Jl J. FITZFATRICK PUMPING DEVICE FOR OIL WELLS Fl'ed NewK 24, 1923 Patented Apr. 7, 1925. l
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
J' EREMIAH J', FITZPATRICK, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
PUMPING 'DEVICE For. on. WELLS.
To all lwhomv t may concern:
Be itfknown that I, JEREMIAH RICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumping Devices for Oil Wells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumping devicesV for oil wells, andvmore particularly to a combined jet owing device and packer.
Many wells in` the oil fields have an accumulation of gas suiiicient to owthe oil without pumpin v suchy conditions 1s equently vintermittent and when the gas pressure ceases. To start the flow of 'necessary to employ artificial the usual type of pump.
An obl y provision-:vo a'j'etflow device which may be readily moved .from inoperative to operative positionandgwhich is adapted to be attached intermediate 4in the well tubing at a distance above the ordinaryv working barrel at the bottom of the well.
r A further object of the invention is the provision of" a jet flowing deviceJ and packer by means of which water may be removed from the oil sand and the well restored to life, after which the ldevice continues to operate as a tubing packer. A
A Jfurther-object of the invention is the provision of a packer which may be arranged in the tubing4 and which does not interfere with the operation of the usual.
numeral 1 designates a section of ordinary4 well tubing to which the device is' adapted' to be attached. A nipple 2 which is swaged or bell-shaped, is arranged on the lower end of the well tubing. As shown, the upper but the flow under' ofthepresent invention is the' application mea November'u, 192s. serial; Nu. 676,799.
end of the nipple is internally threaded to receive the external threads formed on the end of the tubing. A cylinder 3 is secured to the lower end of the nipple and the cylinder forms a housing for the flowing device.
A bushing 4 is arranged lin the lower end of the housing cylinder forming a' partition separating the interior of cylinder 3 from the space below. This bushing is provided with av central aperture which is internally threaded to receive a section 5 of well tubing the, upper end'of which communicates with the interior of cylinder 3. The' tubing extends downwardly through the apparatus and is rovided with the usual working barrel an standing valve adjacent the bottom .o f the well. The packer 'is preferably arranged at about 20 feet above the workmg barrel ofthe well. The bushing Lis further provided 'with apertures 6 and nipples 7, having central o enngs, arev arranged in these apertures. allvalvesS are arranged on the nipples and these ball valves are adapted to be covered by suitable crowns 9, having openings 10 therein for the passage of gas. The bushing is provided with a downwardly depending cylindrical por-A tion 11, forming a gas header and a chamber 12 is provi ed t ereby surrounding the well tubing 5.' A taperingportion 13 is formed on the bottom oi the gas header or Y bushing and this tapering portion is provided with openings 14; to permit as and fluid torpass -upwardly therethroug when theltubing is being lowered. in the oil well. A cylinder 15 is secured, to the bottom'of the tapering portion 13 and this c linder extends downwardly to receive the ase of the packer. A stud or in 16 is arranged on the exterior of the cyllnder. A collar 17 v is slidably arranged around the cylinder'l,
and this collar is provided with a taperedv inner wall 18, adapted to snu ly' receive the tapered lower portion 13 of t e gas header. A cylinder 19 is-mounted on this collar and slidably surrounds. the inner cylinder 15. The cylinder 19 is provided with a slot hava vertical yportion 20, an upper horizonin v ta? portion 21, and a lower horlzontal porl tion 22 for the reception of the pin 16. l
Steel springs 23' are arranged on the exterior of this cylinder and bowed outwardly as shown. The outer bowed portionI of these springs contact with the inner surface of the well casing (not shown).
Beneath the cylinder 19, a collar 24 is sextubing and lowered until the anchor on the bottom of the well tubing strikes the bottom of the well. lVhen .the bottom is reached, the tubing is raised slightly to allow the pin 16 to ride freely in the upper horizontal portion 21 of the slot in cylinder 19, when it is given a quarter turn to the-left to bring ythe stud or pin 16 in alinement with the vertical portion 2O ofthe slot. The tubing is then lowered until the pin reaches the bottom of the aperture' when it is again turned to lock the apparatus in closed position, closing the openings 14 and setting the packer. The outer portion of the bow of springs 23 contact with the inner surface of the well-casing and during the operation of setting the packer they hold 4cylinder 19 in a fixed position permitting the cylinder 15 to ywhich pin 16 is attached to move freely both vertically andhorizontally within the confines 'of slot-in the cylinder 19. The
' rubber or rubber composite skirt 26 swells by contact with the oil on its being lowered into the casing and after it is placed in p0- sition, gas pressure from beneath causes it to expand to form a gas-tight fit. It will be apparent from the foregoing description that during the process of locating the jet ow packer in an oil wellthat there is an open avenue for the iuid between the cylinder 15 and the tubing 5 with an' outlet at the upper end through apertures 14, but
after the Ipacker is set and the apertures 14 are closed the as pressure must operate through the pac er and the space between I cylinder 15 and tubing 5to the gas header y or bushing 4 where it is directed through apertures 6, nipples 7 and ball valves 8 thence' into tubing 1 where it produces the Jetting effect lifting the oil from below, the working barrel, and always keeping the gas pressure off the well sand. A
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example'I of the same, andthat various changes in the shape,
' size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the 'invention or the 'scope of the sub-f joinedl claims.
