Description

Mar. 3. 1925.
L. C. HOUSE CLEAN ou'r .ELBOW Filed J'une 9, 1924 www zoo I Patented Mar.` 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. f
LUTHER C. HOUSE, 0F VIOLA, IOWA, ASSIGNOB. OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM F. STRAW- MAN, OF ANAMOSA, IOWA.
Application filed June 9,
T 0 all whom may concern.'
Be it known that I, LUTHER C. HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Viola, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clean-Out Elbows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' My invention relates to improvements in Stove pipe elbows and has reference more particularly to elbows having a removable closure giving access to the interior thereof and to the horizontal pipe connected with the elbow, for cleaning soot therefrom. In devices of this character, it is practically impossible to scrape out the soot without causing it to descend down the vertical portion of the elbow and the vertical pipe with which it connects, into the stove, below. It is the object of my invention however to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive construction for closing communication between the horizontal and vertical parts of the elbow when the former is to be cleaned.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an elbow constructed in accordance with my invention, showing it in operative condition.
Figure 2 iS a vertical sectional view illustrating the manner in which an inner sleeve of the device is set when the elbow is to be cleanedof its accumulation of soot.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral l designates va horizontally elongated tubular head having one end adapted for connection with a horizontal stove pipe 2 or with the thimble of a chimney as occasion may demand. The lower side of the head l is formed with an opening 3 from which a tubular shank 4 extends downwardly, said shank being adaptcLEAN-oo'r ELBOW.
1924. sera1 No. 718,986.
ed either for connection with a vertical stove pipe 5 or directly with a Smoke outlet from a stove. The outer end of the head l is closed by a removable friction cap 7 which. is preferably provided with a handle 8 by means of which it may be readily removed or applied.
W'ithin the head l, is a rotatable sleeve 9 having an opening 10 in its lower Side, normally registering with the opening 8 So as to permit the free passage of smoke through the elbow. This sleeve however is provided with a transverse bail or handle 11 extending across its interior near its out-er end. When the cap 7 is removed, the handle 11 may be grasped to rotate the sleeve 9 from the position of Fig. l to that disclosed in Fig. 2, causing said sleeve to close the opening 3. Thus, any accumulation of soot in the upper portion of the elbow or in the horizontalpipe 2 or the adjacent portion of the chimney may be readily scraped out and there is no danger whatever of the soot descending into the stove, as has heretofore occurred with devices of the general character to which my invention relates. After the cleaning operation, the sleeve 9 is again rotated to the position Shown in Fig. l, and the cap 7 is then re-applied.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided an extremely Simple and inexpensive clean-out elbow which will permit the accumulation of soot to be readily removed whenever desired, so as to greatly lessen the lire hazard, and as the soot being removed cannot descend into the stove, the invention is greatly advantageous over similar devices heretofore provided. As excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, minor changes may of course be made.
I claim A T shaped clean out elbow for stove pipes comprising a horizontally elongated head having onel end adapted to be connected to a horizontal pipe or thimble, and having an opening in its lower side with a depending tubular extension for communication with a vertical pipe or smoke outlet from a stove, a removable closure forthe other end of said head, a horizontal, rotatable tubular sleeve in said head, said tubular sleeve being open at both ends and having an opening in one side normally ,registering with the opening in the lowerside of said head,- a.handle disposed entirely Within said tubular sleeve near its outer end said handle being in the form of a bail having its ends inserted through the Walls of said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
LUTHER C.v HGUSE.
