IMPROVEMENT IN SACKlNG-BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,226, dated July 2l, 1874; application filed February 1,1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, vGHARLEs H. loLL, of the city and county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture ofBrooms, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my apparatus for compressing' the brooms preparatory to applying the sacking; Fig. 2, the same, showingthe manner of compressing the broom and applying the sacks 5 and Fig. 3 a rear elevation of the apparatus.
My invention consists in sackin g brooms by means of sacks made independently of the process of sacking; and in the apparatus for compressing the brooms, constructed to operate -as herein shown and described.
The frame-work A is constructed as shown in the drawings. Betweenits uprights a metal trough, B, is permanently lxed. A similar trough, C, is placed in an inverted position between the sides of the trough B, and swings freely upon the bolts D D. The two troughs B and O constitute the compressing-box of the apparatus. It can be adjusted, by means of the bolt-holes E E, to suit the Various sizes of brooms. The sack F is made, independent of the process of sacking, of paper or other suitable material, and of any form to suit the broom or brooms to which it is to be applied, and having its sides and one end securely fastened before using it.
rlhe manner of applying these sacks is as follows: The brooms are inserted into the compressing-box by passing their handles into the frontend of it, and pushing them through until the ends of the strands are even with the front edges of the box, the upper part O be` ing raised, as shown in Fig. l, for the purpose of allowing the brooms to pass in freely. Sufficient pressure is then applied to the upper part C to compress the strands, as shown in Fig.2, when the saekF can be passed freely over the compressing-box without being caught by the strands of the brooms. The brooms are then pushed back out of the front end of the compressing-box, carrying with' them in their course the sack F, which completely envelopes their strands.
Instead of a single broom, as shown in the drawings, bundles containing a dozen or any desired number of brooms may be put into a single sack by the same operation.
Byusing the sack herein described, it can be readily slipped partially off for the purpose of examining the quality of the brooms, and replaced without difficulty. It also protects the -corn of the broom, after it has been bleached, from discoloration bythe atmosphere or dust.
I am aware that brooms have heretofore been sacked by tying or sewing sheets of paper or sacking around them 5 but this process, while it is much more expensive and laborious, does not effect the same purpose that mine does, as the brooms cannot be examined without removing the sacki n g 5 and its replacement involves the same amount of labor that it rc quired when originally put on. I do not, broadly, claim the sacking of brooms.
That I claim as my invention is- 1. The mode of sacking brooms herein described, viz., by irst compressing the strands composing the lie-ads, as speciiied, and, while compressed, enveloping the heads of the brooms by means of a sack, F, made inde pendently of the process of sacking', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the frame A with the compressing-box, consisting of the troughs B and C, constructed to operate substantially as herein set forth.
3. In combination with lthe sack F, when used for the purpose of sacking brooms, a compressing apparatus, construeted substantially -as and for the purposes herein specified.
