UNIT-'ED STES JOHN. c. BOWERS, on Nonwamavramn COMBINATION TOOL.
Application ledvApril 5 To all whom 'it may concern.'
Beit known that-I, JOHNC.'Bown1zs,la,l citizen of the United States, residingat Norway, Maine, yhave invented new and useful Improvements in CombinationaTools, of which the following is a specification.-
The present invention relates to improvements in combination tools, and has for. its Y' general vobject the -provision ofa `unitary ments of a recognizedutility p More specifically the:5 obj ect vof vmyffinvention is to provide afdevice offtheifafo'resaidcharacter which mayfk beiy `economically pro- 'duced and is l'so-designed asrto'permit of the employment of `the various elements-offA which it is composech` fortheaspecilic purr poses for whichv said-elementsnare devised, :f with the greatest ease and facility. The sevf eral/elements of thedevice are compactlyassembled so that it maybe carriedfin ithe pocket of theuser A.without discomfort orwithout possibility of damage:V to .e ,the1-y clothing.v
My invention further contemplates anfassemblage of Ha plurality` of :utilita-ri an-- ele ments in association with a supporting-@medium which may function: as a handle lor" grip vin the manipulationoflthevarious ele-f1 ,ments and will yprovide a Vmeans ffori oarrying keys or other implements-.whichare cus-11 tomarily held onf-a suitablen retainer, l,when

For the purposes of:y the 'present disclosure, I have electedsto illustrate andsde- Y `of the framefSis slightly shorter tlianf the scribe the preferred: embodiment of Amy in vent-ion, but it will be obviousthatvmyvinvention may take other vformsandthatwdif= ferent utilitarian elementsV maybersubstidi tuted for those shownv without departing from the spirit and scopeof lily-invention; l

This pin 14, it will be noted, carries an element 16, which is freely rotatable thereon, the free end of said pin being threaded to receive a securing nut or the like 17. n
In the present embodiment of my invention the aforesaid element 16 comprises a corkscrew 18, nail file 19, finger-nail cleaner Q0 of the usual configuration, and an implement corresponding to the usual so-called strip can-key opener, which is formed by the provision of a siot 21 between said iinger-nail cleaner 20 and the cooperating extension 22, which terminates inwardly of the linger-nail cleaner 20. The said extension 22 is preferably formed with a rounded or curved surface at its extremity, and by spacing it inwardly of the end of the finger-nail cleaner 20 serves to some extent as a guard or stop to prevent the entrance of the relatively sharp end of the latter implementiinto the cloth of the pocket, when my device is thus carried. Y
The body ortion 23 of the element 16 is preferably of round stock and the opposed faces of the extensions 9 and 10 of the frame 8 are grooved or recessed to conform to the the frame so that an unobstructed passage' contour thereof, so that when said extensions are in engagement with said body portion of the element 16 and locked in position by means of a nut or the like 17, the said eiement 16 will be rigidly held against movement with relation to the frame 8 and for all practical purposes will be, in effect, an integral part thereof.
As will be clearly apparent Vfrom Fig. 1
of the drawings, the end of the extension 9.
of the frame 8 is formed `with an open slotv 2-1 within which the threaded end of the transverse pin 14 is passed when the element 16 is supported within the frame of the device. Obviously, by unscrewing the nut 17, the pressure of the extensions 8 and 9Vupon the body portion 23 of the element 16 will be relieved and the said element may be rotated on the pin 14 until it assumes a position at right angles to the frame, as shown in F igs. 3 to 5 inclusive. When the element 16 has been rotated to this position, the pin 14 may be disengaged from the slot 24 and moved in an arc on its pivot 15 to the position shown in Fig. 5,'that is, outwardly of is provided between the frame extensions 9 and 1() to permit of the placing of keys or other objects on the said frame 8, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
In the normal employment of my device. the element 16 is locked in position within the extensions of the frame, so that the point of the corkscrew 18 will abut against the head of the frame and will, thereby, be prevented` from coming into accidental engagevment with the fabric of the pocket, if the device is being carried in that manner.
linel as a t ull or o'rin for said element.
lhe element 16 will preferably be retained in the position shown in Fig. 11 in those cases where Vit is desired to employ the nail file 19, they linger-nail cleaner 20, or the strip rcan opener 21, while thebottle-cap remover 12 maybe manipulated without respect to the,
position of the element 16, the nib 12a thereof cooperating with the contiguous portion ofthe frame of the device in the functioning of the implement. f
The securing nut 17 may be of any desired shape, but I have found it preferable to provide it with a convex surface 17a at its inner end for engagement with the extension 9 which, if'desired, may be formed with a suitable seat to add to the security of the locking effect of said nut. ,n A
From the forewoing description of my invention it will be evident that l have devised a combination tool which possesses great utility and one in which the various elements may be brought into effective position, with relation to the supporting frame, with a minimum of effort. Furthermore, it will be noted that I have made provision for adejquately protecting the fabric of the pocket againstr injury by the pointed ends of the vseveral implements, when the device is so carried, in a manner which does not in any way detract from the effectiveness of the implements when in use.
lVhat` is claimed is:
1. A combination tool having a frame formed with spaced terminals, an element rotatably supported from one of said terminals, means for locking said element in frictional engagement with both of said terminals to close the space therebetween, and means whereby the said element may be disengaged from said terminals and moved to a 'position with relation thereto to permit of said pin for looking said element in fricq tional engagementwith said extensions.
3. A combination tool having a frame formed to provide two parallel members, a pin pivotally connected to one of said members, an element embodying ay plurality of implements rotatably mounted on said pin, and means associated with said pin for looking said element in frietional engagement with said members.
4. A combination tool having a frame adapted for use as a key-ring or the like, said frame terminating in spaced extensions, a pin pivotally mounted on one of said extensions, an element embodying a plurality of useful implements carried by said pin and adapted for disposition Within the space between said extensions, and means eooperat ing Witli said pin and one of said extensions for looking said element in friotional engagement with both of said extensions, said element being capable of movement with relation to said frame to provide an unobstructed passage between said extensions whereby keys or the like lmay be mounted on said frame.
