UNITED STATES 1 e T NT OF 6151;,
CARLTON r. Murrow, or warnanoo', Iowa.
WRENCH.
Application fi1e d April30,1924. Serial no. 71 ,127.
Be it known that I, CARLTON a. citizen of the'United States, residing at lVaterloo, in the county of. Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVrenehes, of which the following is a specification. I i This invention relates to wrenchesof the adjustable type. v v
A primary object of the invention is to provide a Wrench which will be self adjustable upon its application to ,a nut or other object.
Another object is to provide a wrench having adjustable slidable spring pressed jaw plates having rods extending therefrom and movably associated within alternately arranged bores formed in the wrench body,
' whereby each plate is movable without interference from its companion plate, and permits the employment of a larger number of plates in a given area than ordinarily possible without unnecessarily weakening the body member, as it will be obvious in the ordinary construction where-the same number of plates are employed, the bores would necessarily have to be much closer to each other which would physically weaken the wrench as will be readily apparent.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and speciti-,
cally' pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying.
Figure 6 is a sectlonal view taken on line 66 of Figure 5. j v
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 1 indicates the handle of the wrench which tapers from the stationary F. lVIUNonY,
of the j jaws 2 and 3. The handle from-the inner a terminal of the jaws is 'prov ide d with a re cess3 and from the inner: wallofthe recess a pluralityof bores 4: are formed which terminate ata point midway the ends thereof. The bores 4 slidablyreceive the'innenextremities of the rods'b 'which will be presently described,"v
Arrangedbetween th'e; jaws 2 and 3 are a plurality of plates 6jslott'ed'longitudi- I nally adjacent theinner ends thereof as at 5 and each being. further provided with a recess 6 longitudinally formed adjacent one side wall thereof, as clearly disclosed in Figure 5 of the drawings? v 1 Surrounding the rods 5 and arranged within the recess of the handle are coil springs 7 having their inner convolutions engaging the rear wall of the recess adj acent the marginal edge of the bores 4:, the inner H .wall of the other recess 3"providihg acon-' tacting shoulder 7 therefor. The rods 5 pro j ecting from the inner endsofthejaw plates 6 and as will be, readily apparent the jaw i plates are capable of rearward movement but the springs tend to urge 'themto their outermost position as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings.
i "It Should be noted that the bores fil are I alternately arranged as disclosed in Figure 4c, "so that the springs may have adequate space for movement thereof and the recess 6 of the plates'are provided to receive thev springs when the plates are in operative position and by'this construction it'is obvious that each plate is movable without inter ference-from its companion plate} A kerfed headed bolt 8 passes through the jaws Qand 3 and receives .the jaw plates through the medium of the slots formed therein; This bolt not only strengthens the structure but prevents lateral displacement of the jaw plates." Y
The operation of theinvention may be brieflydescribed as follows:
The wrench is applied to a nut of less size" than the space betweenhthejaws 2 and 3, some of thejaw plates (i coming in contact with'the nut will moverearwardly. against 5 '1 the tension'of the springs 7, to move the,
rods inthe bores ,4, until the outer endof the slots come incontact with the-bolt 8 and theplates, not engaged by the nut. will'remain in normal position withthe adjacent plates inengagement with the sides of the nut to allow the maximum amount of strength thereof It to be exercised! thereupon.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be' readilvv apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construetion and in the combination and arrangement of the several I parts, "provided that such changes 'fall within the scope of the appended claim.
[claim as new -1s I i A wrench of the character described co prlsing a handle, spaced stationary "jaws 'Having thus described my invention; what formed thereon, said handle -bein'g recessed from the inner" ends of the j aw and from the inner-endof th'e recess -isprov ided with alternately arrangedbores,#jaw plates normally arranged in contacting engagement between the jaws, and provided With longitudinallydisposed slots, a rod inwardly extending from each jaw plate and each rod having its free end mounted for slidable movement in the ad acent bore, sprlngs surrounding t-he rods and engaging the inner end of the recess and adapted to fo ree the plates to normal position, *a bolt 'rrg dl-y *se cured between -the fixed jaw and passing through the "slots provided in the aw1 plates, constituting guiding means forsaid q-aw plates andsaid-jaw plates being provided with 'groovesto accommodate the outerends of the spring when the-jaw-plates are moved to operative position.
In testimony whereof I my slgnature. I I r V i CARLTON 'F. "MUNGEY.
