um'ran STA ES PATENT caries;
ELIAKIM M. van PEI/I, or ELIZABETH, AND RALPH H. Dixon, or NEWARK, NEW
GOAL-SAVING DEVICE.
1 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIAKIM M. VAN
PELT and RALPH H. DIXON, citizens of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, and at Newark, county of Essex. and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Saving Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art. to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally to improvements in fuel-saving devices; and the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed device, made of any non-inflammable ma terial, and of any suitable shape, for use of the device with any form of coal-burning apparatus, resulting in a saving in the consumption ofthe coal. I
The present invention has for its principal object, the provision of a coal-saving means for coal-burning furnaces, and'the like, made, preferably, in the form of a disc of a non-inflam1nable material, adapted to be placed upon the bed of burning coal of any stove, furnace or similar heating unit, the device being provided with an escape means for the gases arising from the fuelb'ed, so as to permit such gasor gases to commingle with air above the fuel-bed, and to thereby provide a complete burning of the arising gases, which heretofore escaped with a consequent loss in heat units. I
()ther objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present i n vention.
\Vith the various objects of the present.
invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily,.in the novel coal-saving device hereinaftermore fully set. forth, for use with any form. of heating apparatus, the device being made of a non-inflammable material, and while usually of a circular shape, may be made in any otliersuit-able shape, so as to be properly fitted within and conform to the shape of the fire-box or int i of t e t ve, furnac 01' other hea :edge View of the Application filed August 1.8, 1924. Serial No. 732,698.
ing unit, with which the device is to be used.
accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevationof a furnace, wit-h a portion of its wall being represented broken away, showing a portion of the fuelbed, with the coal-saving device placedin its operative position upon thebed of fuel. are a plan. and bottom Figures 2 and 3 view, respectively, of a coal-saving device, showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention; Figure 4: is a side elevation of. the device; Figure 5 is a.trans verse sectional representation of the same; and Figure 6 is a detail vertical section taken on line 66 in Figure 2,. said view being made on an enlarged scale. e i V Figure 7 is a view, similar, to Figure 4, of a slightly modified construction of coalsaving device; Figure 8 is a. bottom view ofanother modified form of coal-saving device, but still embodying theprinciplesof the present invention; and Figure 9 is an enddevicefshown in said Fig, ure 8. a .1
Similar characters of reference are em,- ployed in all ofthe said above described, views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referringno-w to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a heater of any one of the usual constructions, 2 is the usual fire-box, and 3 s the grate, upon which is located a fuel 4, such through theusual fire-box door 5.
In Figures 2, 3, .4; and 5 of the drawings, is illustrated one'form of coal-saving device, the same comprising a rurcnlar body-element or plate 6, made of a non-inflamn' able material, such. as asbestos, or the like, the said body-element or plate 6 being provided with a preferably centrally disposed open ing 7, surrounded by an upwardly projecting marginal flange 8, providing with said opening 7 a suitable gasflue' forconducting the unburnt gases from the bed of fuel, above the. said body-elementv or plate 6, into the fir b xor chamber2ot t e nace,
The invention is clearly illustrated .in the loo as will be understood from an inspection of Figure 1 ofrthe drawings. The said marginal flange 8, as will be evident, is also. made of anon-inflammable material- Suitably disposed upon the lower surface of the said body-element or plate 6, are
ribs or battens, as 9, these being arranged substantially as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, and
a fuel, 7 with being" of'suc h width, that, when arranged in the manner lllustrated 1n said'Figure el, suitable gas-conducting spaces 10in communication with the main opening- 7 will be provided. 'lihus, when the device has been placed upon the ignited bed of the ri-bsf or battens 9 serving as supports for the body-element or plate 6., the spaces 10 located between said ribs 9 provide" suitable chambers in which the gas or gases are collected, to be conveyed through the conducting spaces, into and through the flue to be delivered into"-the fire-b X or chamber 2, and thereby connn'in- V gling with the air to be ignited and conbut it will be understood that the said sumed, resulting in the complete burning of the. arising gases; One method of securing the said ribs '9, which are also made of a nonrinfiammable material, to the under side of the body-element or plate '6', is by means of suitably constructedpins or rivets 12,
or'battens may be suitably secured to the said body-element or plated by moulding or otherwise. I 1 i While in the construction illustrated in Figures 3, 4t and 5 of the drawings, the said ribs or battensf'9 are "shown of a square .or rectangular shape in cross-section, it will obe evident "that the said ribs or battens may 'beotherwise'shapethas indicated in Figure f the drawings, the body-element or plate 6' of the device being provided in this case with'ribs. 13 which are V-shapedv in crosssection. T
When'the coal-saving device is to be used with heaters or furnaces having a square or rectangular grate-surface, then the device my be made as indicated in Figures. 8 and 1 opening 15, surrounded 7 lb, Uponi-t-q lower surface, the said bodythe drawings, in which case thereforcnce-character let indicates a non-inflamjniable body eleinent or plate of a rectangularshape, provided with a centrally disposed by a marginal flange element or plateis provided with laterally extending supporting ribs 17, provided withchannelled or cutout portions, as 18,- for thepassage of the gas or gases therethrough,
andi-nto the, gasrfiue formed'by said opening 15' andthe flange 16, as will lee-clearly evident from an inspection of said Figures .8and9;
From the foregoing descriptionv of the present invention it will be seen that have devised'a simply constructed and an effective coal-savingdevice made of a non- .du-cingunit, supporting inflammable material, and conforming to the shape of the inside of any'coal-burning furnace, or similar heat-producing unit, the device being readily placed directly up n {the fuel-bed, the gas-opening of'thedevice being properly placed so as to freely perv nrit. the gases from the fuel to escape to the space above the fuel-bed, and there to be: come ignited. In that case, therefore, all the gases which'heretofore escaped with a lossof ,the heat-giving units, are entirely consumed, resulting in an increased efliciency ofconsequ-entsaving in the consumption of the fueli.
Y 1 Of course, we are awaret-ha-t'some changes maybe made in the general arrangements the heat-producing unit, and a and combinations of the several parts com- '7 the lower face of said body-element, said ribs being also made of'a non-inflammable material and being. arranged, whenthe device is placed upon the bed of fuel, to provide gas-collecting. spaces, and the saidbodyelement being further provided. with means for conveyingthe unconsnnied gases from said collectingspaces for consumption above the said body-element. j s
V 21. A coal-saving device comprising a body-element made of a non-inflammable material, said device, being adapted to be placed upon the bed of'lfuel of a heatrpre ducing unit, supporting ribs extendingfrom the" lower face of said body-element, said ribs being also material and being arranged, when the dev'i-ceis placed upon the bed of fuel, to promade of a non-inflammableribsfextending from made of a non-inflammable v-ide gascollecting spaces, and the said bo'dyelement being further provided with an opening and an upwardly extending marginal flange surrounding said opening, all
arranged toprovide a flue into and through which the ni -consumed gases are conveyed from said ollecting spaces "forconsumption above the said body-element. 1 I I p 3. The herein-describedcoal-saving device comprising a body-element'rnade of anoninflammab-le material, said body-element being provided with a centrally disposed opening, ribs disposed upon the lower-surface f body-element, said ribs-being'also made of a non-inflammable material, .aid ribs radiating outwardly from said opening, the said ribs being arranged to provide with the body-element a plurality of gascollecting spaces,,and a means of communication between said gas-collecting spaces and the said opening for conveying the collected gases above said body-element. x
4. The herein-described coal-saving device comprising a body-element made of a noninflammable material, said body-element being provided with a centrally disposed opening, ribs disposed upon the lower surface of said body-element, said ribs being also made of a non-inflammable material, said ribs radiating outwardly from said opening,
the said ribs being arranged to provide with the body-elementj'a plurality of gas-collecting spaces, a means of communication between said gas-collecting spaces and the said opening, and a marginal flange surrounding said opening and forming in connection therewith a flue, all arranged for conveying the collected gases above said body-element.
