ETHAN I. norms, or. CENTRAL VALLEY, new YORK, lemma To ELANNE RY oLT 'coiviramnor PITTSBURGH, esnnsynvxmn STAY BOLT Fo'n BOILERS.
Application filed February 26, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETI-IAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Central Valley, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay Bolts for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolts for boilers and more particularly to means to facilitate the testing of the bolt,--one object of the invention being to provide simple means in a staybolt whereby, upon inspection, it may be definitely determined whether the bolt is broken.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in section showing a staybolt and illustrating an embodiment of my invention, and
Figures 2 and 3 are detail views.
The inner or fire-box sheet of a boiler is indicated at 1 and provided with a hole through which the threaded inner end portion 2 of a staybolt 3 passes, the inner end of said staybolt being upset as at 4 against the inner face of the sheet 1. The staybolt 3 is provided at its outer end with a head 5 which may be rounded and a telltale hole 6 extends from the inner end of the bolt,
through the body portion thereon and terminates within the head 5.
A breakable rod 7, preferably consisting of wire approximately one-sixteenth of an inch in diameter is located within the telltale hole 6 and is connected with the bolt at respective ends of said hole. The rod or wire 7 is preferably screw threaded and the means which connects it with the bolt at the outer end of the telltale hole within the bolt head 5, may consist of a slug or sleeve 8 of soft metal such as Babbitt metal, zinc, lead or other metal which is capable of being more or less readily compressed. The soft metal slug 8 will first be applied to one end of the rod or wire 7 and then inserted into the telltale hole with said rod. A tube may then be inserted into the telltale hole and caused to bear against the inner end of Serial No. 621,382.
said soft metal slug. Pressure applied to the inner end of the tube will cause the slug to be compressed and therefore to tightly bind on the threaded rod or wire and also against the wall of the telltale hole near the outer end of the latter and thus the rod or wire will be efiectually connected with the staybolt at or near the outer end of the telltale-hole.
A conical plug 9 which may be of copper is inserted into the conical inner end portion of the telltale hole and this plug is made with a threaded socket portion 10 to screw onto the inner end portion of the rod or wire 7 and thus connect the inner end portion of the latter with the inner end portion of the bolt. The plug 9 may be provided in its larger end with a slot 11 to receive a screw driver.
With my improvements, should the bolt become broken, the rod or wire (being connected at both of its ends with the staybolt) will also become broken. If, upon removing the plug 9, a portion of the rod would be removed with it, the inspector would know at once that the bolt is broken and must be replaced by a new bolt. Should the bolt become sufficiently ruptured to permit the admission of water into the telltale hole, the hydraulic test of the bolt would cause such water to be forced past the removable plug 9 and thus indicate that the bolt is fractured.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a staybolt hav- 7 ing a telltale hole extending from its inner end approximately to but not through the outer end of the bolt, of an indicating rod located in said telltale hole and connected at its ends respectively to the bolt near respective ends of said telltale hole.
2. The combination with a staybolt having a telltale hole extending from its inner end approximately to but not through the outer end of the bolt, of an indicating rod located in said telltale hole, a soft metal member connecting said rod withthe stayb-olt approximately at the outer end of the telltale hole, and a removable plug in the inner end portion of the telltale hole and connecting the inner end portion of said rod with the inner end portion of the staybolt.
3. The combination with a staybolt having atelltale hole extending from the inner end thereof approximately to but not through the outer end of said bolt of a threaded rod located in said telltale hole, a soft metal member engaging said rod and pressed into the outer end portion of the telltale hole, and a removable plug threaded on the inner end portion of said rod and located Within the inner end portion of the telltale hole. 10 In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing Witness.
