SUPPORTING CLAMP FOR ELECTRIC CONDUCTORS.

To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND B. LUDWIG, a citizen of the- United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in. Supporting Clamps for Electric Conductors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in supporting clamps for electric conductors, of a type employing a hanger connection adapted for connection with bracing guys used in supporting electric cables and wires. It is an improvement on the supporting clamp disclosed in the patent to James R. Kearney, Number 801,250.
One of the objects of my invention is to I provide aclamp of the kind described, which is simple, cheap to make, strong, durable, which permits continuous right-angle turns of a cable held by it without splicing of the cable, which permits the strain of a connecting guy wire to be exerted more nearly in alinement with the supported cable or conductor than can be effected with the clamp of the aforesaid patent, and which will more securely and firmly clamp the hanger connection, and which eliminates parts which are required in the clamp of the said patent. The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing my improved clamps attached to cables mounted on a pole and to guy wires.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a. form of my invention in which the hanger connection is of U form, the bend of the connection being arranged for attachment to a strain insulator.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a form of my clamp in which the hanger connection embraces the conductor at one end of the Serial No. 597,844.
1, 2 and 3 designate respectively a top outside olamping plate, a middle clamping plate, and a bottom outside clamping plate. The three plates are, preferably, rectangular flat plates which, in the clamping positions are superposed and spaced apart from each other, and which may be of like dimensions.
4 designates an electric conductor which is adapted to be clamped between the plates 1 and 2 and which is adapted to be held in a concave longitudinal seat 5 provided in the under side of the plate 1.
6 designates a U shaped hanger connection, Fig. 2, the arms of which are held clamped between the plates 2 and 3.
Binding means which connect the plates 1, 2 and 3 and firmly hold them clamped to the conductor 4- and to the hanger connec tion 6, comprise, preferably, two pairs of bolts 7 disposed respectively at opposite sides of the conductor a and hanger connection 6. Each of said bolts extends through the plates 1, 2 and 3, and is provided with a nut 8 which bears against the under side of the plate 3. The seat 5, the top and bottom side of the plate 2, and the top side of the plate 3 may be provided with sharp projections 9 which are adapted to bite into the member against which they are clamped, thus preventing possible slippage of the conductor or hanger connection 6 between the plates which clamp them.
In Fig. 3 and Fig. l, the clamp.- has a hanger connection of U shape, the arms of which are clamped between the plates 2 and 3, and the bent portion of which embraces the top and sides of the conductor This hanger connection is disposed reversely to that which is shown in Fig. 2, and is designated in the drawings by 10.
In Fig. 1, 11 designates an ordinary pole carrying the usual cross arms. 12 which support conductors 4, the latter being shown bent at right angles. In the upper right hand corner of the figure are shown two of the clamps, corresponding to the clamp shown in Figs. 3 and 4. One end of the hanger 10 with which each of these two clamps is provided is fastened to a strain insulator 13, which is attachedt-o one end of a guy wire 14.

are shown two clamps corresponding to the form shown in Flg. 2. The bent portions of the hanger connections 6 with which these two clamps are provided are respectit) tively attachedto two strain insulators 13 which are respectively attached to two guy wires 14.
In both forms of my invention, the hanger connections 6 and 10 are spaced apart from the conductor adjacent thereto by only the thickness of the middle plate 2, whereby the strain exerted by the guy wire.- attached to the insulator connected to the hanger connection is close to alineient with the conductor which is braced thereby. This construction effects a minimmn of? tipping ot' tlIGClEIlDPS due to strain applied thereto, thereby reducing liability to bending and cutting of the conductors by the clamps.

A clamp of the kind described comprising three superposed spaced apart clamping plates, binding means connecting the three plates, and a hanger connection clamped between the middle plate and one of the outside plates, the middle plate and the other outside plate being adapted to clamp between them a conductor, the clamped portions of the conductor and hanger connection being disposed one over the other, substantially as set forth.

A clamp of the kind described comprising three superposed spaced apart clamping plates, bolts each extending through and connecting the three plates, and a tween the middle plate and oneo'tthe out side plates, the middle plate and the other outside plate'being adapted to clamp between them a conductor, the clamped portion of the hanger connection and conductor being disposed one over the other,-substantially as set forth.
6. A clamp of the kind described comprising three superposed spaced apart clamping plates, bolts each connecting the outside plates, and a hanger connection clamped between the middle plate and one of the outside plates, the middle plate and the other outside plate being adapted to clamp between them a conductor, said bolts being disposed respectively at opposite sides of the hanger connectionand the conductor, the clamped portions otthe hanger connection and conductor being disposed one over the other, substantially as set forth.
