Description

Mmh 1o, 19,25. Lszmls E. F. KELLY SMOKE RTNG BLOWER Filed Aug. l, 1921 Patented Mar. 1o, 1925.
Prem ori-fics- EDWARD FRANCIS KELLY, or sfr. LoUIs, MISSOURI.
SMOKE-RING BLOWER.
Application led August 1, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Smoke-Ring Blower, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a novel means for blowing rings of tobacco smoke, and to provide a novel process for blowing such rings.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
I do not bind myself` to the specific forms shown in the drawings since, within the scope of what is claimed, a mechanic may make many changes in the forms shown, without departing from the spirit of the invention or avoiding the charge of infringement.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section one Aform of a device embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a longitudinal section showing a modiication; Figure l1 is a longitudinal section showing a further modification; Figure 5 is a longitudinal section of the form shown in Figure 1, diagrammatic in nature, and illustrating the operation of the device.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a cylindrical or tubular body 1 provided in one end with a reduced circular opening 2, which may be located in a reduced mouth piece 3.
In practical operation, the opening 2 is placed to the mouth of the smoker. The smoker then exhales gently, and substantially fills the body member 1 with smoke. The breath is then withheld. The operator then inhales slightly, and gives a light. sharp outward puit, the intake and the puff being practically one operation. As a result, `a ring of smoke emerges from the wider end of the body 1.
When the smoker inhales, there is a movement of air into the body 1, at the axis thereof, as indicated at 5 in Figure 5, by the arrows 4, this movement taking place Serial No. 488,871..
at the axis of the body 1, because the opening 2 is reduced iny diameter, the condensation of the air and smoke occurring at the axis of the body 1. This inhaling operation and the consequent inward movement and condensation, indicated at 5 causes the outer portion of the smokev in the member 1 to' whirl, as indicated bythe arrows 6, the ring being formed, and the ring being being expelled by the outward puff.
Due to atmospheric or other conditions, it may be desirable to increase or diminish the length of the tubular body. Under such circumstances, the body comprises a main member 7 and a sleeve 8 slidable thereon, the member 7, having a reduced inlet opening 9 which may be formed in a `reduced mouth piece 10, it being immaterial, to some extent, whether or not the mouth piece is reduced as indicated at 10 and at 3, the reduction of the mouth piece` however, 4facilitating the insertion of the device into the mouth of theoperator. The article may take the form of a pipe 11 including a c vlindrical bore 12 and a reduced inlet 14. The opening 14 may communicate with the bore 15` ot a stem 16, the bore 12 being located in a howl 17 carried by the stem 16.
The 'forms shown in Figures 3 and 4. are operated, preferably, as set forth in connection with the form depicted in Figures 1 and 2.
What is claimed isz- A device of the class described, comprising a tubular body provided with a bore including a cylindrical portion of a common diameter from end to end, and extended inwardly 'I'rom one end of the body throughout the major portion of the length of the body, the body being supplied in its opposite end with a circular opening of less diameterthan the cylindrical portion of the bore, the bore including a tapered portion. the smaller end of which is of the same diameter as the opening, the larger end of which is of the same diameter' as the cylindrical portion of the bore, the larger end of the taper portion communicating directly with the cylindrical portion of the bore, and the smaller end of the tapered portion communicating directly with the opening; and a sleeve having a cylindrical bore of common diameter from end to end, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as;
the rst speoed end of the body being my own, I have hereto affixed lnysgnature l received Sldably in the inner end of the ill the PIQSGDCG 0f jGWO WIleSSeS.
