Description
A. W. ANNERT CLEANING APPARATUS FOR WATER MAINS A ril 7, 1925.
Filed Feb Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
UNITED STATES AUGUST W. ANNERT, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CLEANING APPARATUS FOR WATER MAINS.
Application filed February 1, 1922. Serial No. 533,372.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AUGUST IV. ANNERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cleanhereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a means to relieve mains, pipes or the like of sediment or collection of foreign and undesirable matter.
An important object is to provide a means to accomplish the end stated for connection to the main or the like having a depressible means normally elevated by the pressure of water within the main and adapted for reciprocation to agitate the water so as to dislodge sediment or foreign matter from the main.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating one practical embodiment.
In said drawing he view is in vertical section and illustrates the apparatus in connection with a water main, the normal position of the plunger being in full lines and the depressed position being shown in dotted lines.
In carrying out the invention, a cylinder is provided at 10 of a suitable size and material having a base 11 which may be suitably supported and shaped to receive a foot of the operator to maintain the device in an operative position during actuation. A ca p 12, preferably removable and of any desired construction may be applied to the cylinder 10 and a piston rod 13 is slidable through said cap and within the cylinder 10 has a suitable piston or plunger at 14. handle or manipulating bar is provided at 15 on the upper end of rod 13 exteriorly of the plunger 14.
A water main is suggested at 16 and the apparatus is adapted for connection thereto as by means of a nipple 17 on the cylinder 10. \Vater under pressure is contained in the main 16 as usual and the pressure theremg Apparatus for ater Mains; and I do.
of normally forces the piston 1stto its highest position as shown in full lines in the drawing.
Adjacent the top of the cylinder 10 a pet-cock 18 or another means is provided so that a vent opening from the cylinder 10 to the atmosphere is afforded. It will be noted that the vent opening or pet-cock 18 is provided at such a location that it is always above the height to which water can rise within the cylinder 10.
\Vith the apparatus installed as shown, vertical reciprocation of the piston lby manipulation of the handle 15 will force water from the cylinder 10 back into the main which will thereafter flow again into the cylinder 10 under the pressure of the water within the main, thus effectively agitating the water and causing it to dislodge sediment or foreign matter which may have collected within the mainand interferes with the flow of water therein.
The opening 18 relieves the cylinder 10 of pressure above the piston 14.
'It will be noted that the piston 1 1 forms a seal to prevent passage of water past it and through the pet-cock 18.
In addition, the use of check valves is obviated.
Having thus described my invention, in one embodiment, itis to be understood of course that various changes may be made therein provided they fall within the spirit and scope.
What I claim. as my invention is s In combination with means to contain water under pressure, a cylinder disposed at substantially a right angle thereto, a base carried by said cylinder adapted to be engaged by the operators foot, a laterally olfset connection on said cylinder above said base in communication with said means, a piston operable in said cylinder constituting a seal and normally maintained elevated by the pressure of the water therein, and a manipulating rod extending from the piston and exteriorly thereof adapted for hand reciprocation. r
In testimony whereofI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST w. ANNERT. lVitnesses I F. H. RIGGETTY, I
GEORGE A. MELLISH.
