WATER-COOLING ATTACHMENT FOR- AUTOMOBILE RADIATOR/SAND THE LIKE.
Application filed January 3, 19221 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jon WINKLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Water-Cooling Attachment for Automobile Radiators and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a novel construction of an appliance adapted to be readily attached to any conventional type of automobile radiator or radiator cap for the purpose of increasing the efficiency or cooling capacity of the system, means being provided for introducing the atmospheric air into suitable channels or conduits, open at their front and closed at their rear and front bottom portions, and contained in a frame or body constituting the air collecting device, which is carried by or secured upon a radiator cap of any conventional type, whereby a plurality of the air currents are collected and concentrated or discharged into one common discharge outlet and caused to travel downwardly through a pendant air tube into the water chamber of the radiator through ports in said pendant air tube or pipe, provision being further made for enabling the height of the water in the radiator at all times to be readily ascertained.
It further consists of a novel manner of securing and locking the pendant air tube in the radiator cap, the upper portion of said tube being threaded so as to provide a ready means for connecting the air collecting device thereto.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my inven tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since it will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the'drawings,
1 designates the radiator of an automobile or other engine and 2 the cap or closure therefor, to which my novel cooling device is applied.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a radiator cap cut with a hole in it and insert therethrough the pendant air pipe or tube 3 having its upper end 4 threaded and its lower end provided with the air exit ports 5, which communicate with the upper portion of the radiator chamber, said tube being secured in position in the radiator cap by the upper and lower lock nuts '6 and 7.
8 designates the air receiving and collecting device which comprises a frame which is open in its centre forming a chamber which is annular, horeshoeor other shape and is provided with the open air receiving chan nels or conduits 9 preferably composed of two conduits which are open at their front and closed at their rear and bottom front portions and discharge downwardly into the central common conduit or passage 10 and thence into the pendant air receiving tube 3, said passage 10 being interiorly threaded and screwed upon the threaded upper portion 41 of the tube 3.
11 designates a float positioned in the tube 3 to rest on the water in the radiator, it having connected with it the rod or stem 13 which projects upwardly therefrom through the hole 13 of the wall 14, said rod terminating in the head 15 which acts as a stop when it reaches the wall 141 to limit the descent of the rod 12 and the float 11. The upper end of the rod or stem 12 is visible in the central space of the airoollecting frame 8 where it serves as a tell-tale of the condition of the water in the radiator due to the action of It will be apparent that in carrying out my invention, it is only necessary to employ a cap for the radiator having therein an opening and inserted therethrough the air conveying tube 3, it being securely held in position with respect'thereto by the lock-nuts 6 and 7. The frame 8 which contains the air collecting channels, passages or conduits is then screwed upon-the upper threaded end of the air pipe or tube 3, so that the parts'when in *asse'mblediposition appear as seen in Figures 1 and 4, and by making the air collecting device in the shape-of horseshoe or the like, a pleasing and ornamental effect is obtained 'atthe'top'of the radiator.
