WHEEL-TRIMMING DEVICE.
Original application led December. 31, 1920.; Serial No. 434,194. Divided and this application led l `lune 8,A 1922-l Serial No. 568,906.-
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that we, MArrHnw S. CUM-Q NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, KingsfCounty, State l of New York, and FREDERICK W. GEIssnN- HAINER, a citizen of the United States of' America, and a resident of Freehold, countyy of Monmouth, and State of. New .Jersey-,l have invented certain new and useful Im'- provements in Wheel-Trimming Devices, oi"
which the followingis .a speciication.
This invention relates to trimmer-mechanisms'for grindingwheels and is a division of application Serial No.l 434,194 filed De- One of the essentials to the grinding of perfect threads on' hobs is that the cutting surfaces of the grinding wheel be in good condition always and at -an angle corresponding with the angle between the sides 'of the finished thread. It is essen. ial also,
when steep pitch hobs are cut as by turning the grinding wheel at an angle about a horizontal axis, that the sides of the cutting wheel be properly trimmed to theproper angle with due allowance for'the position of the wheel. y
This invention has for its\object therefore to provide simple, accurate and easily, p adJustab'le means for trlmnnng or dressing,
a grinding wheel in a manner whereby the aims above set forth will be attained.v
Further objects will appear from the vfollowing speciiication taken in connection with the drawings forming a part of this application and in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view'of the grinder wheel and a portion of the wheel dressing mechanism. V
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan'view partly` in sectional detail of the wheel dressing mechanism on the line 2--2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. A3 is a detail sect-ion of a portion of the actuating mechanism of the wheel dressing devicel on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.v
Fig. 4 is a front elevational' view onVT a' larger scale of the wheel dressing mechanism. y
Fig. 5 is a transverse elevational view of! grinding wheel.
Fig. 6 is a transverse elevation section,
corresponding-to the View of Fig. 5, but on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a detail elevational sectionaly i l view of a clamping screwon the line 7-7- of Fig. 5 .l 5 u Figs. A8, 9 endl() are details/pfI the longitudinal trimming` mechanism forl the l Referring tothe drawings, the trimmer mechanism is mounted in conjunction with the grinding' wheel, on the same base 6 and moves with the wheel in transverse, arcuate and longitudinal adjustments so that it will be operative in all positions for use in trimming the wheel. f
.The mounting for thegrinding wheel will first be described. i'
The wheel 50 is carriedby a shaft 50a and is rotated atthe desired speed bya belt drive applied to a pulley 81.
The journals 50",-50? of the shaft 50 are mounted asl by clamping fingers 82, 82,
pivotally positioned as by' thc studs 83, 83 and clamped'over the journals-fas by the bolts 84, 84, taking in threaded holes in the lower stationary clamping ngers 85, 85.
The in'gers of one of said pairs of clamp- I ing fingers,l (as for example the left hand pair inl Fig. l) may both be pivotally mounted as at 83 on the arcuate frame 90. The other of said pairof clamping lingers (as for example the right hand pair in Fig. 1) is slidably adjustable in and out transversely. between the guiding members.86, 86 (Figs. 5 and 7) and may be clamped 'in po-y sition by the nuts 87, 87. The purpose of this adjustment is toalign the axis of the grinding wheel with the axis offthe rotating piece to be cut.-..or at any desired angle thereto.
The frame- 90, carrying the journals-in which the shaft 50a revolves, is\mounted on arcuate guides 88 and may be adjusted about a horizontal transverse -axis passing through the center point of the cutting 91, being itself held from ylongitudinal movement by a stud 91l taking in a groove 911fin the shank of the screw. The'thread 91c of the screw meshes with a thread cut on thearcuate periphery of the frame 90. vA bolt 89 whoseheadrides in an arcuate slot inrthe frame 90 ma be clam'ed by reason of the nut 89a an frictional y hold the frame 90 in set -sition. I
Thepurpose of this adjustment is to incline the cuttingwheel 50 as desired for the' Vthe clamping screws 93, 93.
Pare moved alternately into operating position fb oscillation of the handle or lever 100. Eac trimming tool is preferably mounted in a. square bar'l96, which is toothed on one edge and in mesh with a corresponding feed gear 97 or.98. n
The gear 97 is lin mesh with agear 101 and the gear 98 is in mesh with a gear V102,each
. as of said gears 101 and 102,'having a'shaft on which is aixed another gear .as 101 and ,102 respectivelyl meshing with an internal gear or rack 99 which may A:be swung about a fixed center by the manipulation of the" handle 4100.
It is apparent that when the handle 100 is swung and the rack 99 turned, thev gears 97, and 98 will both rotate in the same direction but as .the bars 96, 96 are in contact on opposite sides of their actuating gears,
one wlll 'be fed forwardand the other drawn back. -For example, if the handle 100 is\ swung totheleft (Fig. 2) the trimmer'94 will be drawn back and the trimmer" 95 will be fed outward. lVth the handle 100 thrown to the right, the tool will be drawn Y back-and the tool 94 will be fed outward.
In this way the trimming of the wheel -50 is done alternately omone side and then on the 4other sidel f To provide-for variation of the angle between the trimmers, each tool is mounted on its own plate94 and 95'l respectively and is clamped to the common base 105 by bolts 94 and 95? respectively operating inarcuate 'slots inthe common base.
Each plate has .a micrometer adjusting screw 94, 95 respectively in mesh therewith, each screw being mounted in a swinging cylinder'91, 95,'respectively.
To vary the angle of trimmer 94,' for' ez'rample, with the center line of the grinding wheel 50, the clamping screw 94b may be loosened, a set screw 4103 loosened (Fi 3) 'whereby' a spring 104 in the shaft o the lgear 101 will raise the gear 101 out of'mesh with the rack 99 and raise 'the gear 101 into a recess 106. l
The adjusting screw. 94 may then be turned by means of the lmurled' head and the screw beingV fixed 4will actuate the cooperating arcuate plate 94 as desired. The
bolt 94h- Inay then be clamped, the set screw 103tighten'ed untilgears 101. and 101*l are in mesh with their cooperating parts.
It is apparent, therefore, that the wheel may be trimmed to the same angle on each The basev 107, carrying the' trimmers and' all adjustmentsthereof, is pivot-ally mounted as iby arms 108, 109, to a lug 110 on the journal bearing plate by means of a pin l 111 so that it may be bodily swung over backwards in a transverse arc 'and wholly removed from the vicinity ofthe grinding wheel.
A trimmer is also required for flattening ofi' the edge .of the grinding wheel'` when hobs are cut as hob teeth in general have a fiat edge in place of av sharp edge such as is frequently found in screw threads.` We have therefore devised -a'longitudinal wheel trimmer to be mounted in conjunction with the face trimmers already described and on the same base plate.
The mounting for the longitudinal trimmer- 117 (Fi 48, 9 and 10) comprises a bracket 112 a ed to the surface of the plate 90. as by the scrgws 112, 112.. A casing 113 is pivotally affixed to the bracket 112 ,as by the -casin 113 mayl be held in any .desired positionv ut a Istop pin-,115 is provi-dedl against jwhich' a' projecting pin 116 of the casing strikes and limits the downward motion of the casing to positiorr'the trimming tool 117.
'As in the case of the face trimmers, the
l trimmer 117 is mounted on a square bar 118 .longitudinally slidable in the casing 113 andA toothed on a 4portion of one edge as atl 119.
A gear 120 actuated by. a in u121 serves to.
feed'the. trimmer longitu lnally across the wheel face.
A transverse adjustment of the trimming tool 117 is 4provided at the endof the .bar`
'118'.4 A frame 122 has a track or guide 123` on Whichthe tool carrier 124 slides'by-'thel` action lof the screw 125 fixed inthe frame 122 andthreaded' into the tool carrier; 12st. Rotation-of the screw 125 thereforeffecds thetool in andout transversely.
fashion.
It is apparent'that' the longitudinal trimmer may -be swung into position when the other trimmers are swung backnand vice versa. i
The operation of the trimmingv mechanism has been described above part bypartV but it may be said that the position of the work to be groundfmay be made inthe usual .Although one specific embodiment'of the invention has been particularly illustrated i and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperatingr parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as expressed in the following claims.
