ELECTRIC-STORAGE-BATTERY CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that FREDERICK \VmGI-rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at 90 Park Avenue, in the city of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Storage-Battery Constructions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an electric battery construction, and more particularly to a novel cell formation in which a diaphragm is employed for separating two liquids in such a manner that by their gradual combi nation through said diaphragm the electric current is produced.
The object of the invention is to provide a cell constructed wherein a support is provided for the material forming the diaphragm.
Another object of the invention is to construct a device of this class that shall be cheap, durable, eflicient, and in which the several parts are quickly renewable.
lVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in novel construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this patent and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, but it is understood that I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made without departing from the sprit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the device comprises in combination with an outer cell 1, of metallic material of the proper metal or alloy depending on the chemicals employed and within which is placed an in-.
ner tubular cell 3 which is formed with a bottom 6 and having its sides corrugated or fluted for the purpose of providing the largest surface possible in a cell of small Serial No. 635,654.
diameter; said cell being made of hard rubber or other suitable material.
The sides of said cell 3 are provided with the holes or perforations 8 of any size or arrangement desired and through which the liquid can pass.
Surrounding this cell 3 is a tube 2 of similar material and construction, except it has no bottom and is larger in diameter so as to provide a space between said cell 3 and said tube 2; and the lower edge of said tube 2 rests upon the bottom of the outer cell 1.
This tube 2 is also provided with other holes or perforations 7 for the passage of liquid.
To prevent the free passage, mixing or combining of the two liquids contained in the cell 3 and the compartment formed by the cell 1 and the tube 2, a diaphragm 4- made of parchment or other suitable material is placed between the adjacent walls of the cell 3 and the tube 2 which act as a support for said diaphragm.
The lower edges of the diaphragm l and the tube 2 are sealed to the cell 1 by wax or other sealing compound to produce a tight joint.
No electrodes are shown in the drawings as this invention relates to a means for supporting a diaphragm of parchment or other suitable material to separate or form a wall between two different liquids, allowing their gradual combination by saturation or capillary attraction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, two tubes of rubber or other suitable material, one within the other, both of said tubes formed with corrugated and perforated sides, the inner tube provided with a bottom, a parchment diaphragm interposed between the sides of said tubes which support the same, for the purpose set forth and substantially as described.
