To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAURICE V. BRESNA- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Use in Attaching Heels to Shoes, of which the following description, in connectionwiththe accompanyin drawings, is a specification, like reference 0 aracters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.

This invention relates to apparatus for use in attaching heels to shoes and is in part a continuation of my application Serial No. 367,173, filed March 19, 1920.

According to the method described and claimed in my above-identified co-pending application, heels are temporarily attached to lasted shoes during the drying of the adhesive by means of suitable fasteners, each of which extends through its associated last and the heel seat of the shoe. into the central portion of a heel on the shoe to clamp it firmly against the shoe during the drying of the adhesive on the heel seat, without obstructing the exterior of the-shoe in such a manner as to prevent the performance of subsequent finishing operations.

Having this procedure in view, an obJect of the present invention is to provide improved apparatus for use in carrying out such a method of temporarily attaching heels. In achieving this and other objects, the invention provides novel apparatus which preferably, and as illustratively set forth herein, comprises a last having a hole or aperture extending through the rear portion thereof in a direction substantially in prolongation of the axis of a heel applied to a shoe on the last, and a fastener adapted to extend freely through the aperture in the last and into holding engagement with the heel and having a portion constructed and arranged yieldingly to engage the top of the last to enable the fastener firmly to secure together the last and the shoe and the heel. As illustrated, the last may have the usual thimble hole and the last may also be provided with a metal heel plate having a perforation arranged to register with the fastener-receiving aperture.

Referring to the drawings, the last 15, which may be of any suitable form, and which may be provided with a thimble hole 17 for the reception of a jack pin, is constructed with a hole or aperture 19 extending through the rear part of the last. As

shown in Fig. 4, the aperture 19 extends from top to bottom of the heel part of the last in a direction substantially coincident with the axis of a Louis heel applied to a shoe on the last. The aperture 19 is also so located as to avoid the metallic fittings of the last and toregister with a perforation 21 substantially in the center of a metal heel plate 23. This heel plate is rovided for the purpose of clinching the asting tacks about the heel end of the shoe, as well as clinching the heel-seat fastenings, and for other purposes.

When a last of the type shown in Fig. 1 is used according to the methoddisclosed in my above-identified application, a shoe S is lasted thereon in any suitable manner, and a heel H is clamped thereagainst, adhesive being supplied between the heel and shoe. As illustrated in Fig. 4, this clamping pressure is provided by supporting the heel by means of a tread plate 25 and a support 27 engaging the rear side of the heel and forcing the last and shoe against the heel by means of a clamp member 29 operated by links 31. While the last, shoe and heel are held clamped as described, a drill may be passed through the aperture 19 in the last to form a hole 33 in the heel for the reception of a screw fastener 35 which is inserted through the aperture in the last and driven into the heel by means of a suitable screw driving device after the withdrawal of the drill. The screw fastener is formed with a suitable head 37 and carries one or more metal washers 39' to provide a broad bearin surface, and one or more washers 4:1 0 leather or other compressible ltd llll

and elastic material to provide a firm but yielding clamping pressure.

The clamping mechanism may be removed after the insertion of the screw 35 and used on another shoe, the screw being left in place nntil the heel has set solidly in posilion. when it is ready for the permanently attaching operation.

.\s shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the last may he provided with a second perforation 43 in the heel plate 23 to serve as a tack hole to facilitate the placing of a sole upon the last. This tack hole 43 may be immediately in front of the hole 21, as shown in Fig. 2, or, as shown in Fig. 3, it may be immediately to the rear of the hole 21.

\Vhile particular forms of my invention ha ve been illustrated and described, it is not my intention. to limit its scope thereby or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. An apparatus for use in attaching heels to shoes comprising a last having an aperture extending through its rear portion from the top to the bottom thereof, and a fastener adapted to be passed freely throu l1 said apertureand to be driven into hol mg engagement with the heel of a shoe on the last, said fastener having a portion constructed and arranged to engage the top of the last and to apply ielding clamping pressure to the last and t e shoe-and the heel.
