UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM J. PULLIAM, OF CHICO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO J. S. DEVOE AND W. V. ALLEN, OF SAME PLACE.
JPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,573, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed July 19, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PULLIAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chico, in the county of Butte and State of California, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Elevator-Lifters for Thrashing- Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an elevator or conveyer lifter or hoister for thrashing-machines; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the elevator or conveyer may be readily and easily hoisted to any desired point and held in such position.
A further object of the invention is the pro duction of an elevator or conveyer lifter or hoister which shall be simple in its construction, effective in its operation, cheap, and one that will be durable in use.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device or apparatus applied. Fig. 2is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the winding-drum enlarged.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A- represents a wagon, which is provided at each end with uprights or standards B, which converge and meet at their upper ends, at which point they are firmly secured together. Upon the rear standards, near their upper ends, are provided brackets a, which are each provided with a hole or opening, b. C represents abeam or track having a crosspiece at its rear end, said crosspiece being pivoted between the brackets a. Upon the outer or free end of the beam or track Gis provided a hook, while a similar hook is provided upon the rear standards, at their upper ends, said hooks being adapted to receive a guy rope or chain for the support of the free end of the track 0. Said track 0 is further braced and supported by uprights 1), connecting or supporting said track at its outer or free end.
Mounted on the track Ois a hanger, E, con- (No model.)
nected in the usual manner, by a rope, with a pulley-block, g, secured to abail, E, which is pivoted tothe side of the elevator or conveyor frame F. This bail E is braced near its upper end by a cross or tie rod, g.
The elevator or conveyer frame F is supported at one end contiguous to the receivingcylinder of a thrashing machine. (Not shown.) The other end of this elevator-frame rests upon the rear end of the platform of the wagon. An endless apron or belt, a is located in said conveyer frame, passing over rollers located at the ends of the frame. The roller is located at the upper end of the conveyer-frame-that is, at the end adj acent to the thrashing-machine, which is not shown; butit is obvious that it may be provided with any suitable or well-known arrangement of gearing (not shown) for imparting motion to said roller or shaft, and thus moving the endless apron or belt, which is, as shown, provided with transverse strips a, in order that the wheat may be readily conveyed from the wagon to the receiver of the thrashing-machine.
G represents a shaft which has bearing in the sides of the elevator-frame. This shaft is provided on one end with a drum, h, and with a pinion, t, which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl which is pivoted to the side of the elevator. The end of this shaft is also provided with a crank for turning the same. The end of the rope is secured to the drum of this shaft, so that as said shaft is turned the rope will be drawn through the blocks and the elevator raised, for a purpose which will be hereinafter fully explained.
The operation is as follows: Supposing the apparatus to be adjusted in place, as shown in Fig. 1, the wheat is placed upon the platform of the wagon, and is fedby an attendant upon the endless belt or apron, which carries it to the receiver of the thrashing-machine.
When theloperation of thrashing is finished, the elevator is slightly raised by operating the winding-drum and the supporting-hanger, and
the elevator is then moved toward the wagon,
and when it has reached the position shown in Fig. 2 the elevator is lowered upon the platform of the wagon by unwinding the drum.
The elevator may then be transported.
It will be seen that by the use of my improved lifter the elevator or conveyer may be readily raised to the height of the feed-chute of the thrashing-machine and placed in such position with relation thereto that the wheat will be readily fed to the same.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a conveyer-lifting apparatus, the'combination, with uprights or standards, of a hinged track, a hanger mounted on said track, an elevator-frame, andmeans connecting said hanger and elevator-frame, whereby the same may be raised and lowered, as set forth.
2. The combination, with uprights or standards, a hinged track-beam, and means for supporting the free end of the same,of a hanger mounted on said track, an elevator-frame, pulleys, and ropes passing through said pulleys and connecting the hanger and elevator-frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with uprights or standards, of a hinged track, a guy rope or chain connecting the outer end of said track with the standards,a hanger mounted on said track, an elevator frame, a bail secured to the elevator frame, and means for connecting said bail and hanger, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with uprights or standards having a hinged or pivoted track, and.
frame, a bail pivoted to the elevator-frame, a
pulley secured to said bail and hanger, a rope connecting said pulleys, a shaft mounted in the sides of the elevator-frame, a drum and ratchet-wheel on said shaft, and a pawl to en-- gage the same, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.

JOHN S. Dnvon,
WV. V. ALLEN.
