PIPE-CUTTING IMPLEMENT.

Be it known that I, PAUL H. LniroLD a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and 'use-- ful Improvements in a Pipe-Cutting Implement, of which the following is aspecitication.
This invention relates to pipe cutting implements, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of the device.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the cutting elements are renewable without discarding the remaining parts of the implement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means for adjusting the pipe engaging jaws. to operate on pipes of varying sizes.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure l is a side elevation, and

The improved implement is designed more particularly for severing lead piping and like relatively soft materials, and comprises coacting body portions 10-11 pivotally united.
One of the body members, for instance the member 10, is formed with a transverse slot with enlarged ends 25 and 26 and a contracted central portion 27, as shown more clearly in Figure 7, while the member 11 is formed with an aperture to receive a clamp bolt 13, the body of the bolt engaging the aperture in the member l1 and formed with an enlargement 28 to engage alternately in the enlargements of the slot. A clamp nut 14 is applied to the bolt, as shown, the object to be hereinafter explained.
The confrontingfaces of the body vportions 10 and 11 are preferably reversely curved as shown, and bearing respectively upon the body portions are cutting blades 17 and 18 with their confronting edges reversely curved and knife'edged. Intermediate the ends of blade 17 is a knifeedged cavity 19, while a similar knife edged cavity 20 is formed in the. blade 18.
The confronting faces of the body members in advance of the pivot 13, are recessed to receive the cutting blades 17 and 18, the inner end of the recesses forming stop shoulders against which the inner ends of the blades bear and are thereby effectually supported from displacement longitudinally of the body members.
Bearing upon the blade 17 is a holding plate 21, while a similar holding plate 22 bears upon the blade 18.
As shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the inner ends of the holding members 21 and 22 overlap the adjacent parts of the body members, and thus protect them, and supplement the holding force of the stop shoulc ers.
The three parts 10-17 and 21 are coupled by clamp screws 23, while the three parts 11, 18 and 22 are coupled by like clamp screws 24. By this means the cutting blades are firmly supported in position for use, but may be readily detached for renewal.
In operating with the improved implement, the cutting blades 17 and 18 are disposed upon opposite sides of the pipe to be severed, and pressure applied to the hand grips 15 and 16 and rotary or oscillatory motion imparted to the implement to cause the knife edges of the blades to cut into the pipe, the recesses 19 and 2O serving as teeth to increase thel efficiency of the cutting action.
The blades operating equally from opposite sides of the pipe sever the pipe uniformly and without reducing the size of the pipe or distorting it in any manner, leaving a square uniform end to the pipe.
