Application filed December 5, 1923. Serial No. 678,640.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STELLA J. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manuscript Holders for Typewriters, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to a manuscript holder in the form of an attachment for typewriters wherein the notes or copy work of typists may be conveniently supported by the typewriter and this in a position directly in front of the operator thereof for obviously overcoming the necessity of the typist having first to look toward the right or left where the notes or copy work is positioned as the case may be, and then returning to the keys of the typewriter which is a great strain on the eyes and neck, the primary object of this invention residing in the provision of such a manuscript holder wherein the same may be conveniently associated with typewriters of practically all forms.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein there is shown the most practical embodiment of the present invention with which I am at this time familiar and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the different views,
Figure 1 is a reduced front elevational view of a manuscript holder for typewriters constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the holder, the same being shown as applied to a typewriter,
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through said holder for more clearly disclosing the construction of one of the manuscript clasp members,
Figure 4. is an enlarged perspective of the movable member of one of said clasp members,
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view of the holder for more clearly disclosing in edge elevation, one of said clasp elements, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the manuscript holder, the same belng shown as positioned upon a typewriter.
New having particular reference to the drawing, a manuscript holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, embodies a substantially rectangular shaped open frame that embodies spaced. parallel side bars interconnected attheir upper and lower ends by cross bars 6 and 7, respectively. The side bars 55 are formed at their lower ends with extension legs 88 that are in turn provided with forwardly extending spaced fingers 9-9. As more clearly shown in Figure 2" these spaced fingers 99 are formed horizontally at an ansrle to the transverse plane of the frame whereby when said fingers are positioned upon the usual connecting bar (t behind the paper guide 6 of the typewriter A, said frame will be positioned at an inclination with respect to the typewriter.
The side bars 5 -5 of the frame are each formed with a pair of inwardly extending spaced fingers 10 that comprise the stationary jaws of spring clasps 11. Each of these fingers 10 is formed adjacent its inner end and upon opposite edges with forwardly ex tending spaced ears 12 within which engage the inwardly extending ears 13 of the movable jaws 14 of said clasp members 11 which movable jaws are of a shape clearly shown in Figure 4. Said cars 12 and 1? are formed with registering openings for the reception of a pivot pin 15 and surrounding said pivot pin between the ears 13 of the respective jaw member 14 of that clasp 11 is a spring 16 that serves as a means for maintaining the movable i aw 14 into close contact with the stationary jaw 10 as per Figure 3.
It will thus be seen that after the manuscript holder has been positioned upon the typewriter in a manner as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 6. the manuscript may be readily associated therewith by securing the edges thereof to said frame through the medium of the clasp members 11.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel and efficient form of manuscript holder for typewriters and one that will fully anticipate the objects above set forth.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
5 typewriters l0 their freeends With laterally Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent"is:- 7
A manuscript holder for attachment to con'iprising an open frame having upper and lower cross bars, and side oars, said side bars projecting downwardly beyond the lower cross bar to provide attaching legs, said legs being provided at directed spaced engage an existing part oi? the typewriter, and a plurality of pairs offopposed manuscript engaging clasps carried by the vertical side bars of said frame, the stationary jaws of said clasps being formed integral with the side bars of said frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
STELLA J. EDWARDS.
