Be it known that lf, ALBERT All Knnnoee,
a resident of Kansas'City, in= they county" of Jackson4 and yState of Missouri, acitiz'en of 5 the UnitedStates, have invented certain new and useful- Improvementsl in Chemical Fire-Extinguishers, `of which the following isa' specification; 1
- My'inv'entionf relates to improvementsi-n chemical fire extinguishers particularly'c'onstr uctedf and adapted for"` service in' oiiice buildings, warehouses, apartments, vesselsV operate tof immediately extinguishvthe/fire without damage' to any'othe'r local-ity' thanv where the fire originates.v
26 Another object of my invention-is the provision ofa chemi'calfirevv extinguisher which will operate instantly to! extinguish the fire, and which `will insurethe proper mixture of chemicals with the Water to produce the most elicientl fire extinguishing flu-ida `Another object ofinventi'on isthe provi-si'on of achemical fire extinguisher which will be automatic, instant and practical in operation; which' will be lcomposed of compara-tively few part-s to insu-re simplicity, durability andi cheapness of construction; which' willv be coin-pactl and small in@ size to occupy a smal-l space;` and. which generally in every particular will be efficient, reliable f andpractical.`
'With these objects inv view, ymy invention consists of a chemical fire extinguisher' em` bodvlng novel features of construction and l com ination 'of parts, Substantiallyas-,dis-
of the apparatus which come within the scope of the claims.
tages and features ofv merit be appreciated,
I have shownin the accompanying` draw-l ings'a chemical 'fire extinguisher constructclosed herein',` it beingr'understood that any c changesv may be made 1n the construction.
Inf order that thev construction' indeta-il. and the .operation of my extinguisher may be fully understood and its@ many advaned according to: the best lprinciples I have so7 far devised', and in' said drawings: w
' Figure lrepresents` a complete fire-extinguisher embodying my invention shown in perspective. g f
ig 2'y representsr al vView partly perspective and partly broken v)away of the chemical tanks, valve mechanism and 'sup'- ofi' clearness the view beingenlarged.
Fig. 3) represents a;verticallongitudinal sectional view of the `chemical tanks, t'he supply container,$tlie valve mechanisml in said container, and the valve mechanism associatedV with said chemical tanks,y thevview beingy onf an enlarged'- vscale takenl on line supply container, and gearing and mecha- ,nisrnA operated-,in connection therewith,l and line 5-5 of Fig. 4. 4
ply Vcontainer of; my invention, for pur-'pose' Fig;I 4; represents' a; side elevation the chemical tanks, 'valver operating mechanism,4`
Referring bynumeralto the 'l drawings, ini
Fig. 5 represents a 'sectional view onf-the -which thevl safme numerals ofv reference are v used to denote similar parts inail/the views: The numeral Vl designa-tes a platform or base upon which the entiremechanism coniprising myfchem-ical firey extinguisher is'supported and which is of the desiredlvsize according to. the capacity of the machine, and upoir this base is) secured the motor 2,1 upon whose shaft 3l, is'mountedV a' drivin-g gear wheel 1.1,"whichI meshes with the large' gear vwheel 5on the shaft 6,; ofthe pump`.7, which isconnected wi-thfthe delivery pipeiS, which. directs the .mixed chemically charged liquid tothe pumpf forthe purposes-of discharging fires In use thel motor is connected? in circuit witlra sprinkling systemA vof any desi-'red character operated electrically, and instantly upon the fire occi'irring at anyplace in' the sprinikle'rsystem-l the 'circuit will be closed whichfwilfl* operate the motor fto drive f the pump andi force they extinguishing liquid through thefpifpe tothe proper4 point, as'will bereadilly understood.-
l Mounted' upon the 'base'r or' platform and in parallel relation'to the motor and. pum
is the-'supporting structure or' framework 9,v which rises froml the supplyta-nk or con- I tainer 10 which.A is of the desired size and' said charged lliquidffor extinguishing the is connected to the delivery pipe by means of the branch pipe 11, in which is located the rotary valveI 12, the operation of which Will presently appear, and arranged above the supply tank and supported upon the frame are the chemical containers 13 and branch pipes 16 and 1.6', thus in a manner to be described, feeding the chemical from the pair of tanks directly into the supply tank, Where it mixes with the Water therein to provide the chemical Huid for extinguishing the fire.
The discharge pipes or branches are provided, the pipe 16 with the couplings 17, iu which are seated the rotary valves 18, yWhile the pipe 16 is provided with seats 19, for the gate or slide valves 20, the valves being operated by a novel mechanism which I Will new describe.
The shaft of the motor carries a small gear Wheel 21, Which meshes with the gear Wheel 22, operating a train of gearing consisting of gear Wheel 23, which meshes and drives gear Wheel 24, which drives gear Wheel 25, all on the series of studs mounted in the inclined bar or frame 28, and the rotation of gear Wheel 25, meshing with gear Wheel 26, connected to pin 29, engaging slot 30, in pivoted lever 31, oscillates said lever, causing the upper slotted end 32 thereof, to engage the pin 33, carried by the depending arm 34, of the yoke 35, to reciprocate said yoke, in its guides 36, said yoke carrying lateral pins 37, Which move slotted arms 38, on the pair of rotary valves 18, to open one valve and close the other simultaneously, as shown in Fig. 3, and said yoke is further provided with vertical pins 39, which engage slotted levers 40, on the valves 20, to open one and close the other of said valves, the upper of said valves 20, being provided with aseries of arms 41, Which provide an agitator for assisting in the proper stirring or mixing ofthe chemical.
From thisconstruction it will. be noted that motion is transmitted from the gear Wheel on the motor shaft to thc train of gearing, and lliat the lever associated with said train of gearing is given a reciprocating or rocking action, the effect of which is to move the yoke back and forth in a horizon- ',tal direction and simultaneously open and close one rotary valve and one slide valve, of the chemical supply tanks, the purpose of which is to discharge at regular intervals the necessary and determined amount of chemicals into the Water of the supply tank,
which is provided with the inlet controlled by the oat valve 42, which permits the water to flow into the tank., and to automa ti cally operate the controlling valve of the inlet pipe, I provide the lever 43, which is connected to the valve at 44, and from which leads the rod or pitman 45, tothe pivoted lever 46, which is engaged upon the starting of the machine by the cam or eccentric 47, operated by the motor through the train of gearing, to immediately move the lever and open the valve to the position shown in dotted line.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the dravving, the operation of my invention will be so apparent that further elaboration thereof is deemed unnecessary, and it will be understood that the chemical tanks are properly charged with the most suitable chemical for the purpose, and that the supply tank which is in communication with said chemical tanks is supplied With the proper amount of Water, and that instantly upon the starting of the motor, the train of gearing is set in motion to operate the force pump and simultaneously the valve mechanism associated with the chemical tanks and supply tanks to insure the proper supply and mixture of the chemically charged fluid and the completion of the delivery of this fluid to the point Where the fire has started to instantly and automatically extinguish such fire. t
In the operation ofv my 'lire extinguisher the Water under service pressure is supplied to the inlet pipe 8 which leads to the Water supply tank 10 and the amount of Water in said tank is regulated by the float valve, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, to retainat all times the full amount of Water necessary for supply through the feed pipe 48, leading from the tank to the pump 7, and leading from the pump 7 is the discharge or outlet pipe 49, which pipe is preferably connected to the sprinkling system of any character, and instantly upon the starting of the motor the Water is pumped from the pump through the discharge or outlet pipe to the place Where the lire has started, as Will be clearly understood by reference to the drawings and description.
I claim:
