IMPROVEMENT iN PASSENGER REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 152,614, dated Jute 30, 1874; application iiled May 9, 1874.
To alt whom it Imay concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DECKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Passen ger-Begister; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a face view of my register open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of -the half-fare register det-ached. Fig. 3 is a face view of the register closed. Fig. 4- is a vertical central section of the same.

This invention relates to an apparatus for registering and announcing to the passengers the number of fares received by the conductor in railroad-cars, &c.,withoutthe use of punches or tickets, so as to save material and better enable the conductor to collect the fares.
The improvements are fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the case of my register, which is made in two parts, containing, respectively, the full-fare and halffare registering devices, the face-plates of which case are provided with holes or apertures, Fig. 3, beneath which the registering figures or characters are successively brought to view, as hereinafter explained. Af designates the portion of the case allotted for registerin g full fares, and A that for registering half-fares. Referring to the full-fare register, B is the adding-wheel, and C the multiplyingwheel, which are mounted on the opposite ends of a shaft or arbor, l), so that they are brought immediately beneath the face-plates above mentioned. Between the two wheels, on the said arbor D, is the bell or gong E. The said wheels B C are provided with teeth or ratchets I), opposite to each 0f which, on the faces of the wheels, is placed a figure or character, as shown. The adding-wheel B has successive figures, such as l, 2, 3, 4, &c., while the multiplying-wheel has multiples of the highest number of these gures-that is to say, if, 'as in the present example, the highest ligure of the adding-wheel is 25, that will con stitute the lowest figure of the multiplyingwheel, thence upward, 50, 75,100, &c. These figures are placed on the outer faces of the wheels, and show on opposite sides of the register-case, a being the aperture of the addingwheel, and af Fig. 4, that of the multiplyingwheel. The adding-wheel B is engaged by a pawl, c, which is attached to the stem of a but-- ton, F, arranged in the side of the case A, and which is held by a spring, d. Then this button F is depressed by the thumb or nger, the register-case being held in the hand by its handle Gr, the adding-wheel is turned by the pawl c to the extent of one of its teeth, or ot' one figure, so that a new or higher figure is registered or brought to view beneath the aperture a in the face plate. The addingwheel is prevented from turning in the wrong direction by a detent, c. Thus, if the conductor is requiredto depress the button F whenever he receives a fare, beginning with the lowest figure, the figure last registered or exposed to view will denote the number of fares he has taken. It he receives more fares than there are figures upon the adding-wheel, the same are registered by the multiplyingwheel, which is actuated in the following manner: Upon the under side of the adding-wheel B is a pin, c, located at any point along the rim of the said wheel, in the path of which is a catch,f, secured to a slide, H, which is arranged and held by a spring, g, in the side of the register-case. This slide ll carries a pawl, 71 which engages with the teeth or ratchets of the multiplying-wheel ein such a manner that when in rotating the adding-wheel the pin e strikes the catch f, it displaces it, together with the slide H, which, by the pawl, turns the multiplying-wheel to the extent of one of its teeth, or of one figure. The multiplying- Wheel is thus turned at every revolution of the adding-wheel, and beginning with the highest figure of the adding-wheel, (which is the lowest figure of the 1nultiplying-wheel,) it is multiplied as many times as the adding-wheel is rotated or revolved. In other words, when the figures of the adding-wheel are exhausted, the highest figure thereof is registered by the multiplying wheel, or a multiple thereof, and by adding the registered gures of the two wheels together, the result will show the number of fares the conductor has taken. The
act of depressing' the button F, so as to register a fare, is announced or signaled to the passenger by a sounding of the gong E, Whereby fraud is prevented on the part of the oonduetor. This is effected by attaching to the stem of the button F an arm, i, which is in line with a paWl, j, pivoted to the short arm I of the bell-crank lever I J. rlhe long arm J of this bell-crank lever carries the cla-pper K of the gong or bell, and it is pivoted in the register-ease at 7:. When the button F is depressed, as above mentioned, the arm i is thrust forward until it strikes the pawl j, whereby this, together with the bell-crank lever, is displaced, so as to cause the elapper to strike the bell. A spring, l, in contact With the long arm J ofthe bell-crank lever, has a tendency to throw it, with the elapper K, upon the bell, and by this means a sounding of the same is insured. The pawl j, which is engaged by the arin i in depressing the button, is pivoted at or near the end of the short arm I of the bell-crank lever, and it is provided with a stop, m, abutting against the edge thereof in such a manner that the pawl Awill yield to a backward movement of the arm yi, so as to allow the saine to pass over it, While it is held or prevented from giving way when such arm is moved forward in depressing the button.
As hereinbefore mentioned, to enable the conductor to register half-fares, I have conibined with the wheels B C a secondary or auxiliary adding and multiplying Wheel, L M, Fig. 2. These wheels are placed in the front portion of the register-ease. t designates the aperture of the auxiliary adding-Wheel, and yu that of the auxiliary multiplying-Wheel. The
said auxiliary Wheel L M is acted upon in like manner to the Wheels B C by a button, N, the shank O of which is slotted and guided upon a pin, a. This button carries a paul, p, which engages With the ratchets of the adding-Wheel L, and on the .face of this Wheel is a pin, q, engaging with a ratchet-wheel, I), which is mounted on the arbor ot the multiplyingwheel. The pin q serves to turn the ratchet- Wheel I), and with it the multiplying-wheel, to the extent of one figure once to every revolution of the adding-wheel, so as to multiply the number of fares in like manner described with reference to Wheels B and C. 'Ihe wheel L is held by a detent, r, and the Wheel I) by a detent, s, so as to prevent their turning automatically, or in the Wrong direction. Upon the shank of the button N is an arm, Y, which is bent in line with a secondary pawl, w, Fig. l, pivoted similarly to the paivl j upon the short arm 'i of the bell-crank lever. This pawl lw is braced or held by a spring, rr, ai'iixed upon the bell-crank lever.
Then the conductor Wishes to register a half-fare he depresses the button N, whereby the adding-Wheel I, Fig. 2, is turned to the extent ot' one gure, While at the same time the bell-crank lever is moved or oscillated through the bent arm r, so as to sound the bell.
That I claim as new7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the adding and multiplying Wheels B C with the slide II, having the catehf, pawl It, and reacting spring' g, all constructed to operate substantially as dcseribed.
