Description
A I I Patented Mar. 10, 1925 HEINRICH ZOEIQIIY, or ZURICH, SWITZERLAND.
STEAM-DRIVEN VEHICLE.
Application filed November 13, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH ZOELLY, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Zurich, Switzerland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in SteamI)riven Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Steam driven vehicles, working with condensation and in. which the cooling water utilized in the condenser is re-cooled in a separate device by means of a current of air, have the objection that the air leaving the re-cooling device is saturated with steam whereby mist (steam clouds) are formed at normal weather and temperature conditions. The observation of signals and of the track from locomotives especially when the latter travel reversely is obstructed by these steam clouds. In order to overcome this objection, and according to the Dresent invention the air leaving the re-cooling device, saturated with steam, and tending to form steam clouds or mist, is mixed with hot combustion or furnace gases before it reaches the atmosphere. Consequently a drying of the exhaust air takes place. At the same time the further advantages are obtained that the sparks contained in the smoke or furnace gases are very efficiently cooled and extinguished by the exhaust air, and the generation of smoke is diminished. l Vith a steam driven vehicle for carrying out the method according to the present invention a fan for the furnace delivers hot furnace gases to the exhaust end of the re-cooling device where they are mixed with the exhaust air of the latter.
Two constructional examples of steam driven vehicles for carrying into effect the novel method are illustrated on the accompanying drawing, in which:
.Fig. 1 shows partly in a side elevation and partly in a longitudinal section a steamturbine driven locomotive having a re-cooling device for the cooling water utilized in the condenser arranged at the rear of thelocomotive,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the furnace gases are introduced into the re-cooling device in front of the fan for the cooling air.
Fig. 4: shows in a horizontal section a detail modification.
Fig. 5 is a section of the tube 13.

the turbine 2. At the front end of the locomotive a furnace fan 3 driven by an auxiliary steam power engine 4 is provided, which fan causes the furnace or combustion gases to flow through the locomotive in the manner indicated by the arrows At the rear of the locomotive a re-cooling device 6 for the cooling water utilized in the con.- denser C is arranged, the water to be recooled falling through special re-cooling contrivances in the direction of the arrows 7 whereby it gets into contact with the cooling air flowing in the direction of the arrows 8. The cooling air is drawn through the re-cooling device 6 by means of a fan 9 and is discharged into an exhaust conduit 10. The fan 9 is driven by a power engine 16. In the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 1-2 the fan 3 discharges into two conduits 1.1, 12 arranged at both sides of the locomotive 1 and extending back to the exhaust channel 10 to which the conduits 11, 12 are connected by the nozzle pipes 13 Fig. 5 of the pipes 15. 14 denotes the exhaust opening of the re-cooling device 6. With the arrangement illustrated in Figs. l2 the furnace gases drawn by the fan 3 from the smoke box are forced by this fan into the conduits 11, 12 from which they flow through the passages 13 into the exhaust channel 10 and effect a drying of the air saturated with water and forced into the channel 10 by the fan 9.
In some cases it is suflicient if only a por tion of the furnace gases is mixed with the exhaust air from the re-cooling device. The object of the present invention is also attained if the furnace gases or at least; a portion thereof is mixed with the air passing the fan 9 before the air enters this fan instead of after it has passed through the fan.
An arrangement of the last mentioned type is illustrated in Fig. 3. In this arrangement the furnace gases forced by the furnace fan 3 into a conduit 17 mix with the exhaust air from the re-cooling device 6 in a chamber 18 in front of the fan 9 for the cooling air which fan is driven by the power engine 16. Instead of the conduit 17 ending directly in the chamber 18, it may join, as shown in Fig. 4, to an annular chamber 19 which is connected to thechamiber 18 by means of nozzle-shaped passages 20.
I claim:
1. In a steam-driven vehicle, the combination of a boiler having a furnace, a fan arranged to induce the flow of the furnace gases, a steam-power engine for driving the vehicle, a condenser for said engine, a recooling device for re-cooling the cooling Water utilized in the condenser, and means operatively connected to said furnace fan to conduct furnace gases to the exhaust end of said re-cooling device.
2. In a steam-driven vehicle, the combination of a boiler having a furnace, a fan to induce the How of the furnace gases, a steam power engine for driving the vehicle, a con denser for said engine, a separate re-cooling device for re-coo-ling the cooling Water utilized in the condenser, a fan to cause the flow of cooling air through the re-cooling device and to discharge. said cooling air at the exhaust end of said device into the atmosphere, and means to conduct furnace gases to a point lying behind the fan for the cooling air for mixing the latter with the furnace gases.
3. In a steam-driven vehicle, the combination of a boiler having a furnace, a fan to induce the flow of the furnace gases, a steam power engine for driving the vehicle, a condenser for said engine, a separate re-cooling device for i e-cooling the cooling ater utilized in the condenser, a fan to cause the flow of cooling air through the re-cooling device and to discharge said cooling air at the exhaust end of said device intothe atmosphere, and a conduit for connecting the discharge of said furnace fanto the exhaust end of said re-cooling device at a point lying behind the fan for the cooling air.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HEINRICH ZOELLY.
