D. HOUSTON GOAL FOR BASKET BALL AND LIKE GAMES Fi led Fe b e. 1924 smut,
Patented Mar. 31, 1925.
DENNIS HOUSTON, OF BEN FRANKLIN, TEXAS GOAL FOR BASKET BALL'AND- LIKE GAMES.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS HOUSTON, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ben Franklin, in the county of Delta and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goals for Basket Ball and Like Games, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in goals for basket ball and like games.
The object of the invention is to provide a goal of simple and inexpensive construction which will have great strength, but which will be free from braces or supports likely to interfere with the ball.
A further object is to provide a goal which will not become loose and which may be easily and quickly fastened in place with a minimum number of fastenings.
Another object is to provide a goal which may be made of a single piece of heavy gauge wire, twisted upon itself at the neck, whereby said neck is reinforced at a vital point and a substantial and symmetrical device is produced.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from areading of the followin specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a basket ball goal post equipped with a goal constructed in accordance with my invention,
2 is a plan view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a detail of the brace fastening.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a circular goal ring. In making the goal a single piece of heavy gauge wire or lightrod is bent around a cylindrical form to produce the ring. The ends of the wire are twisted upon each. other to form a reinforced neck 11.
One of the ends is directed axially from the twist to form a shank 12, the outer end of which is provided with screw threads 13.
e, 1924.. Serial No. 691,062.
The other end is bent downwardly to form a depending brace 14. The lower end of the brace is flattened and punched to form an eye 15, although it is possible to form the eye in other ways. It will beseen that the goal is made complete in a simple and expeditious manner. 1
In mounting the goal the backboard A and the goal post B are bored with a hole C of such diameter as to tightly receive the shank 12. When the shank is pushed through the hole C the brace 14 will lie flat against the backboard. A washer 16 and a nut 17 are placed on the-threads 13 and screwed up against the post, whereby the upper part of the goal is fastened.
'Ascrew 18 is passed through the eye15 and screwed into the backboard and post, whereby the lower end of the brace is fas tened. The two fastenings are ample and i hold the goal against displacement in any direction. The ring can not twist or sag. There are no braces in which the ball may lodge and there are no rough places to cut the cover.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
IVhat I claim is:
1. A goal device comprising a ring,'a. reinforced neck extending from and support ing the ring, a fastening shank extending from the neck and having screw threads for receiving a nut, and a brace depending from the neck at right angles to the shank and having an eye for receiving a fastening.
2. A goal device formed of a single piece of heavy gauge wire bent upon itself to form a rin andtwistedto provide a reinforced neck exteuding radially from the ring, one end of the .wire extending axially from the neck and forming a supporting shank, the other end of the wire being bent downward at right angles to the neck and constituting a brace. In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
DENNIS HOUSTON, I
