To all whom it may con-cern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES NEWTON lVoons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Oan Opener, of which the tot lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a can opener, one ot its objects being to provide a simple form of device which, with one stroke, will cut out one end of a can, leaving the edges of the opening inturned so that the)v will not present rough jagged portions liable to injure the user of the can.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to operate and which can be adjusted for use in connection with cans of diiierent diameters. l
4 With the foregoing and otherl objects in view which appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the. combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it beingv understood that changes in t-he precise embodiment can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters ot reference l designates opposed arcuate plates preferably formed of this sheet ot steel. Each plate is provided with downwardly converging'. cutting edges 2 coming togetherto form a point 3. Extending yradially from Athe upper edge of each plate are stop plugs 4t() and projecting upwardly from the middle portion of each plate is an arm 5. One of these arms is extended laterally at its upper end to iorm a tongue 6 while the other arm 5 is` extended laterally and has inturned side portions 7 forming a channel 8 adapted to receive the tongue 6.
ln using this device the tongue G is adjusted within the channel 8 until the distance between the opposed arcuate plates l is slightly less than the diameter of the can to be opened. The points 3 are then placed against the end of the can. at diametrically. opposed points after which the entire device is pushed downwardly forcibly. This will drive the points 3 into the can and the upwardly diverging edges 2 of the platesv l willcut into the can and produce arcuate openings. In practice it is intended that the upper portion of the opposed plates j will be so that during the completion of the downward stroke of the can opener the opposed arcuate cuts formed thereby will come together, f thereby entirely separatingv 'the end ot the can from the wall thereof. The lugs 4t limit the movement of the opener into the can.
It will be lobvious that the device is very simple, durable and efficient and can be operated readily.l As the opener cuts the can during the downward stroke, the edges produced by the cut are turned inwardly so that there is no danger of injuring the user.
What is claimed is l. A can opener' including opposed ard cuate cutting plates, each having a point at i one end and cutting edges diverging from the point,'and an adjustable connect-ion bey tween the plates constituting a handle.
