Be it known that I, HARRY BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Cheyenne, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Air-Pump Pressure-Regulating Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to air pump pres sure releasing devices and has for its object to provide means whereby when the pump is started, pressure within the cylinders will be prevented until the engine and pump assume normal speed, at which time compres sion will. take place within the pump cylinders. It has been found that air pumps that have automatic starting devices have to start against compression, causing them to throw {3gp belt from a pulley or seriously burn the A further object is to provide a pressure releasing device for a pump, said device comprising a centrifugal governor carried by the drive shaft and operating a release valve having a pipe connection with the pump cylinders and operating said valve in such a manner that when the pump is started compression is prevented within the cylinders and after normal speed has been obtained said valve is moved to closed position there- 3y allowing compression within the cyliners.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made Within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 2 is a sectional view through the release valve.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of air pump and 2 a drive pullev over which a belt asses for drivin the pulley from any suitab e engine. It as been found that where air pumps are started the compression within the cylinders during the starting operation often causes the belt 3 to be thrown off of the pulley 2, or the pulley to damage the belt by burning the same. To obviate this difiiculty the pump crank shaft 4 is provided with a governor 5 of the centrifugal form which acts against the coiled spring 6 and moves the collar 7 longitudinally on the crank shaft 4. The collar 7 is normally, when the engine is standing still or turning slowly as for instance during an initial starting of the engine, in the position shown in Figure 1, at which time the release valve 8 is open as shown in Figure 2 and is held open by the arm 9, which is moved outwardly by the collar 7 when the governor 5 compresses the spring 6, at which time the valve 8 is closed by the arm. The arm 9 is carried by a ring 10 in which the collar 7 is rotatably mounted. Pivotally connected at 9 to the upper end of the arm 9 is a link 9 which is connected to the valve lever 8 carried by the rectangular portion 11 of the valve stem 12. The valve 8 is carried by a pipe line 13 which connects to the cylinders 14 of the pump and is in communication with the interior thereof. It will be seen that when the engine is started the valve 8 is open as shown in Figure 2. However when the crank shaft 4 gains sufficient speed the governor 5 will move the'rollar 7 outwardly and the arm 9 will close the valve 8 thereby allowing compression within the cylinders and a pumping action to take place within the pump.
From the above it will be seen that an automatic relief valve is provided for air pumps whereby pressure within the cylinders of the pump is prevented during a starting operation of the pump and compression insured after the initial startin operation, thereby preventing throwing o of the belt or burning ofif of the belt by a drive pulley.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with the cylinders of an air pump, said cylinders having a pipe connection with a relief valve which is open when the pump is not running and when the pump is moving slowly, a governor controlled collar, said governor controlled collar being slidably mounted on the drive shaft of the pump, said relief valve being disposed adjacent said drive shaft, a lever connection between the governor controlled colltd lar and the relief valve, and forming means whereby when the drive shaftrotates suflieiently to actuate the governor said relief valve will be closed.
2. The combination with an air pump having a cylinder, a pipe connected to said cylinder, a relief valve carried by'said pipe, a drive shaft carried by said pump, of a overnor mounted on said drive shaft and 10 controlling said relief valve whereby when the drive shaft obtains a speed above a start ing Operation, saitl relief valve will be closed.
