Application filed' June 24, 1924-. Serial No. 722,102.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAHLON S. Nniswnm DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Attaching Frames for Furniture Casters; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to furniture casters, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel and simple frame through the medium of which a caster may be readily attached to the leg of an article of furniture of any transverse dimension and configuration.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a caster attaching frame that may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and readily secured to a caster of any construction. 7
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a caster equipped with an attaching frame constructed in accordance with my invention, the caster being shown connected to the leg of an article of furniture by the frame,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the caster and attaching frame,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the attaching frame members, and
Figure 5 is a. perspective view of a slight ly modified form of the attaching frame.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the wheel, 2 the axle, 3 the fork frame, 4 the spindle, 5 the ball bearings, and 6 the bearing cap of a furniture caster. As these parts are of well known construction a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
The attaching frame is U-shaped, it is adapted to receive and be secured to the lower end of the leg 7 of an article of furniture, as shown in Figure 1, and it is adjustable as to length to permit it to be applied and secured to a leg ;ofany trans verse dimensions. The attaching frame comprises similar angular members 8 which are slidably connected togetherupon the bear ingcap 6 by the spindle A1. The horizontalpoi tions 9- 0f the members, 8 rest one upon the other, the lowermost of said portions rests upon the bearing cap 6, and both of said portions are PTOViClGClWitll longitudinal ex tending slots 10 through which the spindle 4 passes. The vertical portions 11 of the members 8 contact with opposite sides of the legs, and are provided with openings 12 to permit the attaching frame to be secured to the leg by screws or other suitable fastening elements. A plate 13 upon which the leg '2' rests is positioned upon the uppermost horizontal member 9, it is provided with an opening 14 through which the spindle 1 passes, and it is securedin place by upsetting the upper end of the spindle as shown at 15. As shown in Figures 1 to 4, the vertical portions 11 of the frame members 8 are flat, and in the modified form of the attaching frame shown in Figure 5 the vertical portions 11 of the frame members 8 are of arcuate formation in horizontal section. When the attaching frame is provided with the flat vertical portions 11 it is especially adapted for securing the caster to the leg of an article of furniture of angular formation in transverse section, and when the attaching frame is "pr-oi l with the arcuate vertical por ions 11 it is especially adapted for securing the caster to the leg of an article of furniture of circular formation in cross section.
As the members 8 are siidably connected together upon the caster, the length of the attaching frame may be varied, to correspond.
to the width of the leg to which the caster is to be applied. After the caster has been applied, screws or other suitable fastening elements are passed through the openings 12 in the vertical portions 11 or 11 into the leg. As the attaching frame receives the lower end of the leg, and as the vertical portions 11 or 11 thereof are secured to opposite lateral sides of the leg, it should be apparent that the caster is firmly secured in appliedposition. As the attaching frame comprises similar members 8 and the plate 13, and as it is secured in applied position by the spindle 4:, it should be apparent that the device may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost and connected to casters of any construction in a ready manner.
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications maybe made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. A furniture caster including angular members having their horizontal portions provided with elongated slots and arranged one upon the other upon the caster, and means carried by the caster and passing through said slots to adjustably connect the members and secure them to the caster, said membersconstituting an adjustable attaching frame.
2. A furniture caster including angular members having their horizontal portions provided with elongated slots and arranged one upon the other upon the caster, a spindle connected to the caster and passing through said slots, and a plate positioned upon the uppermost horizontal portion and secured in place by said spindle, said members constituting an adjustable attaching frame.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAHLON S. NEISVVEYDER.
