UNITED STAT JOHAN VIKTOR"BLOMQUIST AND KARL FREDRIK WESSBLAD, OF STOCKHQLM,
SWEDEN.
SAFETY. GOVERNOR FOR STEAMZ GENERATORS WITH. ROTARY LAYERS OF.WATER.
Application filed May 19, 1924. Serial No, 714,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHAN VIK'IOR ,BLOM UIsT and KARL FREDRIK VVnssBLAn,
both citizens of Sweden, and residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Governors for Steam Generators with R0- tary Layers of Water, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to safety governors forv steam generatorswith rotary layersof water such as described in our copendingapplication, Serial Number 621,391,
filed Feb. 26, 1923.
Insteamv generators of-the type in which thegeneration of steamtakes place in rotary, tubular elementssor in fixed tubular elements with a rotary layer of water or; other liquidi-the safety of operation is dependent on the rotation of the layer of liquid so as to cause it toentirelycover the inner cylindri- Ical surfaces of the tubular elements. If, for any reason, such rotation ceases, the liquid will fall down and collect at the lower parts of thetubular elements. Consequently, the
upper parts ofthe tubularelements will be- ,come filled with steam, and thus the destruction of the tubular elements is threatened on account of the reduced transfer of heat.
The present invention .relatesto a device which reduces thedanger of explosion upon cessation of this rotation by automatically opening a valve communicating with the steam space of the generator, as for instance,
5 the safety valve of the generator, and 1nsome cases damping the fire, for instance by stopping a feedingdevice for the fuel supply and a forced draught blower.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings wherein;
Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a boiler plant;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, parts being shown in elevation, of the governor system. In the drawings, a centrifugal governor 1,
is driven by the same driving member 1, as the rotary layer of liquid in boiler element 1" by means of gearing or the like 2', and
the power transmitting means 2", and, consequently, is brought to a standstill, as soon as the rotation of the layer of liquid ceases for any reason. The centrifugal governor l actuates a slide valve 3 by connecting means 2, During the rotation of the centrifugal governor a cylinder 4, connected to casing 3 of valve. 3, is brought into communication with the atmosphere through pipe 5, and slide valve 3. When the governor 1 comes to a standstill, however, the cylinder, at is;
connected with. steam pressure through a pipe 6 leading to thesteam space of the generator. During rotation, of governor 1. the piston 7 is pressed against the bottom of the cylinder at by means of a spring 8, while; said piston, as soonas therotation ceases, is moved from said bottom by the applied steam pressure through pipe 6. This movement of the piston 7 upon cessation ofthe rotation of governor 1, is utilizedfor turn-7 ing a crank 9,11011 its pivot 10 forthe purpose of easing the safety valve 12 and opening the contacts 13 for an electric motor or motors 14, operating a fuel feeding mechanism 15 andblower 16. V
The devicefor the opening of the safety valve and the damping of the firemay of course be varied in difierent ways. The characteristic feature of the invention is that a centrifugalgovernor driven from the, same driving member as the rotary layer of liquid, isadapted to open a valve communicating with the steam space of the generator, as soon as the governor ceases to rotate and in some cases also to damp the vfire,as for. l instance by stopping the .fuel feed mechanism and the forced draught blower.
Having thus described our invention what .we claim and.,desire. toisecure. by, Letters Patent I is 1. A steam generator, comprising a,tubular element, means. for, centrifugally (positioning a layer of liquid in the'element, a rotary controlling member driven at a speed proportional to the speed of rotation of the layer of liquid, a valve communicating with the steam space of the generator, and means operatively connecting said control ling member with said valve and acting to hold said valve closed while the controlllng member rotates, and to hold said valve open while the controlling member does not rotate.
2. A steam generator, comprising, a tubular element, means for centrifugally positioning a layer of liquid in the element, a centrifugal governor driven at a speed proportional to the speed of rotation of the layer of liquid, a fuel feed mechanism, and means operatively connecting said centrifugal governor with said fuel feed mechanism, said connecting means operating to stop. said fuel feed mechanism upon the cessation of rotation of said centrifugal governor.
3. A steam generator, comprising, a tubular element, means for centrifugally positioning a layer of liquid in the element, a centrifugal governor driven at a speed proportional to the speed of rotation of the layer of liquid, a forced draught blower, and means operatively connecting said centrifugal governor with said forced draught blower, said connecting means operating to stop said forced draught blower upon cessation of rotation of said centrifugal governor.

5. A steam generator, comprising, a tubular element, means for centrifugally positioning a layer of liquid in the element, a
centrifugal governor driven at aspeed proportional to the speed of rotation of the layer of liquid, a valve communicating with the steam space of the steam generator, a forced draught blower, and means operatively connecting said centrifugal governor with both the valve and the forced draught blower, said means operating to open said valve and to stop said forced draught blower upon cessation of rotation of said centrifugal governor.
6.. A steam generator, comprising, a tubular element, means for centrifugally positiomng a layer of liquid in the element, a centrifugal governor driven at a speed proportional to the speed of rotation of the layer of liquid, a valve communicating with the steam space of the steam generator, a fuel feed mechanism, a forced draught blower, and means operatively connecting said centrifugal governor with the valve, the fuel feed mechanism, and the forced draught blower, said connecting means operating to open the valve, and to stop both the fuel feed mechanism and the forced draught blower, upon cessation of rotation of said centrifugal governor. i
7. A steam generator, comprising, a tubular element, means for centrifugally positioning a layer of liquid in the element, a centrifugal governor driven at a speed proportional to. they speed of rotation ,of the layer of liquid, a slide valve mechanically connected to the centrifugal governor, a

said slide valve operating to bring said cylinder into communication with the steam supply upon cessation of rotation of the centrifugal governor, whereby said controlling means is actuated, the valve con'-' nected to the controlling means is opened, and the fuel feed mechanism and the forced draught blower are both stopped.
In testimony whereof, we, have signed our namesto this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
