Description

H. w. LOVE & J. TALLEY, Jr.
Liquid Vents.
N 0. 152,5 65. Patented June so, 1874.
ATTORNEYS,
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn HIRAM WV. LOVE AND JAMES TALLEY, JR, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlQUlD-VENTS.
Specification forming part ofLetiers Patent No. 152,565, dated June 30, 1874; application filed June 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HIRAM WV. Love and JA MES TALLEY, J r., of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and ImprovedLiquid-Vent; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, .clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyin g drawing forming a part of' this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away, and Fig. 2 mainly a vertical section.
The invention relates to means by which air maybe readily introduced into a barrel, keg, or vessel of liquid in order to counterbalance the air-pressure at the outlet, and thus admit a free flow of the liquid from the vessel.
The invention wiIl first be fully described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and theupointed out in the claims.
the holes a and uncover the same the coiled retracting-spring D is inserted within tube 0, so as to rest at one end against the edge of tube A, and at the other against the middle of cross-tube O. V
The operation is as follows: The bit a being forced by rotation into the stave or head of keg or barrel, the valve I) is held by the spring above the hole a and thus prevents the access of outside air into the vessel. hen, however, the cook or spigot is opened to draw the beer, ale, or other liquid the thumb is pressed upon the end piece I)", which forces the valve 1) below the hole a, admits the free ingress of air, and produces an equipoise of atmospheric pressure upon the liquid. If the operator desires to draw for a longer time than it is convenient to hold down the plunger-rod with the thumb, then he turns same rod one halt revolution, so as to bring the opposite end flanges b of rod under the opposite side projections to of tube A, whereby the rod is locked with the valve below the hole or airvent a The advantage of this device is that it is simple, easily made. quickly applied, and may be successively used in any number of barrels, kegs, or other vessels.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of tube A, having bit a and side vent a the plunger B, having valve I), and the T-tube O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the opposite side projections a a", on the inside of tube A, with the opposite end flanges or plunger B, as and for the purpose specified.
