The lock comprises a suitable metal casing 10 set into the door, preferably cast in one piece, but open on the inner side Which is closed by a plate 11. At its outer end 12 it is provided with a rectangular opening 13 for the head 14 of a bolt 15, which bolt is slidable in and out to lock and unlock the door. The body portion 16 of the bolt is preferably substantially cylindrical, as shown in Figs. 4, and 7, and is provided along one side thereof with a row of spaced teeth or projections 17. Extending transversely of the casing is a pair of spaced,
permanently mounted plates 18 having openings 19 therein to guide the bolt, these openings being substantially circular and approximately the size ofl the bolt and are provided with notches 20'in one side thereof for passage of the teeth 17 when the bolt is reciprocated. Suitable means is provided for reciprocating the bolt when it is unlocked, such as a pinion 21, meshing with the teeth 17, and this pinion is operated by the usual knobs 22.
For the purpose of locking the bolt a plurality of discs 23 are provided which are mounted to rotate upon the body portion 16 ofthe bolt, and the rims of these discs project through openings either in the outer Wall of the casing or the plate 11, but preferably thro-ugh both so that they may be operated from either side of the door. Each disc is provided on O-ne side thereof with a centrally located circular recess 24:, preferably extending about halfway through the disc, and mounted in this recess is a locking plate 25. The opening 26 thro-ugh the disc is of sufiicient diameter toy alloW for reciprocation of the bolt in any position of the disc, but the opening 27 in the plate 25 is of substantially thev same dia-meter as that of the body port-ion of the bolt and is pro-vided on one side with a notch 28 for passage of the teeth 17. It Will thus be apparent that should any one of the discs be rotated so that its notch 28 is out of alignment with the teeth 17 the bolt cannot be reciprocated, and in order that the bolt may be reciproc-ated the notches in all of the discs must be in alignment With each other and with the teeth carriedVv by the bolt.
The plater is secured in the recess of the disc by means of a pairV of screws 29 Which pass through openings 3Q in the plates and are threaded into tapped holes 31 in the disc. In the `periphery of each disc are a series offnotv'clies 32 of` lany number desired'. In the present instance I have shown r16 and to facilitate operation of the disc these notchesare placed in outwardly projecting anges Adapted to seat in these recesses are springs 34, one for each disc. and these springs are secured to an inner Wall of the casing and coact With the notches: to yieldi'ngly retain the disc in different positions. The locking plates 25 may be adjusted about the axis of the disc to vary the combinations. In the construction shown there are eight openings in theseings in the disc 23 for the screws, to tliiis reduce the Work required ininanufacturing and also topi-event too great a weakening of the Wallis` of the disc, it is notA necessary j to drill eight holes 1n the disc, four holes" being all that is necessary. -I have shown six holes but sixteen different positions may be'securedY for the plate 18 corresponding to the sixteen differ-ent notches inthe per Ariphery of the disc by means of four holes. After the bolthas been shifted -it may be'V easilylocked by simply passingf 'the thumb orrffinger over the :discs rotating one or more of them.
