- My invention has for its object a substantial method of elevating mortar, brick, and other substances upon buildings in the course of construction, and for other purposes, and is accomplished by a machine constructed for the purpose, the moving power of the machine being located in the upper part of the building, and the articles to be elevated are pulled up instead of applying the power below and shoving them up, and the machine has a chain passing in the form of a belt over pulleys, with a novel arrangement forattaching the hods to the chains, and an arrangement for tightening the chain to keep it in position.

IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,593, dated June 30, 1874; application filed December 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER BRADFORD, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Hod-Elevators, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its object a substantial method of elevating mortar, brick, and other substances upon buildings in the course of construction, and for other purposes, and is accomplished by a machine constructed for the purpose, the moving power of the machine being located in the upper part of the building, and the articles to be elevated are pulled up instead of applying the power below and shoving them up, and the machine has a chain passing in the form of a belt over pulleys, with a novel arrangement forattaching the hods to the chains, and an arrangement for tightening the chain to keep it in position. Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional View of the lower wheel, over which the chain passes, and the arrangement for tightening the chain L; and Fig. 3, a view of the hod with a bar across its nose.
A is the upper elevator-frame; B, the lower elevator-frame; O, the keys which hold it together; D, the operating crank and shaft; E, a chain passing over a pulley, F, on the driviug'shaft and pulley G on the upper shaft H; I, a sprocket-wheel on shaft H 5 K, a sprocketwheel on shaft T in the lower elevator-frame; L, an operating-chain over wheels I and K; O, notched hooks on the chain L, on which the crossbar 011 the nose of hod P is hung, to be carried up with the movement of the chain. These hooks O hook both ways, so that the hod can be hooked on to carry it up, and also to bring it down. Q, the platform hung onto the chain to be carried up or down; It, the grooved ways in which the slides S S run, and in which slides is shaft T; U U, screws which, passing through the upper cross-timber of the lower frame, press down slides S S, and tighten the chain L.
The operation of this machine is as follows:

which is hung onto the chain L;"or brick or any other substance is loaded onto platform Q 5 then turn the crank D, and chains E will revolve shaft H, and the pulley I will bring up one side of. the chain L, and with it the hod or platform, and with them the load of bricks, mortar, or anything else, and if the chain is too loose it can be tightened with screws U U. I claim as my invention- The combination of crank-shaft D, upper shaft H, pulleys F and G, wheels I and K, chain E, elevating-chain L, hod I, with bar across its nose, and hooks 0, arranged substantially as specified.
