H. W. SMITH DEVICE FOR USE IN PRACTICING GOLF PUTTING Filed April '7, 1922 Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
UNI-TED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE..-
vHARRY W. SMITH, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR F FORTY- NINE ONE HUNDREDTHS TO EDWARD L. TRAGESSER, 0F HUDSON,
r0 sun smrr'n.
OHIO, AND FIFTY-ONE ONE-HUNDREDTHS DEVICE FOR USE IN PRACTICING GOLF PUTTING.
Application filed April 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, HARRY W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use in Practicing Golf Putting, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in game devices and has particular relation to a device adapted to be used in practicing golf putting.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device of simple, durable construction which can be manufactured at a low cost and which can be used in any convenient place, but particularly indoors'to practice golf putting.
Another object is to provide a device comprising an inclined plane having a plurality of object holes, preferably nine holes, arranged therein so that an interesting and amusing game requiring great care and skill may be played thereon and which will interest the novice as well as the most skilled golf player.
A further object' is to rovide a device of the class'above indicated in which a main object hole and other holes are arranged so as to permit a golf ball, when accurately driven to be received by the main object hole and which will be received in one of the other holes in accordance with the accuracy of the stroke and to number said holes so that a score maybe kept and the skill of the player accurately determined.
The above objects are accomplished and additional ends are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it being understood that the invention is capable of various adaptations and that changes and modifications may be made or substitutions resorted to which come within, the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
. In the drawings in which similar numerals of reference are used to denote like or 1922. Serial No. 550,350.
similar parts as the same may occur in any i of the several views and in wihch Figure 1 isa plan view of a putting'device constructed in accordance with this invention. I
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken as indicated by the line 2-2 -of Figure 1 Figure 3 is a perspective view showingmy improved device.
- In the drawings. the numeral 6 denotes a body portion preferably formed of rigid sheet material, and supported in an inclined position by an upright member 7 which may be formed integral therewith or suitably secured thereto so as to project downwardly from the rear edge thereof. The body 6 is provided on the underside thereof at the forward edge thereof with the horizontal surface 8 which-intersects the upper face of the body The body 6 is preferably rectangular in shape and is provided with a plurality of holes 10, preferably nine holes arranged in two rows running in parallel relation tothe forward edge 4. Each hole 10 is circular and is of the same diameter as the regulation golf cup. The reference characters 10, 10". 1()'=,-10 and 10 designate the holes in the forward row and the characters 10, 10 10 and 10 denote the holes in the rearward row. The'holes in the forward. row are equally spaced apart and the holes in the rearward row are ositioned in alternate relation thereto wit a hole in the rearward row located directly back of each space be tween the holes in the forward row.
6 to form a knife-like forward edge 9.
The upright portion 7 is of a height sufficient to support the body in an lnclined position so that a ball positioned in any of the holes in the second rowand resting on the floor or other supporting surface will project above the upper face of the body 6 asshown by the dotted lines in Figure 2.
In order to provide means whereby interest and amusement will be added to putting contests, each hole is provided with a number which is stamped or otherwise secured on the upper face of the body 6 adjacent each hole. The hole 10 is numbered 1'; the holes 10" and 10 are numbered 2;
the holes 10 and 10 are numbered 3; the holes 10 and l0 are numbered 4: and the holes 10 and 10 are numbered 5.
In use, my improved device is placed on a flat surface and the player takes a position at a desired distance directly in front 'of the device. A regulation golf ball is used and I prefer to play'tlie game with nine halls. each ball in the main hole 10 and if each of the nine balls are driven into this hole the player is given a score of 9. However, should any of the balls be received in any of the other holes, the number adjacent each hole will he scored against the player and in case the player makes a stroke which fails to place a ball in any of the holes, six points will be added to the players score.
It will thus he seenthat I have provided a practical device which when used, will enable a player to acquire proficiency in golf puttingand will also afford entertainment and amusement.
Having thus illustrated my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a rectangular piece of sheet material having a knife-like forward edge adapted to rest on a supporting surface, means at the rear edge of said sheet material to support the same in an inclined position, said sheet materialpro- The object of the playing is to place vided with a plurality of holes formed therein substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, a rectangular piece of sheet material, means to support therear edge thereof in spaced relation to the supporting surface, the said sheet material provided at theforward edge thereof and on the underside thereof with a flat horizontally disposed surface which meets the upper surface of the sheet material to form a knife-like forward edge. said sheet material provided with a plurality of circular holes, the said holes arrangedvin two rows, extending in parallel relation to said forward edge with the holes in one row alternately arranged in respect to the holes in the other row. I I
3. In a device of the class described, a piece of flat sheet material, means to support the rear edge thereof in spaced relation to a supporting surface, the said sheet material provided at the forward ed e thereof with a horizontally disposed supporting surface adapted to rest on a supporting surface, said sheet material provided with a plurality of circular holes, each of said holes adapted to receive a golf ball and a number on said sheet material adjacent each of said holes.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY WV. bM'ITH.
