BLANK FOB TUIBFrCLOSING CLIPS.
Application filed May 16, 1923. Serial No. 639,258.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. KATE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit,.in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and improved Blank for Tube-Closing Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the V-shaped clips or clamps employed to close the filling ends of flexible tubular containers employed for vending tooth and shaving pastes, artists oil colors, and other viscous and pasty materials, and its object is to provide a strip or ribbon from which blanks for such clips may be sheared ready to be attached to the tubes.
This invention consists of a ribbon of flexible sheet metal having its edges indented at regular intervals directly opposite each other and also having one of'its surfaces embossed at the same regular intervals.
This invention further consists in the details of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a paste tube showing the manner a clip is applied to the filling end. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the clip on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a plan of a section of metal ribbon from which such clips may be sheared.
Tubes 1' for soft plastic, viscous and semifluid materials such as shaving, tooth and other pastes, o il colors, glues-and creams are usually of tin, aluminum or other pliable metals, and are provided with screw caps 2 at their discharge ends. The filling ends are flattened and then folded one or more times upon themselves and the-clips 3 are pinched 0 down upon these folded ends.
The present invention consists of a thin ribbon or strip 4 of steel, brass or other comparatively non-resilient metal or alloy formed with notches 5 alon its two edges which notches are so shape that whenthe ribbon is cut across between the. bottoms of these notches,.the small blanks thus formed have rounded corners. These blanks are then folded to produce the clips necessary to seal the tubes, one of them being shown in Figs 2, the rounded corners 6 being clearly shown, When this shearing and bending is performed by automatic machinery, the notches 5 are of advantage in insuring accurate feeding, shearing and bending.
In order to secure reliable bonding between the clips and the tubes, I prefer to emboss the ribbon in the manner indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the raised devices 6 and 7 may be pressed into the softer metal of the tube. I further prefer these raised devices in pairs and so form them that they will co-operate in bending the softer metal. The devices 6 are shown of such size that they, together with the metal covering them,
will ent r the space enclosed by the raised devices Any other desired system of embossing and any other formof notches in the edges of the strip maybe employed. The width of-the sheet and the distance between adjacent notches will depend upon the size.

2. A'ribbon of comparatively non-resilient metal to form blanks for sealing the filling,
ends of container tubes having its edges notched at regular intervals, the notches of the two edges being directly opposite each other, the ribbon being embossed so as to f produce raised devices on one of its sides.
3. A ribbon of comparatively non-resilient metal to form blanks for sealing the filling ends of container tubes having its edges notched at regular intervals, the notches of the two edges being directly opposite each other, theribbon being embossed so as to produce raised devices on one of its sides, said devices'b'eing in pairs between adjacent notches along each edge of the ribbon.
