Description

March 24, 1.925. 1,531,067 v J. P. BROWN ET AL PRESSURE OIL PUMP FOR MOTORS OF FORD AUTOMOBILES Fi ed June 24. 1924 Patented Mar. 2 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
JAMES IE. BROWN AND FIDGE E. COVEY, OF FORT WORTH. TEXAS.
PRESSURE OI'L' TPUMP FOR- IVIOTORS OF FORD AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed June 24, 1924. Serial No. 722,006.
T 0 all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that we, Juries 1. BROWN and F roar. E. C(Wiii', citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure Oil Pumps for Motors of Ford Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an oilpump for the motors of motor vehicles; and more particularly to provide a pressure pump for lubricating motors by forcing the lubricant to the front of the motor so that it can flow backwardly and be splashed by the motor and the circulation kept up and to provide a pressure gage on the dashboard so that the oil pressure can be seen by the driver at all times. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claim. I
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this applica tion.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a motor provided with the improved pump. 2 is a front elevation of the motor. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the front cover of the motor removed and shown in an enlarged View. Fig. i is a detail view, showing the disk in the generator gear wheel for driving the pump. F 5 is a detail sectional view of the same gear wheel showing the driving shaft for the pump. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the pump which is used, being a pump of ordinary type. Fig. 7 is a front view of the pump with the cover casing removed.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
A motor 1 with a generator 2 is shown in the drawings and the generator 2 is provid ed with a gear wheel 3 which is driven from the cam gearing. A shaft 4 is provided for driving the pump from the generator gear 8. A disk 5 is driven in the cavity in the gear wheel 3 and made rigid therewith. The disk 5 has an opening 6 which is preferably square in crosssection to receive the end of the shaft 4 and the connection of the shaft 4 with the disk 5 is loose to permit a slight movement of one relative to the other. The
shaft 4: projects into the pump, going through the timing gear cover into the pump and the wheel 7 of the pump gearing has a square opening 8 to receive the shaft l. The generator gear wheel 3 thus drives the pump gearing. The pump 9 is attached to the cover plate 10 by bolts 11 and 12 which pass through the openings 13 of the cover plate. A pump gear wheel 15 meshes with the pump gear wheel 7 and is drivon'theroby. The pump is closed by a cover 14. The pump is provided with an intake pipe 16 and a discharge pipe 17. The pipe 16 is connected to i the oil reservoir in the bottom of the crank case. This pipe delivers the oil to the pump and the pump delivers the oil to the front of the motor. 'The wheel 3 and the shaft 4. thus drive the wheel 7 in the pump and creates the necessary pressure and the oil flows out through the pipe 17 back to the rear and this flow is kept up constantly and creates a circulation of the oil. The cover plate 10 is modified to form a flat surface for the packing' nut 18 and the pump 9.
A pipe 19 is connected with the pressure line and extended to the dash and provided with a pressure gage 20.
It is apparent that in motors that are not provided with generators or starters, a drive wheel may be provided in substantially the same position as the wheel 3 for driving the shaft 4 and be provided with the necessary bearings to be driven from the cam gear.
What we claim is In a motor provided with a generator and gear wheel therefor; a gear pump attached to the front of the motor, a disk rigid with JAMES P. BROWN. FIDGE E. cover.
