Description

Patented Mar. 3l, 1925;.
i MARGERY MAXON, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
'MAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
l 1,531,493 PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T OLEO J. LIEBER- HEEL PROTECTOR.
Application filed September To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGERY MAXON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, .and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel Protec-- tors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to no`vel improvements in heel protectors and has for its principal object the provision of anr improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the salient objects of the invention is the provision of a device of this character constructed in such manner that the same can be mounted to embrace the heel of the shoe to protect the heel from scratches and. deterioration when the feet. are used to manipulate the various brakes of a motor vehicle or the like. The device is not limited to any particular design of heel and from the following description it will be seen that r the protector can b e made in various shapes in accordance with the configuration of the heel with which it is to be associated.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Theinvention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Fig. 1, is a fragmentary side elevational view of a shoe showing the invention associated therewith;
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 3, is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4;, is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;-
Fig. 5, is a fragmentary view of the` heel showing a slightly modified form of construction embodying ythe protector; and,
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing showing the preferred form of construction, 10 indicates a shoe having a heel 11 provided with the usual lift or tread 12. The fragmentary view of the shoe as shown in the drawing is that of a ladys shoe with a high heel construction and I have found that in 22, 1923. serial No. A664,153.
that the surfaces of the heel or heels become badly scratched or otherwise damaged giving them a bad appearance and it is the object of the present invention to provide a device which can be mounted to embrace the heel or heels from damage.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing includes a body 13 preferably! formed of hard rubber or other elastic and pliable material adapted to withstand hard usage and wear. The body 13 has a portion 14 covering the outer surfaces of the heel and extending to the bottom of the heel just above the lift 12 as indicated at 15. Formed as an integral part of the body is a lip 16 adapted to cover the heel covering portion of the shoe as at 17, said lip being tapered downwardly toward the toe of the shoe and terminating into a ledge 18 adapted to snugly it'beneath the instep 19 as sho-wn. The body 13 has portions 20 covering the inside surface 21 of the heel and these portions 20 are split in a vertical line as at 22, the split extending across the ledge 18 as at 22. By providing a vertical split as shown, the body can be expanded to permit mountin the protector in place or to permit removaI'of the protector and as the material from which the body is formed is preferably of elastic material the body will have the tendencyto contract so as to securely hold itself in embracing position around the heel, such for example v as best shown ,in Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, showing a protecting said heel or heels Utl slightly modified form of construction.-
This construction includes'as a part of the device a fiat leaf spring 23 which is incorporated within the body as best shown in v Fig. 6` and the purpose o f'the spring is to serve as an auxiliary member to hold the body in embracing position about the heel.
While I have shown the device applied' to *a ladys shoe it is to be understood that the device can be constructed, without departing from the spirit of the invention, to be used or associated with mens shoes.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the llt) precise details of Construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modiications as como within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention lwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. Means for protecting a shoe heel from being scuffed comprising a body element of relatively hard rubber adapted to engage about the heel and having integral portions adapted to engage over the breast of the heel and also having an integral lip extension adapted to protect the upper portion of the heel where it rounds out lfrom the groove adjacent the heel, said lip extension continuing forwardly and downwardly to constitute ledge portions underneath the instep and thence continuing rearward and merging into said breast portions, said ledge portions being split in agreement with said breast portions, substantially as described.
2. Means for protecting a shoe heel from being scul'ed comprising a body element of relatively hard rubber adapted to `engage about the heel leaving the heel lift exposed, said body element having integral portions adapted to engage over the breast of the heel and also having an integral lip extension adapted to Vprotect the upper region of the heel where it rounds out from the groove adjacent the heel, said lip extension continuing forwardly and downwardly to constitute ledge portions underneath the instep and thence continuing rearward and merging into said breast portions, said ledge portions being split in substantial agreement with said breast portions, and resilient means incorporated 1n said body element for retaining it in embracing positlon about the heel, substantially as described;
In testimony whereof I'havesigned my name toV this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARGERY MAXON. Witnesses:
