Be it known that I, ConwILL JACKSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Tampin or Ballast1ng Machines, of which the fo lowing 1s a speclhcation.
This invention relates to improvements in tamping or ballasting machines.
The mam objects of this lnventlon are: First, to provide an improved tampmg or' ballasting machine which is of large ca acity.

The crosshead is provided with vibrating means which in the structure il lustrated consists of the shaft 16' having the unbalancing weights 17 thereon. This shaft is driven by the belt 18 from the pulley, 19 on the shaft 14 constituting the pivot for the crosshead. A-second pulley 20 is connected by the belt 21 to the motor.
The blades or tampers 22 are pivoted at 23 on the lower edge of the crosshead, the
. blades being arranged in coaeting pairs and their lower endsbeing outwardly directed or diverged asshown in Fig. I. My improved tamping machine is of large capacityand is very eflicient. I have illustrated an. embodiment of my improvements which isvery practical. I have not attempt ed to illustrate various modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will ena'ble'jthe embodiment or adaptations as may be desired.
Having thus described. myinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is: p
1. In a machine of the class described,
the combination of a truck adapted to travelupon the track to be ballasted, a swingin frame carried by said truck, a crosshea pivotally mounted on said frame, a vibrating means for said crosshead, tampers 20 balancin mounted on said crosshead and means for raising and lowerin said rame.
2. In a machine the class described, the combination of a truck adapted to travel upon the track to be ballasted, a vertically movable frame, a crosshead pivotall mounted on said frame, a vibrating mem r rota- 'tably mounted on said crosshead, tamdp ers mounted on said crosshead, means for iving said vibrating member, and means for raising and lowering said frame.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a truck adapted to travel upon the track to be ballasted, a swinging frame carried by said truck, means for on and provided with an unbalancin weight, tampers mounted on said crosshea and means for driving saidshaft.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a pivotally mounted crosshead, a vibrating meansifor said crosshead, and tampers mounted on said crosshead.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a vertically movable 3 crosshead, means for raising and lowerin said crosshead, a vibrating means for sai crosshead, and tampers pivotally mounted on said crosshead in coasting pairs, the ends of said tampers being laterally directed 4 whereby they tend to separate on contacting with the material to be tamped.
7. In a machine of the class described,
the combination of a vertically movable crosshead, means for raising and lowerin said crosshead, a vibrating means for sai crosshead, and tampers mounted on said crosshead.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, means for vibrating said head member, and tampers mounted on said head member in coacting pairs to receive the vlbrations thereof, the pairs of tampers being disposed to receive a rail of a railway track between them and being mounted so that they tend to separate upon coming into contact with the material tamped.
. 9. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, means for vibrating said head member, and tampers mounted on said head member in coactmg pairs to receive the vibrations thereof so that they tend to separate upon coming into contact with the material tam ed.
10. In a machine of the class ascribed, the combination of a head member means for vibrating said head member, and a pair of tampers pivotally mounted on said head member, the ends of said tampers being curved outwardly.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member means for vibrating said head member, and a pair of tampers mounted on said head member to receive the impact thereof and so that they tend to separate upon contacting with the material tamped. p
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, means for vibrating said head member, means for raising and lowering said head member, and
tampers pivotally mounted on said head member in downwardly diverging pairs to receive the vibrations thereof.
13. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, means for vibrating said head member, and tampers ivotally mounted on said head member in ownwardly diverging pairs to receive the vibrations thereo 14. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, tampers pivotally mountedon said head member in coacting pairs to pass between a pair. of adjacent ties, the ends of said tampers being disposed in diver ing relation, and means for vibrating sai head'member.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, tampers pivotall mounted on said head member back to bac the ends of said tampers be-' ing curved outwardly and having their faces of substantial width with longitudinal ribs at the lower edges thereof.
16. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a head member, tampers pivotally mounted on said head member in coacting pairs, the ends of said head members being outwardly directed so that they tend to separate on coming into engement with the material to be tamped, t e end faces of said tampers being of substantial area, and means for vibrating said head member.
