KNIFE ATTACHMENT FOR PISTOLS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WIsNIEwsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Attachments for Pistols, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates generally to pistols, having more particular reference to an attachment for a pistol, the attachment comprising a knife blade that is normally contained in a sheath under the barrel of the pistol and which may be projected forward for use when desired.

The invention has for an object to provide a knife attachment for a pistol, a further object relating to the mounting of the knife in a manner to facilitate its projection to operative position when desired.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 of the drawing is a side view of a pistol having my improved attachment mounted thereon, certain parts being shown in longitudinal section.

In the drawing the reference numeral 10 is used to indicate in general the barrel of an ordinary type of automatic pistol, the butt or handle being indicated at 11. According to my invention I attach, by means of rivets or otherwise, to the bottom of the barrel a channeled member 141 that extends along the barrel and forms a sheath for the knife, this member being here shown as formed with an arcuate top part that fits against the underside of the barrel. Within this sheath is slidably mounted a knife blade 15 that may be of ordinary shape or outline, being here shown as having a thickened rib 15 extending along the back edge thereof which engages in a complementary guide portion of the sheath 14 to guide the knife in its longitudinal movement between operative and inoperative positions.

Pivoted between its ends as at 22 in the sheath, behind the latch 20 is a double armed resilient member 23 that bears at its upper end on the rear end of the knife and at its lower end on the latch acting to urge both of said parts in a forward direction, and thereby holding the hook 19 engaged with the tooth 18 as will be apparent. Projecting downwardly from the knife, a short distance from the rear end thereof, is a finger piece 24 that may be grasped when the knife is to be retracted into the sheath. 1

To assist in guiding the knife, and to limit the forward movement thereof, each wall of the member 14 is formed with a longitudinal slot 26 and in these slots engage the ends of a transverse'pin 27 fixed to the knife near the rear end thereof. To look the knife in its forward position I provide, in a recess 28 in the knife, a detent arm 29 that is fulcrumed between its ends as at 30 and whose rear end is adapted to engage in a notch 31 in the top of the member 14:, a spring 32 urging this rear end of the arm upward. To release this arm 29 from looking position a pin 33 is slidably mounted in the knife and projects from the finger piece 24 and has its inner end adjacent the forward end of the arm.

In the drawing. I have shown the knife in retracted position with the hook 19 on the latch 20 engaging the tooth 18 on the knife. When the knife is to be projected forward the latch 20 is pressed rearwardly, to withdraw the hook from the tooth. At the same time and by this action, the spring member 23 is tensioned, so that its upper end bears with increased force on the knife so that when the hook rides off the tooth the pressure of the member 23 will be sufficient to project the knife to forward position, where it is locked by the engagement of the rear end of the detent arm 29 in the notch 31.

Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. In a pistol, a channeled knife sheath attached to the barrel of the pistol, a knife slidably mounted in said sheath, a latch pivoted to said sheath and engaging said knife to hold the same retracted, and a common spring element acting to hold said latch engaged with the knife and, to throw the latter forward whenthe latch is,rele,ased.
