial #362,030.
In the spaces between the printing couples the endless aprons or blankets 17 are arranged, each blanket extending substantially the entire vertical distance from the pass of one printing couple to the pass of the next lower printing couple. Each blanket is supported at its upper end by a roller 18 which is journaled in slide bearings 22 mounted upon the bearing castings 15 for one ofthe impression rollers 13. The upper .end of the frame 21 is loosely mounted on the ends of the shaft of the roller 18 and in the lower end of this frame a second roller 2O is mounted around which the apron or blanket passes.
A roller 19 is adjustably mounted upon-the frame 21 and engages the inner side of one stretch of the blanket 'to properly tension the same.
The other stretch of the blanket 17 moves over the surface of a brass plate 21 carried by the frame 21.
At its lower *end the frame 21A is adjustably1 supported against gravity movement by means of the screws or bolts 50 which are threaded in rods 24 connecting `the arms 23 which project upwardly from the bearin castings 15 of each impression roller. It wi l thus be readily understood that by-adjusting the screws or bolts- 501 the pressure of the lower end ofthe apron or blanket 17 a inst the paper web may be properly regu ated.. rlhe upper end of the blanket may also be similarly adjusted by means of the vscrews 26' which have a loose or swivel connection to the slide bearings 22 for the upper blanket supporting roller 18.
To the rod 24 connecting each pair of bearing castings 15 a coil spring 26 is attached at one of its ends, the other end of the sprin being connected to the inner end of a t rea ed rod 27 extending through the frame bar 28 of the press. A nut 29 is threaded upon the outer end of said rod whereby the tension of the spring 26 may be A properl adjusted as will be readily understood. he springs 26 act to normally withdraw the individual impression rollers 13 from peripheral contact with the respective printing cylinders 11,
In the operation of the press each of the blankets 17 is continuously driven at substantially the-same speed as the speed of movement of the paper web. rlhis driving means for the blankets which I have not herein illustrated, may be similar to that shown in my application No. 362,030 above referred to. lln another co-pending application for patent filed Januar 17th, 1922,
Serial No. 529,812, I have fu 1y explained tween the couples to the attractive influence I of the electrostatic charge so that the paper is drawn down and ti'ghtly held upon the surface of the traveling blanket, which surface offers a very high frictional resistance to any tendency of the web to deviate from its line of movement between the passes of the rint-ing couples. rThus an absolutely precise and accurate registration of the web with the printing surfaces ofthe cylinders 11 is obtained and the improper superimposing of the impression from one cylinder upon that of another is obviated. It will be apparent that my invention, therefore, particularly lends itself to use in connection with a multi-color rotary gravure press, to which it has actually been applied and used with great success.
Opposite the edge of each frame casting 15, a hand screw 30 is mounted in a part 31 of the press frame and at its inner end has a threaded connection with the nut 32. This nut is connected by means of toggle links 33 withthc bearing castings 15 for the im ression roller. Upon the transverse sha t 34 journaled in the sideframes of the press, the cams 35 are fixed to engage with the re spective to gles 33 and lock the same in extended posltion to thereby hold the impression roller 13 in engagement with the printing cylinder against the action of the springs 26. positely projecting arms 37 are fixed, the upper edges of said arms engaging with the underside of the spaced pivot pins 38 when the toggle 33 is extended. Arms 39 and 40 fixed respectively to the shafts 34 and 36 are connected by a link 41, said link at oneof its ends having a slot 41 to permit' of the shifting movement of the link upon the pin 40 fixed in the arm 40. Additional arms 42 are fixed upon one end of the shafts 34 exteriorly of the side frame 10 of the press, the said latter arms being pivoted to a common actuating bar or member 43. Any suitable means may be provided for imparting an operating movement to theJ member 43.
When the parts are in the position seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be noted that pon a` second transverse shaft 36 oplli all of the impression rollers are locked in their operative positions with, re1ation to the indicated by the arrow since the apron or blanket frames 21 are mounted at their upper ends upon one pair of castings 15`and supported at their lower ends bp pair o castings, said blankets likewise will be maintained in their operative positions with relations to the web. When it is desired to relieve the web from contact by the impression rollers and blankets or aprons, the
means is operated to actuate the connecting bar 43. This bar is moved in the direction or downwardly, and the cams 35 are lirst moved out of engagement with the toggles 33. The lower ends of the links 41 are simultaneously moved relative to the arms 40 and finally engage one o'f the arms 37 projecting from one side of the shaft 36, forcing the lsame downwardly while the other arm 37 exerts an upward ressure against one of the pins 38 and thus reaks the toggle connection, thereby permitting the springs 26 to contract, whereupon the several bearing castings 15 are rocked upon thev supporting rods 16 so that the impression rollers are moved 'away from the printing cylinders. Owing to the manner of mounting the static charge producing blankets with their ysupporting frames as above described, said blankets are also moved simultaneously with the castings 15 and as a unit threwith out of their operative positions between the passes of the printing couples, so that the web is relieved from the iniuence of the electrostatic charges throughout the length of the web extending between the printing couples in one opera tion. Thepaper web can then be easily removed from the press and a new web threaded downwardly between the passes of the printing couples. The movement of the actuating bar 43 is now reversed so that the cams 35 are caused to exert a downward pressure upon the toggle connections 33, thereby spreading said connections and returning the impression rollers and the blankets to their former operative positions.
v While the throw-off mechanism above described in detail has given excellent results in practical operation nevertheless this speclic throw-ott' mechanism is not necessarily essential to the purposes of the present invention, and it is not only possible, but in certain cases might be found desirable, to substitute various other mechanical variations for the throw-off mechanism herein disclosed. The present improvement is, therefore, to be understood as broadly comprehending amanually operable throw-olila mechanism regardless of lts detail characteristics which is in operative connection with the impression roller bearing castings or other parts associated with the impression rollers whereby the unitary shifting movement of the impression rollers and the web registering devices between the spaced the stop screws 25 of the next lower therefore, claimed this A is app printing couples may be accomplished'substantially in the same manner which I have hereinbefore described. In so far as I am aware, I believe it to be entirely new in the art to associate and arrange the impression roller bearings and the registering devices ina web printing press so that they may be shifted or moved toopera-tive or inoperative position as a single unit and by means of one and the same mechanical operation. Accordingly, notwithstanding the more or less detail nature of my present disclosure, the invention is not to be otherwise limited, and my purpose to thus broadly define the improved combination in the appended clalms will at once become apparent.
I desire it to be further specifically understood that the web re istering means might be considerably varie in its form and construction from that herein shown, and indeed it is not essential in the generic aspect of my present improvement that an electrostatic charge producing means shall be utilized for the purpose of eiiecting registration, although since I have found that the utilization of such electrostatic charges gives the best results in practise, I have, feature broadly in combination with the impression roller bearings and the throw-oil mechanism connected therewith.
In view of the foregoing, it is to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all necessary mechanical modications which may be required in order to satisfac torily meet peculiar conditions incident to the ty e of press to which the improvement ied and as may fairly be considered to come within the spirit and scope of the inventin as claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a printing press having a plurality of spaced printing units, each mcluding an element having movably supported bearings, a web registering device arranged in each of the spaces between the spaced printing units, means supporting the web registering devices between and upon the movable bearings of the adjacent'. I
printing units for movement as a unit with said bearings, and a manually operable throw-ofi' mechanism connected to said bearmgs.
2. In combination with a printing press* in the spaces between the printing coup es,
-means for mounting said devices upon the impression rollerl bearings of adjacent couples for movement as a unit therewith, and a throw-oli' mechanism common to a of the printing couples and operatively conlnected with the impression roller bearings thereof to simultaneouslyy move the impression rollers and the registering devices into or out of eiective relation with the web.
4. In combination with a printing press having a pluralit of spaced printing couples each including an impression roller and movable bearings therefor, web registering devices arranged in the spaces between the printing couples, means for mounting said registering impression roller bearings of adjacent couples for adjustment relative to said-bearings and for" bodily movement as a unit therewith, and a throw-off mechanism common to all of said lprinting couples and operatively connected to the impression roller bearings to simultaneously move the impression rollers and the registering devices intl? and outY of eli'ective relation with the we 5. 6. In combination with a printing press having 'a plurality of spaced printing couples each including an impression roller and-movable bearings therefor, means supported between and upon the movable impression roller bearings of adjacent couples for subjecting the web extending between said couples to the influence of an induced electrostatic charge to maintain the web in registering relation with the printing surdevices upon the 4faces, and a throw-off mechanism common to all of said printing couples connected to the impression roller bearings to simultaneously move the impression rollers and the electrostatic charge inducin means into and out of effective relation with the web.
7. In combination with a printing press having a printing unit including complemental elements, means acting to normally withdraw one of said elements from iperative relation to ainV opposed element, and manually controllable means including pivotally connected parts to retain said elements in operative relation against the action of said withdrawing means and a member coacting with one of said parts operating lto lock said pivotally connected parts against relative pivotal movement.
8. In combination with a printing press having a printing unit including complemental elements, means acting to normally withdraw one of said elements from operative relation to the opposed element, means for adjusting said first named element when in operative position, including relatively movable parts, means coacting with one of said parts to lock said first named element in its adjustedposition in operative relation to the opposed element, an element coacting with one of` said relatively movable parts and .a common means for actuating said last named means and said element to there-V by cause a relative movement of said parts and an impression ro ler,lmeans for withdrawing each of the impression rollers from operative relation with the associated printing cylinders, toggles for holding. the impression rollers in operative position against the action vof said withdrawing means,
means for locking each toggle in an extended position, a-braling means foreach toggle, and a common manually operable means for first actuating the locking means to released position and then actuatin 'said braking means to thereb permit of t e simultaneous action of all og the withdrawing means to simultaneously move the impression rollers toan inoperative position.
