side of the casing, with the door normally held shut by the coiled spring 25 mounted on the rod. The outer end of the hinge rod has al crank 26, coupled by connecting rod Q7, with a foot treadle 28, which is pivotally mounted on the end of the casing. vWhen the operator depresses the foot treadle, the hinge rod 23 is rocked to open the door 7.
This door 7 is provided with a slot 29 in itslower edge which slot is covered by a flap hinged to the door. Below the door 7, and opposite the opening 6 is the door 8 which is secured to the pintle 31 pivoted in clips 32 on the casing and one end of this pintle has a crank to which is secured a coiled spring 33 with the other end secured to the case so that the door 8 is held shut by spring tension, a handle 34 being provided to open the door.
rlhe lower compartment containing the ash can 19 is also provided with a casing door 35 hinged at 36 and opened by handle 37.
The crank 17 for rotating the sieve is nore mally held in horizontal position, as shown in Figure l, by a pivoted latch 38 (Figures 10 and 11), which can be turned outwardly to engage and lock the crank or turned down so as to release the crank and permit its operation. As heretofore stated the weight 12 also tends to hold the crank in horizontal position with the openings 5 and 6 in register with the doors 7 and 8. Y
rlhe mode of operation will'be obvious from the foregoing description. The opera tor fills his shovel, illustrated at l10, with ashes and with his foot depresses the treadle QS, which opens the door 7 and allows the shovel to loe inserted through the opening 5 into the sieve receptacle. The operator then releases the foot treadle and the door closes allowing the shank of the shovel to enter the slot 29. Then the operator dumps the ashes by turning the shovel as shown in Figure 9. In this turning the shovel, there is no interference with the shaft 13 by reason of its downward bend, and this bend also enables ine to locate the door opening lower and in a more convenient position for the user. The ashes being dumped, the shovel is withdrawn, the door swinging outwardly to pass the shovel and then autoinatically closing. The operator than rocks or rotates the sieve shaking out all the fine Y ashes, which pass the perforations or mesh and are received in the ash can 19.
rlhe operator then opens the door 8 and. shovels out any large or half burnt coal forv rehurning. When the ash can 19 is filled by opening the dooi 35, the can may be readily removed by the handle 20.
Having thus described my invention, what Y closed outside casing with a sifting receptacle mounted therein adapted to be agitated and a container below the sifter to receive the sifted material, the sifting receptacle provided with openings in its end wall, one above the other, and the casing having doors to cover the openings, the upper door hinged at the top to open outwardly, with means for causing the receptacle openings to register with the door openings, when the machine is at rest.
2. ln a device of the character specified, a closed outside casing with a rotatable sifting receptacle mounted therein adapted to be agitated and a container below the sifter to receive the sifted material, the sifting receptacle provided with openings, one` above the other, and the casing having doors to cover-the openings, with means for causing the receptacle openings to register with the door openings, when the machine is at` rest.
3. 1n `a device of the character specified, a closed outer casing, a shaft journaled in the sides of the casing with a cylindrical sift ing receptacle mounted on the shaft, o enings in the Vend wall of the siftei., one a ove the Vother on either side of the shaft, with doors in the casing to register with said openings when the machine is at rest, the
upper door hinged at the top to open outwardly and slotted at its free edge to receive the handle of a shovel, when the door is closed with a flap hinged to the door to close the slotted opening. i
4. In a device of the character specified, a closed outer casing, a shaft journaled in the sides of the casing with a cylindrical sift` ing receptacle mounted on the shaft, openingsy in' the end wall of the sifter, one above the other on either side of the shaft, with doors in the casing to register with said openings when the machine is at rest, the upper door hinged at the top to open outwardly and slotted at its free edge to receive the handle of a shovel, when the door is closed with a Hap hinged to the door to close the slotted opening, with a flattened portion for the cylindrical receptacle in line with the lower opening for the reception of non-siftable material.
In a device ofthe character specified, a closed outside casing with a sifting receptacle mounted therein adapted to be agitated and a container below the sifter to receive the sifted material, the sifting receptacle provided with openings, one above the other, and the casing having doors to cover the openings, the upper door hinged at the top to Vopen outwardly and a foot treadle with connection therefor to the upper door, for opening saine for deposit of ashes in the sifting receptacle.
6. ln a device of the character specified, a
closed outer casing, a shaft journaled in the sides of the casing with a cylindrical sfting' receptacle mounted on the shaft, openings in the end Wall of the sifter, one above the other on either side of the shaft, with doors in the casing to register With said openings when the machine is at rest, the upper door hinged at the top to open outwardly and slotted at its free edge to receive the handle of a shovel, when the door closed with a flap hinged to the door to close the slotted opening, the shaft of the sifting receptacle being formed With a loop to perinit the turning of the shovel to dump the ashes.
