ROBERT VIEGELMANN, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
POCKETKNIFE HGLDR.
Application filed. December T0 @ZZ 'whom t may conce/m:
Be it known that I, ROBERT VIEGELMANN, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pocketknife Holders, of which the following is a specification.v
rlhis invention relates to pocket-knife holders, and has for its main object to provide means whereby a pocket-knife may be comfortably and safely carried by the owner in his pocket, and protected therein from foreign matter and influences, and when desired for use may be readily removed from the holder and used in any place and .in any manner desired.
To accomplish the purpose in view, the invention resides in a holder adapted to be closed and having different styles of means by which it can be attached to a chain so as to be freely movable and easily detachable from the chain.
rlhe invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a plan view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section along line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figures 3 and 4 represent each flap or strip of the material which is used in making the holder;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of my invention;
Figure 6 is a vertical longitudinal section taken along line 6-6 of Figure 5; and
Figure 7 shows the strip of material from which the modified form illustrated in Figure 6, is made.
In the drawings like numerals denote like parts.
As illustrated in the drawings 1 denotes a blank of preferably flexible material which forms the back and flap of the holder. 2 is a shorter blank forming the front of the holder. The blanks are superimposed relative to each other and their sides and rounded ends are joined together in any suitable manner as by a row of stitching 3. About the center of the closed end of the holder a hole is provided in which an eyelet 4 is secured in a well-known manner, so that the hook 5 of a chain 6 may be inserted therein to attach the holder to the chain.
Figure 2 shows that a part of the end of the blank 2 is doubled over on its back and provided with the male part 7 of a press button., The part of blank 2, which is 12, 1922. seriai No. 606,419.
bent over on-itself is thev square end 8 shown in Figure Ll. The flap end of the blank l is provided with the female part l0 of a press button at such a place asto register with the button part 7, to allow the closing of the iiap by pressing the respective parts of the button upony each other.
In Figures 5, Gand 7 is shown a modified form of my invention, the blanks l and21 being made out of one strip, a narrow neck 11 joining them together. l
Before stitching the blank members 1 and 2 together, a semi-annular'link 12 or hook is slipped over the blanks and around the neck l1. The side edges 13 of the neck 11 are bent inwardly (Fig. 5) so as to prevent the hook 12 from shearing or cutting the leather, or other fibrous material, from which the holder is made. The doubling up of the square end 8 or 8 of the blank members 2 or 2 respectively, is also done from the standpoint of greater durability, as thereby a part of the press button is se.- cured to and within two layers of material thereby combining the strength and resistance of same, whereby it is seen that the part 7 of the press button will not so quickly cut the material with its edges.
My new pocket knife holder can be attached to any kind of chain which is usually carried byv a person in connection with his dress though I consider a watch chain as the preferable kind with which my new holder is to be used.
lt is understood that the parts of the press button can be substituted by any similar means, for instance a plain button and a button hole on and in the respective parts of the holder.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction, manner of use, and the several advantages of the present invention will be clearly and fully understood.
It will be seen that, instead of attaching a pocket-knife directly to a chain, which limits the use of the knife to the radius of the chain, andwhich leaves the knife when in the pocket unprotected against foreign matter which is free to enter the knife, and outside influences that mar and tarnish the outer surface of the knife, the holder herein shown and described furnishes complete protection` to the insidey and outside of the knife, which, when desired,- inay be readily removed from the holder', and used unrestrictedly in any place or position desired.
The holder itself in its preferred form is reinforced by strengthening means in the form of an eyelet at the fastening end of the holder that is subject to the greatest strain. The free end of the holder is also strengthened by doubling theend of the shorter blank over on to the back thereof, which although out of sight adds materially to the eliciency and durability of the holder, and enables the flap end to be quickly separated from the upper end of the front of the holder, and protect the end of the front even when the flap is carelessly detached therefrom. Though I disclose the embodiment of my invention by the two modifications described above, I reserve the right to change its construction and arrangement of parts Within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim: A holder for pocket knives and the like comprising a casing composed of strips of flexible material stitched at the side -edgegi and at one end thereof with the other end open to receive the knife, a covering about the open end, said casing being longer than the knife to be received therein, and a hollow reinforcement inserted through the flexible walls of the casing near the closed end thereof adapted to arrest the movement of the knife when sliding it into the vCasing and to prevent the knife from coming in Contact Vwith and the spreading the stitches at the closed end of the casing, said hollow reinforcement also adapted to receive a chain or the like.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereunder. v
