M. MARTIN SHOPPING BAG OR PARCEL HOLDER Filed March 17, 1924 lzwewlon 1 ,1" 7 J/Z'orwey Patented Feb. 17 1925.
' rszmse M ATTIE MARTIN, 0F GILROY, CALIFORNIA.
SHOPPING BAG on PARCEL HOLDER.
Application filed March 17, 19%. Serial No. 699,953.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTIE MARTIN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gilroy, in the countv of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shopping Bags 0r Parcel Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates particularly 1 to a shopping bag or parcel holder, the principal object of which is to provide a parcel holder or shopping bag for a machine (automobile) and is to be attached to the robe rod usually found on the rear of the front seat of touring cars, sedans and other motor vehicles. and yet will not interfere with robes in any way.
It is one object of my invention to provide a parcel holder that may be readily mounted upon the robe rod of any type or make of car and which is neat in appearance and one which will not injure the car in any way.
.11: is another object of my invention to provide a device of the character indicated that will occupy but a small amount of space when full or empty and yet be capable of accommodating a large number of parcels.
It is still another object of my invention to provide a device of the' character indicated that is so constructed as to present a smooth exterior surface throughput the front, rear and bottom, these parts being made from a single, piece of materiah and that will be simple in construction. econo1n-- .ical to manufacture, strong, durable, and
highlyetticientin its practical application, and owing to its V shape will not interfere I with the comfort of occupants ofthe car.
'7 through the same.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view'of the device. n a I Figure 2 is avertical transverse section Figure 3 is an enlarged verticaltransverse s ection through the bottom of the holder.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I show at 1 a bar pivotally mounted at 2 to the back of an automobile seat 3 by means of arms 4. v a
At 5'-5 and 6--6 are shown steel arms, each pair being spaced by wood bars of equal length at their tops and bottoms as indicated at 77 and 8 -8. The parts 775'5 and parts 8'866 form two rectangular frames as shown. The bottom members 7 and 8 are rounded as shown and pivotally connected by hinges as 10.
This construe-- tion provides a framework over which are mounted front and rear portions of heavy czlirdboardfor similar material as shown at l 11. 1
Mounted on the inner surfaces of portions 1111 is a canvas strin 12, extending the full length of the holder and effectually preventing anything from dropping down between bottom bars 7 and 8 when the holder is opened. v
The ends of'the frame are closed by means of suitable Vshaped flexible material l-l, reinforced at its u the degree to wh openedbeing' determined by the length of the upper edges of these side pieces .14.
From the foregoing it may be readily seen that the holder is in the form of a large V- shaped pocket when open, and forms a thin flat container when closed, its. thickness J when closed being. determined by the combined thicknesses of the front andrear elements of the framework.
To the upper'rear cross bar- 8 are secured buckles and straps as at lti by means of which the device is fastened to bar 1, and at l'T'is shown a strap and buckle fastener for the device when closed. Pockets 18 are arranged within the holder by 'mounting a strip of canvas 19 on theinner rear surface.
This shopping bag or parcel holder is preferably made sufliciently laige for its lower edge to rest upon the floor of the car, but since the front and rear are hinged directly together at the bottom it tzkes up but little room, even when full, and interferes 'in no way at any time with the comfort of occupants of the car.
Iam aware that prior to my invention pper edge by a tape 15, ich the device may be other shopping bags or parcel holders have i been made. I therefore do not claim such broadly, but
I claim .A shopping bag or parcel holder comprising a pair of frames (f uniform size hinged together along their opposed bottom edges, a'covering for each of said frames, V-shaped flexible elements connecting the opposed side portions of said frames, a flexible strip arranged in said holder above the bottom elements of the frame to form abottom there-- for, and means arranged on one of said frames for securing the sameto the robe rod of a motor car.
