PICKER CHECK FOR LOOMS.
Application inea May To all 'whom t 72mg/ concern.'
Beit known that I, Mic/Hann LANDi, a sub ject of the King of Italy,'residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker Checks for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
In box looms the picker for the shuttle usually slides on a rod at the back of the framing in which the boxes are guided vertically and which forms a part of the rocking batten-including structure, and its inward movement is at present yieldingly checked by a buffer consisting of a leather strap which is folded zig-zag fashion and has its several folds penetrated by the rod. This butter is quite unsatisfactory for the purpose in hand because it soon increases in pliability upon being put into use and is also affected by atmospheric conditions, 'so that at different times it offers Widely varying degrees of resistance, which results in the blow of the picker being irregular in force and produces consequent irregularities in the woven goods.
The object of this invention is to provide an attachment for box looms for yicldingly checking the picking motion of the picking medium which shall oppose a substantially constant degree of resistance practically per-- manently and shall be simple 1n construction, readily attachable to any box loom, of enduring character, and capable of ready adjustment as circumstances may require.
In the drawing,
Fig. l shows the right-hand end portion of a loom in rear elevation and with my picker checking means attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is an outside elevation on a larger scale of said means and the picker stick; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of said means.
In the loom frame a is arranged to rock back and forth the usual structure including the batten b and the lay swords, only one of which is shown at c, d representing the shaft, j ournaled in the frame, carrying the lay swords; said structure also includes the framing c in which the shuttle boxes f slide, g being the rod which carries the boxes and forms a part of the means for reciprocating them vertically. h is the picker stick fulcrumed in a bracket z' projecting from the shaft d; it is normally held in the full line 192e. serial no. 639,051. l Y
position shown in Fig. l by the spring y', be-` ing adapted to have its picking strokes im- 'z ing and horizontal rod which is secured to the framing in parallel relation thereto, m being the picker which slides on' the rod and in the usual way has an opening through which the picker stick extends.
Bolted to the under side of the framing c near the lay .swords c is a bracket n which projects rearwardly clear of thei framing. This bracket has an arm o which projects downwardly `and outwardly from the lay sword at an incline, having at its free end a forwardly projecting boss p from which in turn projects a horizontal stud or pivot 29 which may be equipped with a cotter-pin g. Carried by the arm is a stop which consists of an elongated plate 1 arranged approximately horizontally and having its outer end s bent forward to form the stop proper. The
stop r is secured to the front face of the arm by a bolt t having a clamping nut u, the bolt penetrating a horizontal slot o in the stop, so that the latter may be adjusted horizontally. The bracket yn has upstanding therefrom at about the same pointfrom which the arm projects downwardly and outwardly an integral stop w which is bent outwardly and preferably has its free end face arranged at a downward and outward incline and equipped with an elastic buEer w.
Pivoted on the stud p, between the boss and the cotter pin, is a lever g/ upstanding from the pivot and having a forwardly projecting arm or lug e which preferably of movement of the picker stick h. The.
bracket lnf and the lever 'y have hooks n and y and these are connected by a spiral spring 2, which normally acts to hold the arm bearing against the stop proper s.
When the device is in use, each time the picking means h m is impelled inwardly or made to perform the picking stroke the picker stick 7L impinges against the rounded I face `a of theprojection a of lever y, the shoolibein'g'talien Lip by thespring e, which yieldingly resists the inward movement of the lever. lever is finally l definitely The inward' movement of -the limited by the ela?- ltic biier w, the @return movement of the picking means is assisted by the spring means 2 as the latter Contractsv upony the 1n'.-
ward movement of the lever g/ being cheeked.
y for'the `purpose in hand, permits the arm and Consequently the bracket as a lWhole to be light in construction and yet strong enough to resist breakage.
Another important feature oll invention `s the stop a which upon adjnstiient h'o'rizon'talljT varies the extent of throw of the lever to -the end that the .point of impact of Athe ,picking means ',.tlierewith 1may be set outward Orfinvvardin the path oit travel of said means.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new. and desire to seourefby Letters #Patent is In combination, with the hatten-including structure of a loom, a picking means movable therein inwardly and'"outwardly, a
bracketsecured vto said structure 'near lthe inward limit 'of motionv of's'aid lmeans and having an arm inclined downwardly and outwardly and a stop near the upper end 'of the arm, allever lulcrumed in the arm to 'move 1n a plane parallel with the path oi movement of said means against said stop 'and projecting upwardly from its itlerum intoith'e path ofsaid Emeans said bracket having near the lower end'o'lf the arm an-- other Stop against lwhich the lever is adapt- 'f ed to fbea'r lat an outward incline andA from which the lever 1s movable mwardlvlv and a spring extending` parallel and connected with the Iarm at -th'e lupper end thereof and with the levernear the lowverendoil thearnl and-normally holding thelever against the stop.
