D. J. HIGGINS GLASS HEATER Filed July 11, 1924 INVENTOR Z: z ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL JOSEPH HIGGINS, OF JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS.
To all whom it may 00% Be it known that I,
GLASS HEATER.
Application filed July 11, 1924. Serial No. 725,485.
061% DANIEL J. HIGGINS,
citizen of the United States, residing at Jamaica Plain, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glass Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a heater, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby glass rods can be heated while being held in suspended condition so that the rods can be bent into ring or other shapes.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sevthe same through tubes to suitable sources of or the like attached supply. Each part of the coupling is provided with a cock 4. Vertical pipes 5 have their lower ends supported by the top of the cylinder and these.
pipes are in communication with the interior of the cylinder. with a row of perforat the perforations being her side of the pipe so Each pipe is provided ions, as shown at 6, arranged on the inthat the flames re sulting fro-m the burning products of combustion escaping through the perforations will be directed inwardly into-the space formed by the pipes 5.
A plate 7 is supported by the tops of the pipes and this plate is provided with a central hole 8 through which a rod of glass to be treated passes into the space between the pipes. This rod is supported by the spring holder 9 which is formed on the horizontal arm 10 of the upright 11, this upright 11 being adjustably supported on the upright 12 by the bolts 13, the upright 12 being connected with the cylinder.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a rod suspended from the arm 10 and passed through the hole 8 in the plate 7 will have that part which is located in the space formed by the pipes 5 subjected to the impinging flames and thus will be softened so that it can be readily bent as desired. By making the holding means adjustable rods of different lengths can be treated.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a cylinder, vertically arranged burner tubes supported on the cylinder, means for holding an article to be treated between the burners and means for supply ing fuel to the cylinder.
2. A device of the class described cornprising a cylinder, vertically arranged burner tubes thereon. aplate connecting the upper ends of the tubes together, said plate having a hole in its center, an adjustable support carried by the cylinder and having a laterally extending part positioned over the plate, holding means on said part and means for supplying fuel to the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
DANIEL JOSEPH HIGGINS.
