To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that l, Louis ESPITALLIER, a citizen of France residing at Jennings, in the parishof Jefferson Davis and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Candle Guard, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to candle guards, and more particularly to that type of guards which not only prevents the melted portion of the candle from running down the side thereof, but also keeps the candle from bending during hot weather or the like.

An object of this invention is to provide a candle guard which may be used on any type of candle stick or holder which will hold the candle in vertical position and at the same time prevent the melted portion of the candle surrounding the lighted wick from running down the side of the candle.

it. further object of this invention is to provide a candle guard which may be reinovably attached. to the candle holder, or even the base of the candle in the event the candle holder is so constructed as to make it impracticable to attach the guard thereto, and whose component parts are readily separated for cleaning or placing a new candle in the holder.

Bi still further object of this invention is to provide a guard with adjustable parts so that it may be adapted to fit any of the various types of candle sticks or holders in present use.

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be understood from, and in part be described in the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment the same being illustrated. in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing, and first to i to 3 inclusive l0 designates a candle stick or candle holdcn which may be of any desired shape or size, and which may be adapted to hold a single candle ll in a socket 12, or which may have a plurality of sockets l2 for holding a plurality of candles 11 therein. A base clamp 13 having outstanding lugs 14: which are secured to the clamp in substantially parallelism embraces the socket 152, and is removably held in adjusted position thereon by a screw 15 or the like. iln outstanding base arm 16 extends horizontally from the clamp 13, and a sleeve 17' is adapted to slide over the arm 16 and may be held in adjusted position by a set screw 1.8 or the like. A downwardly projecting lug 19 is attached to the sleeve 17 adjacent the inner end thereof, and is adapted to rest at its lower end upon the upper portion of the candle stick 10. The outer end of the sleeve 17 terminates in a second sleeve 20 which is secured at right angles to sleeve 17. The sleeve 20 is adapted to receive a guide rod 21 which is held in adjusted. position within the sleeve 20 by a thumb screw 22 or the like.

The follower or guard is adapted to move downwardly by gravitation along the guide rod 21 as the candle gets shorter, and to accomplish this a sleeve 23 slidably embraces the guide rod 21. The sleeve 23 has an outstanding sleeve or hollow arm 2% secured thereto at substantially right angles for receiving the outstanding arm 25 of the body member 26, which may be held in adjusted position in the sleeve 24; by a set screw 27 or the like. A. guard 28 is adapted to su stantially loosely embrace the candle 11, and has an upwardly curved arm 29 outstanding therefrom, the upper end of the arm 29 being received into an opening in the lower end of the body 26. In order to lock the guard 28 on to the body 26 a pin 30 is secured in the arm 29 and is adapted to fit into an angular opening 81 in the body 26. A downwardly flaring cap 32 loosely surmounts the upper end of the candle 11,

and has an opening 33 in the top thereof to permit the wick 01" the candle to extend therethrough and burn freely. A downwardly curved arm 34 is secured to the cap 32, and the lower end of the arm is received in a suitable opening in the upper end of the body 26. For securely holding the arm 34 within the body 26, a locking pin 35 is provided which is secured to the arm 3% and is received in an angular opening 36 in the upper end of the body 26.

The lower end of the cap 32 extends over the upper end of the candle 11, while the upper portion of the cap 32 rises slightly above the top of the candle 11 thus forming a chamber 37 between the top of the candle 11 and the inner side of the cap 32. The chamber 37 thus formed acts as a reservoir for the melted portion of the candle and prevents the material from flowing down the side of the candle as is the case with candles not having a guard of this type mounted thereon. 7

Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, wherein a modified form of the present invention is shown, the cap 32 and the guard 28 are constructed similarly to the cap and guard shown in Fig. l, and are similarly secured to the body 26. However, the outstanding arm 25 from the body 26 is secured to the guide rod 21 spaced downwardly from its upper end. The guide rod 21 slides through the sleeve 20, which in this instance is firmly secured to the arm 16 of the base clamp 13. This modified form is particularly adapted for use with smaller sized candles or candle holders, and of course may be constructed of much lighter material, tending to cheapen the manufacture of the candle guard.

It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction, design and materials comprising the above specifically described embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such chan es and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims:

1. A candle guard comprising a base adapted to be detachably secured to a candle holder, guide means secured to said base, a guide rod slidably mounted in said guide means, and guard means detachably secured to said guide rod.

2. A candle guard comprising a base adapted to be clamped to a candle holder, guide means adjustably secured to said base, a guide rod slidably mounted in said guide means, and a follower adjustably secured to said guide rod, said follower being adapted to surmount a candle at its upper end, and to slidably engage the candle intermediate the upper end thereof to hold the candle upright.

3. A candle guard comprising a base adapted to be clamped to a candle holder, guide means adjustably secured to said base, a guide rod adapted to slidably engage said guide means, and a follower guard adjustably secured to said guide rod, said follower comprising a cap adapted to surmount the candle and a guard adapted to substantially loosely embrace the candle intermediate the upper end thereof, said cap and guard. being detachably held in spaced relation to each other.

4-. A candle guard comprising a base adapted to be clamped to a candle holder, guide means secured to said base, a guide rod adapted to slidably engage said guide means, and a follower guard secured to said guide rod, said follower guard comprising a cap adapted to surmount the candli and to gravitate with the burning thereof, and a guard loosely embracing said candle intermediate the upper end thereof, said cap and guard being detachably held in spaced relation to each other.

5. A candle guard comprising a base, a

guide rod extending upwardly from said base, said guide rod being adjustubly secured to said base, and a follower guard adapted ot gravitate along said guide n'ieuns and to hold the candle in upright position, said follower guard having :uljustublc means for holding the guard concentric with said base.

6. A candle guard comprising a clamp, a horizontal arm extending outwardly from said clamp, a sleeve secured to the outer end of said horizontal arm, a tollower guard having a body portion, a guard for loosely holding the candle in upright position, said guard being removably secured to one end of said body portion, a cap mounted in the other end of said body portion and adapted to surmount the top of the candle, said cap having an opening in the top thereof for permitting the wick of the candle to extend therethrough and being adapted to hold the melted portion of the candle from running down the side thereof, and guide means scoured to said follower guard for holding said guard concentric with said base, said guide means being adapted to loosely lit in said sleeve so that said guide means may readily gravitate with said follower guard.
