To (zl/Z w'lzomfitmay concern:
Be it known that 1,, EUGENE BERN IiIG HAUS a citizen of the -United States, residing at Cincinnathin the county ofTiamllton and State o'f'Ohiofhave invented, certain new and useful Improvements in HeadrestApparatus, of which the following isla specif'r,
cation. v
My invention-relates toimprovements inf head-rest for "barber, surgical iandfsimilar' chairs. One of its objects is to provide; a more simple, reliable vand inexpensive ap paratus by-means of which the head-rest.
may be supported, and -readily conveniently adjusted With reference ;to the back of archair and satisfactorily 'applied'to the variety of uses for WlliClr itmay'jbe required:
Another object @is to provide a firmlrigidt reliable apparatus adapted Ito be j employed with confidenceto support the head during, the performance of operations upon theieye' or other po-rt-ions of the head. Another object is to provide an improvedfcombination of'head-rest supporting :a-nd adjusting apparatus. My invention also comprisescertain details of form conibinationtand arrangement, all of. which will be fully set forth in vthe description of the accompanying drawings, :in which: Y
Fig. 1,'-is a side elevation partly in section Fig. 2, -i-s as,planfof the head-rest shown in Fig. 1. j I p f ..Fig. 3, is a plan of/the upper slottedyadr justing member detached. 1 i
- Fi 4 is a plan of the middleslotted adjusting member detached.
t Fig. 5 is, a'bottom plan of the lower slotted Y adjusting member detached.
Fig.6 is persp'ectlve V ew of aguide-boh;
detached.
l The accompanying drawings illustrate the referred embodiment of my invention ,[in ,1
.- which represents theback of a chair as for instance the i djustabletback-of asur- V; gical, barber optometrlsts or similar chair..-
A plate 16 is rigidly attached to therear of said chair back and isfl pre'ferablyfprovided'with two perforated projections 17 and .18,*eacl1 provided With a-set-screvv '19, by means v rest may-be firmly wCl 'mPed to the chair back at two places if desired to afford a more of which theshank 20 of a head than usually firm and t-reliableaadjustable attachment of the head-rest shank to the chairback. I
At the upper-rend of the. shank 20 .is rigidly attached a slotted cross-bar ,or adjusting member 21 having a slot .22 longitudinally thereof. The slot 22 is preferably countersunk or recessed at its lower face to providecaguide-Way 24 to receive and act asla channel and guide Way for the head 25 of a bolt 26. Mounted above and resting upon the upper substantially plane face of the cross-bar 21 is a slotted adjusting member 27, which is slidably adjustable upon the cross-bar 21. The member 27is slotted at 23 atone end and provided with a pair of ears .28 to which the head-rest block .29 is pivotally attached by means of a pivot pin The adjustingmember 27 isalso promember 27 is :a slotted adjusting member 1 32, which is provided with a slot 33 and apairof ears-34at one end andrwith a slot 35 longitudinally thereof to register with g and lie vertically aboveithe slots 22and 31.
The slot 35 is shorter than the slot 31. A hand actuated guiding ,andclamping bolt 36 passes downwardly through a collar 37. and through the slots 35 and 31, and its lower end is threaded into the .extendeden d of the cross-bar 21. guide bolt 26 has za rectangular .head 25 which rests in and is t guided along theirecess The clamping and 24, which recessalso"prevents the head of the boltfronrbeing turned. The main section of theshank of the bolt .26 passes through, the :slots, 31 and, 35 .which slots \act as guides alongwhichthe shank ofsaid bolt 26 isiadjustable. The reduced end 3:8 ofethe bolt ;26.. is threaded and is vscrewed into a threadedtrecess 39 in theadjustingmember 32 until theshoulder 40 of thebolt 26 seats firmly against the underface ofimember 32. The length of the, main shank of bolt26 is such; as to hold the members 21, 27, and '32 against displacement relatively, and at the -same time to enable said members 21, '27,
and 32 to slide freely one upon the other.
Thecla nping bolt 36 acts siniilarlytnear the opposite ends of the slots 31 and '35 to hold the members 21, 27 and 32 in relative position and to guide saidmembers endwise of said slots 22, 31 and 35, and when the members 21, 27, and 32 have been adjusted to the desired relative positions, to at a single operation clamp all of said members rigidly to their adjusted position by tightening up on the bolt 36, to thereby hold the headrest to any position to whichit may have been adjusted.
The head-rest block 29 is provided with a yoke 42 to which yoke are attached a pair of upholstered head- rest pads 43 and 44, to directly contact with and support the head of a person occupying the chair. The head-rest block 29 is pivotally connected by meansot' a pivot pin 45 with one end of a link 46. The opposite end of said link 46 enters the slot in the end otthe adjust ing member 32 and is pivotally connected to member 32 by means 01" a pivot pin 47. Thus relative movement ofmembers 27 and 32will result inrocking the block 29 so as to direct the pads 43 and 44 either upwardly or downwardly. The extra length of slot 31 provides for such relative adjustment of members 27 and 3o. Also members 27 and 32 may beadjusted in unison forward and lmckwardly upon cross-bar 21 to retract or project the head-rest pads. Either or both of said adjustments may be effected at one operation.whenever the bolt 36 is loosened. The two bolts 26 and 36 hold the members 21, 2?, and 32 firmly in relative position one above the other and guide said members in their endwise adjustments, and serve to readily clamp and release said members as nia be required. The link connection between. the members 32and 29 facilitates positive adjustment of the pads 43 and 44 and a relatively wide range of adjustment of the pads for a smaller relative adjustment of the members 27 and 32.
The plate or bracket 16 is provided with two projections 17 in which are perforations 46 and 47 to receive the shank 20. Said perimrat ious 46 and 47 are in alignment vertically, and are beyond the face of the mid dlc portion of the bracket '16, so that when both of. the set screws 19 are tightened upon the shank 20 there is no tendency on the part of either of said set screws to distort or force the shank 20 out of alignment.
\Vhere the head-rest apparatus is to be employed as a support for the head during operations uponthe eye or for similar operations, it is important to insure a very strong and reliable support for the head rest. The plural spaced clamping action on the shank 20 also serves to better resist any strain put upon the clamping bolt 36 to readjust or clamp the head-rest.
The apparatus herein shown and described is capable of considerable modification Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
hat I claim is:
1. A head-rest apparatus comprising a shank, means to adjustably support said shank, a cross-bar mounted upon the upper end of said shank, and slotted longitudinally thereof, a pair of longitudinally slotted adjusting members mounted upon said crossbar one above the other, a clamping and guide bolt attached to the upper of said adjusting member and riding in the slot of the lower adjusting member and in the slot of said crossbar, a clamping and guide bolt threaded into said cross bar and riding in the slot of the upper adjusting member and in the slot of the lower adjusting member and adapted to be hand actuated to clamp said adjusting members to said cross bar at one operation, a head-rest member pivotally connected directly to' one of said adjusting members and indirectly through a link to the other of said adjusting-members.
2. A head-rest apparatus comprising a shank, means to adjustably support said shank, a cross-bar mounted upon the upper end of said shank, a pair of adjusting members mounted upon said cross-bar one above the other and adjustable e-ndwisc upon and relative to said crossbar and also relative to each other, means to guide said adjusting members endwise relative to said cross-bar and relativeto each other, means to hold said adjusting members near opposite ends in contact With said cross-bar and with each other face to face, means to rigidly clamp both of said adjusting members to said crossbar, a. head-rest memberpivotally attached to one of said adjusting members, and indirectly pivotally connected through a link with the opposite of said adjustin'g nr'em bers.
3. A head-rest apparatus comprising a shank, means to support said shank, acrossbar mounted upon the upper end of said shank, a pair of adjusting members mount ed upon said crossbar one above the other and adjustable endwisc upon and relative to said cross-bar and also rclati we to each other means to guide said adjusting members near opposite ends thereof endwise relative to said cross-bar and relative to each other, means to hold said adjusting members near opposite ends in contact with said cross-bar and with each other, means to rigidly clamp both of said adjusting members to said cross-bar at one operation, a head rest menrber directly pivotally attached to one of said adjusting members and a link pivotally connected at one end to said head-rest member and at its opposite end to the opposite of said adjusting members.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
