BAR AND seem HEATING FURNACE.
= Application filed April l7, 192? Serial No. 632,753.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, GEORGE J. HAGAN, residing at Perrysville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a cit- 5 izen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Bar and Sheet Heating Furnaces, of which improvements the following is a specification.
with (Case A) a construction of furnace is claimed having independent or separate portions adapted respectively-for heating sheet bars and sheets combined with acombustion chamber from which the products tion, a constructionwherein the products of combustion flow from the combustion cham ber through the sheet heating chamber into the bar heating portion and thence to the stack. c
object a construction having independent sheet and bar heating portions and wherein "the products of combustion flow first through the bar heating portion to the sheet heating portion and thence to the stack. It is a further object of the invention toprovide' a combustion chamber for each of two bar heating chambers both of. which are connected to the sheet heating chamber and the latter connected to a stack. ,[The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a secimprovements claimed herein;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line I III, Figure 1; and
Figures 3 and 4 are views similar to Figures 1 and 2 illustratinga modification of the construction shown in Figures 1 and 2. The furnace in the construction shown in Figures 1 and 2 is provided with a bar heating chamber 1 and a sheet heating chamber 2, the bar heating chamber extending along one side of the sheet heating chamber and projecting at its rear end beyond the sheet heating chamber. The bar heat- In an application filed of even date herethe :bar heating chamber, said port being the sheet heating chamber are formed flues I 7 through the ports 8.
The invention described herein has for its and 4 a bar heating chamber 1 is arranged in'g chamber. It is preferredfto employ two tional plan View of a furnace embodying the them through the barheating chamber and atits opposite end with; asuitable'door 4L The front end of the sheet heating chamber is also provided with door v5. for charging and discharging sheets inp-ack's or in singles. In the rear of the sheet chamber and at one side of the extended end of the bar heating chamber is arranged a combustionich'ams- I ber '(i'which is connected'by a port/T with adjacentto'the rear or chargingend of said chamber. The front ends of the bar -and; sheet heating chambers are connected by" a flue or passage Sand in the rear wall 9 .ofi
10 connected at their lowerends with sheet heating chamber and at their upper ends with the stack. The flow of'products of a combustion from thebar heating chamber 1- to the sheet heating chamber is controlled by. a suitable damper which in the present case consists ,ofa movable tile lladapted to I regulate the flow of products of combustion In the constructlon shown in Figures '3.
on each side of the sheet heatingchamber 2 and the bar heating chambers are extended rearwardly beyondthe end of the sheetheat- I combustion chambers 6,'which in. the con- 7 struction shown are arranged in the rear of the sheet heating chamber and in'termediate the extended portions of the bar heating chambers. These combustion chambers are'connected respectively by port 7* to the bar heatingchambersj'at points adjacent to therear or charging ends of said chambers. The-bar heating chambers are connected at or near their front ends tothe sheet heating chamber by ports or passages 8 andsuitable dampers l1 areemployed for control lingthe flow of products of combustionifrom thebar heatingchambers to the sheet heating chamber. The-sheet heatingchamber is connected, ashereinbefore described, to the I stack by fines or passages l0 'formed in the I rear wall of the sheet heating. chamber. In, I this construction, provision" is made for heating the bar heating chambers by prod-. 05 ucts of combustion independently derived 1 r from independent combustion chambersin the, rear of the sheet heating-chamber. Asis well known.-1t requires a larger number of thermal units to heat the sheet bars jace-nt to its rearz endb 2. A furnace-having-in combination a sheet heating. chamber, bar hea-tlngucham'bers ex:-:
which vhave comparatively. small superficial area than is required to" heatthe sheets which have quite a large area and the construction shownherein provides for conditions when the temperature of the gaseous fuel passing through one bar heating chamber is not sufficiei'itly high to properly heat the sheets.
It will be understood that'although; means for the combustion of gaseous or liquid fuel isvshown in the drawings, any othen kinda of fuel. may be employed in; the combustion:
point adjacent to its rear. end and a-stack:
connected to the sheet; heatingflchamber: ad
chambers arranged'in the rear of the sheet heating chamber and connected respectively to the barheating chambersatjpoi'nts adj acent to the rear. ends thereof, and a stack connected to the sheet heating chamber adjacent t0ttl1e -rea1yend of thelatter.
3. A furnace having in combination a sheet heating chamber,v bar heating chain bers" connected'tofthe sheet 'heatingcl1an1-, berat points adjacentto the frontend of tl1.e latter,- inea'ns'for supplying heat to thebar he-ating cha-mbersat pointsiadjacent to the rear-ends of the latter, a stack connected tothe sheetheatin'g chamber at'a point ad:-
jacent' to therea r endwof thelatter, and-h dampers for controlling the-flow ofprod'ucts' of combustion"frome-the bar heatingqchanr bers to the sheet heating chamber.
Intestnnony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE 'J. .HAGAN.
