UNITED STATES FRANK C. YAUSSI, OF BAKER, KANSAS.
JAR-CAI WRENCH.
Application filed July 3,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that FRANK C. YAUSSI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Baker, in the county of Brown and I State of Kansas, has invented new and useful Improvements in Jar-Cap Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide means adapted for the removal of the tops from fruit jars and similar receptacles and embodies a unitary structure provided with means by which the jar itself may be grasped, as well as the cap of the latter so that relative turning movement of the two may be easily had.
With this general purpose in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred en bodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein z- Figure 1 is a side view of the invention showing the same arranged in operative relation to a jar.
Figure 2 is an enlarged central vertical sectional view of the structure of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the structure of Figure 1.
Figure- 4. is a collective perspective View showing the standard connecting the jar engaging and cap engaging elements and also illustrating the overlapping plates of the cap engaging jaws, the latter being shown broken away.
The invention comprises the jar grasping element A and the cap clamping element B of which the former comprises the complemental jaws 1 connected by a hinge joint 2 and provided with the terminal handles 3 which, when the element A is in surrounding relation to the jar, provides for the firm clamping engagement of the same by pressure on the handles to force them towards each other. The inner surfaces of the jaws 1 are provided with corrugated anti-frictional elements of laminated construction consisting preferably of a layer of fibre 5 and a superposed layer of rubber 4 to provide against any tendency of the jar to slip when the element A is in clamping 1923. Serial N0. 649,287.
engagement therewith. The cap clamping element B is of similar construction to the element A, comprising the semi-circular complemental jars 6 hinged as at 7 and provided with handles 8 operating in the same way as the handles 3, the jaws being provided in their surfaces with the teeth 9 for biting engagement with the jar cap and being further connected by the diametrically disposed plates 10 formed with longitudinal slots 11, the. plates 10 overlapping so that the pintle 12 may engage the slots in the two and yet permit the relative longitudinal movement of the plates which is necessarv in the separation and bringing together of the handles 8. The pintle 12 is carried at the extremity of the horizontal arm 13 of an upright or standard 14 which, at the lower end, is secured intermediately to the outer surface of one of the jaws 1 of the element A, the standard or upright providing the means for permanently interconnecting the two elements so that the device is a unitary structure. The pintle 12, when the two clamps are attached respectively to the jar and to the cap, provides for turning movement of the element B with respect to the element A, the pintle constituting the axis of turning or pivotal movement and at the same time permitting the spreading or closing of the jaws 6 by virtue of its connection with the same through the slots 11 in the plates 10.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A device for the purpose indicated com prising connected engaging and cap engaging elements of which the latter is pro vided with relatively movable overlapping plates diametrically spanning the same, said plates being formed with longitudinal slots in their overlapping portions, the jar eugaging element being provided with a standard having a right-angularly disposed arm carrying a terminal pintle engaging in said slots.
In testimony whereof he afliXes his signature.
FRANK G. YAUSSI.
