UNITED STATES WALTER RAY MCDOWELL, OF SAW'IELLE, CALIFORNIA.
ROTARY BRUSH.
Application filed December 22, 1922. Serial No. 608,493.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVALTER RAY Mo- DOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sawtelle, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to a portable power driven hand applied brush, and an object of the invention is to provide a hand applied power driven brush of simple and inexpensive construction and adapted to be readily applied to objects to be brushed and cleaned.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved brush.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view with the gear cover removed.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section transverse- 1y across the brush bodies.
The improved brush device consists of a shell or housing 2 which is of such size as to be conveniently gripped in the hand to enable the application of brushes 3 to an object or surface to bebrushed. The shell 2 has longitudinally recessed edges 2 to facilitate purchase by the thumb and fingers, and one side of the brush is provided with a slightly projecting portion 4 along and within which extends a shaft 5 to which is adapted to be readily connected a flexible driving shaft 6 deriving power from any suitable remote motor.
The shaft 5 is provided with a plurality of pinions 7 and these in turn mesh with and drive pinions 8 on transverse, pa *allel shafts 9 upon which the brushes 3 are mounted. The brushes are preferably of cylindrical character and are concurrently driven by the shaft 5 so that in use the brushes can be pressed against an object or surface to be cleaned while the shell is firmly held in the hand; the brushes projecting well below the lower edge of the shell which covers the upper portion of the brushes.
A feature of the invention is the provision of means for protecting the user from placing the fingers on the driving gear and, therefore, the lower open face of the chamber portion 4 is provided with a removable guard plate or strip 4 covering the power transmitting mechanism.
Further embodiments, modifications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
A rotary brush construction comprising a rectangular housing open at the bottom. said housing having longitudinally recessed edges to form a grip for a hand, said housing having a slightly projecting portion along one side, a drive shaft mounted in the projecting portion, a protecting plate covering the shaft, beveled gears upon the shaft within the housing, rotary brushes in the housing and having shafts carrying beveled gears in mesh with the gears upon the drive shaft, and means adapting the drive shaft to be connected to a flexible power shaft,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification,
WALTER RAY McDOWELL.
