T0 all wlw/Hi it may 00910611117: Y
Be it known that I, Lnavrs C. Barinas, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ott' Easton, county of Northampton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented accertain rlar Extractor', of which the following is a specitication, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to exhausting appara-tus such as centrifugal blowers and the like. More particularly the features of invention have reference to blowers and exhausters which are adapted to operate on fluid such asilluminating gas and the like which hold in suspension heavy liquid or semisolid matter such as tar.
One object of this invention is to separate and extract tar and similar' heavy sub.- stances trom the gas during the exhausting ot the This object is accomplished in the preferred form of the invention by directing the gas at a high velocity in a curved path. The greater momentum of the heavy substances causes them to be projected in more nearly a straight line toward an adajacent chamber in which they may collect to be drawn off.
The invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings in which there is shown an improved form which the invention may assume in practice. The drawingis a longitudinal sectional elevation of a blower and eXhauster in which the apparatus for separating coal tar from the gas is included as anintegral part.
The exhauster is preferably of the centrifugal blower type, having a casing A which may, if desired, be formed in two or more sections, the lower portion being provided with an inlet B tor connection with a suply pipe C'. An outlet D is also formed integrally with the casing- A and is adapted to be attached in any suitable manner to an. outlet pipe lll. `A pail' of jour-nais F mounted on brackets Cr support a rotating shaft H. mpollers J preferably of the open type are mounted on the shaft H and are adapted to rotate between shrouds K formed integrally with or secured in the casing A. rlhere may be as many impellers J provided as desired, in the present instance there being two, it being understood that the blower may be single or multi-stage. The blower is adapted to draw the gas from the inlet B into a chamber L at the entrance to the impellers J and by means of the lirst:
stage impeller to project the gas between the shrouds K through a diffuser throat O into an intermediate pressure chamber P leads ing to the entrance of the second stage impeller J byV which thel gas is further compressed land impelled at high pressure through the second stage diffuser O into the chamber Q leading to the outlet D.
The gas act-ed on by the impellersJ is projected into the diffuser O at a high velocity. Tar or heavier matter carried in suspension is projected with the gas, but on account of the increasing radius of the diffuser C and the increasing cross sectional area thereof, the velocity of the gas decreases as it approaches theintermediate pressure chamber P. The heavier matter in the gas, however, having greater moment-urn than the gas, will be projected in a generally straight line radially while the gas more readily Hows around the curved end R of the diffuser O Vto e-nter the pressure chamber P. To receive the tar and heavier matter, the casing is slotted as at S in line with the straight portion of the diffuser O. An annular chamber T into which the slot S leads is adapted to collect the tar and permit the same to flow by gravity to a sump U from which it may be drawn off through a pipe V provided with a valve WV.
Part of the tar may pass the slot S and be lcarried into the second stage of compression and accordingly the second stage diffuser throat O is provided with slot X similar to the slot S and an annular chamber Y communicating with the slot to conduct `the tar to a sump Z located at a low point in the casing A. Likewise, a pipe c and a valve b are provided to drain the sump Z.
',lhroughout the course of the llow oft gas suitable bzll'lles are provided to prevent. and check turbulence in the current. A battle c in the inlet B and smaller vanes al check and cross currents in the 'flow of. gas to the lirst stage impellei el'. Additional vanes e in the inlet chamber L also assists in preventing such cross currents. Radially disposed baliles f in the intermediate pressure chamber P direct the current of gas to the second stage impeller J. Likewise, batlies g in the chamber Q and a baffle L in the outlet D direct the gas with a minimum ofcross currents into the pipe E.
A suitable gasket j between the shrouds K and a collar lZr on the shaft H prev-ents. leakage from the intermediate pressure chamber P and the space behind the iinpellers J. As the pressures on opposite faces o1 the iin'peller J,I are not the saine, causing; an imbalance7 there is provided a Counter-balance drum 0 which on its inner side is exposed to the same pressure as the back faces of the second stage ilnpeller J. The outer 'tace ci the drum 0 is exposed to a negative pressure in a cylil'rdrical lchamber y) 'which `co1iiinuniei'itee by umane of 'a pipe g with the inlet B. y
Labyrinth seals f1" for the shaft Hl. are provided to prevent the escape of 'gas lfro'in the Casing. A chamber s adjacent Seal r adapted to Vprevent air leakage at "the intake end of the shaft H, 'there being provided a pipe t leading` to the inlet B -to till said ch-an'iber with gas by the suction in the inlet chamber L. The Shaft ll im) adapted Vto be driven by any Suitable inotive power which may be mechanically connected by means of the flange u.
A Combined exhauster and Atar extractor for gas comprising a casing, an iiupeller rotatably niounted in said casing, a diil'user elxt'ending radially roin said inipeller and curved at its outer end, an annular chamber in Said casing' adjacent said dil'l'nser and a slot in alignment with the radially extending portion of said dilu'ser adjacent said. curved end 'and leading into said annular chamber x'vhereby tar is projected from said l :dilfuse'r into said slot.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
