Description

Patented Apr. '7, 1925.
rais,
ARTHUR I. RISSER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNGIL T0 U. S. BOTTLERS IVEACHINERY C0., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
CLUTCH.
To all whom t may con-cern.'
lie it known that I, ARTHUR I. Rissna, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county oi Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clutches, of which the following is a speciiication.
This application is a division of my earlier application for bottle lilling machine, Serial Number 668,457, filed Gctober l5, 1923.
This invention relates to clutches but more particularly to clutches having special value in machines oiu the above mentioned class in which a reciprocating member, speciiically a bar, carries a siphon which has to be inserted in and Withdrawn Jfrom the neck of a bottle placed on a table adjacent to the end of the bar, it being necessary that the Siphon be accurately positioned and carried in order to prevent its striking the sides of the neck of the bottle and breaking it instead of entering the bottle as its should for proper functioning of the machine.
'Ihe object of the invention is to provide a clutch which is especially applicable to the foregoing use; which can be very easily and cheaply made; which is very accurate and ecient in operation and is not readily liable to get out or order.
rIhre invention consists in means attaining the foregoing and other objects which will be hereafter more fully set forth in the specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a fragmentary view of part oit a bottle iilling machine in which the clutch 01"' this invention, shown partially in section, is in use.
Figure 2 is aside view, taken from the right of the clutch mechanism appearing in Figure l. p
Figure 3 shows the parts of the clutch mechanism in disassembled condition.
In equipping the, for the purpose ol this invention, conventional bottle filling machine with the mechanism ot this invention, the lower end of a vertical, reciprocal bar lO is provided with a suitable coupling or clutch l2 carrying a siphon l/l having a relatively short arm 16 adapted to enter an adjacent bottle 18 to be filled resting on table 20 in approximately the position shown in Figure l and a comparatively longer arm Divided and this application filed April 22 entering the liquid tank 24 to a point materially below the level et the liquid 26 which is to be transferred from the tank into the bott-le.
In the particular embodiment ot the invention here illustrated, the coupling l2 is detachably secured to the adjacent bar l0 by means of a suitable bolt or set screw 28 and is recessed at its lower end to receive a handle or stem 30 rigid with the Siphon tube lele, said stem being detachably rigidly secured in place by set screw 32 in the outer wall of the clutch having its pointed end entering a il-shaped notch 34: formed in the stem. rIhe stem 30 carries one or more projecting lugs 36, each entering a suitable notch 38 provided for it in the lower end of the clutch, the same adapted to prevent rotation of the siphon on a vertical axis through the bar l0. For the same reason, the lower end oi? bar l0 rests in notches 40 cut in opposite sides of clutch coupling` 12; By thus holding the Siphon against rotation and by rigidly securing it through the action of set screw 32, engaging notch 34e, each Siphon is rigidly, positively positioned for operative work in relation to iilling bottle 18 as fully set forth in said original application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A clutch device for detachably connecting a Siphon 01"' a bottle filling machine to a'siphon support, comprising a member secured to the support, a cylindrical opening in said member adapted to receive a cylindrical stem on the siphon to be connected With the support, means to secure the siphon stem against longitudinal movement within the opening in said member, and means to prevent rotation of the siphon stem within the opening in said member consisting of a lug on the stem adapted to ent-er a notch in the member, said notch and lug cooperating to limit inward movement of the stem within the member.
2. A clutch device for detachably connecting a Siphon of a bottle iilling machine to a siphon support, comprising' a tubular member one end of which is detachably connected to the support and the other end of which is adapted to receive a stem on the Siphon, a screw passing transversely through a Wall of' the tubular member into an an nuler'reeess in the stem to secure the stem against longitudinal movement within the tubuizir member, and lug on the stementering a notch formed in and opening` of the stem Within the member. 10V
In `Witness whereof, l have hereunto subscribed my name.
ARTHUR I. RISSER.
